Chapter 70 Campus Chaos
Chapter 70 Campus Chaos
Emma Stone - POV
I climbed into daylight and wrong.
The maintenance shaft opened onto wooded hillside. Trees I didn't recognize. Ground sloping down toward buildings that looked like Blackwood but wrong distance. Wrong angle.
Everything was wrong.
I helped my grandmother through the grate opening. Her hands felt thin. Fragile. Like bird bones. Blake pulled her up the rest of the way. Ryan emerged next, sample case strapped to his back. Kai last, covered in rust and blood and looking broken.
Mitchell's soldiers spread out. Checking perimeter. Looking for threats.
Through the bond I felt Cole. Underground. Fighting. Alive but barely. The connection felt like a wire pulled too tight. About to snap.
I'd left him behind.
The thought made me want to vomit.
"We need transport." Mitchell's voice cut through. "Get these people somewhere safe before..."
An explosion somewhere below cut him off. Not close. Campus direction. Orange fire blooming between buildings.
"What was that?" My grandmother gripped my arm hard enough to hurt.
Another explosion. Then another. Different locations. All across campus spread out below us.
"The awakening." Ryan's voice stayed clinical but his face had gone white. "Enhanced individuals manifesting without control."
We started moving downhill. Fast as exhausted prisoners could stumble. Through trees. Over roots and rocks. Heading toward campus because we had nowhere else to go.
More explosions. Screaming carried on wind. Sirens wailing like dying animals. Emergency response activating too late.
We broke through tree line near athletic fields. Stopped.
Campus was eating itself.
Students running everywhere. Some screaming. Some laughing in high pitched hysteria. Some just standing frozen, staring at their hands like they belonged to someone else.
A girl floated fifteen feet up. Levitating. Terrified. Couldn't figure out how to come down. Her friends jumped trying to reach her. Their fingers missing by inches.
Two students fought near the library. One throwing punches impossibly fast. Blur fast. The other blocking with shields that sparked purple when struck.
Windows in administration building shattered. All at once. No explosion. Just glass bursting outward like something inside had pushed too hard against reality.
"I did this." My voice came out broken. Small. "This is my fault."
"You triggered their abilities." Blake corrected. Moving us forward. Always moving forward. "They're doing this to themselves."
We crossed athletic fields. Prisoners stumbling. Some crying. All of them overwhelmed. Mitchell's soldiers trying to keep everyone together.
Students noticed us. Started pointing. Moving closer.
"That's Emma Stone." Someone shouted. Boy's voice. Young.
More students turned. More started approaching. Not threatening. Just drawn. Pulled like gravity was different around me.
"Keep moving." Mitchell's voice went hard. "Don't stop."
But students kept coming. More and more. All ages. All looking at me like I was something they needed but couldn't name.
"I can feel her." A boy said. His eyes glowed faint blue. Wrong blue. "She's like a fire in my head. Burning."
"Make it stop." A girl grabbed my arm. Her touch sent electricity through me. Real electricity. She jerked back. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean it! I can't turn it off!"
Enhanced. All of them. Newly awakened. All drawn to me because I was the bridge. The catalyst. The thing that broke them.
We pushed through toward Legacy Hall. Where the heirs lived. Where maybe there'd be safety. Maybe.
Campus security appeared. Four officers. Looking lost. Overwhelmed.
"Everyone evacuate!" One officer shouted. "Emergency situation! Clear the area!"
"We're trying!" Blake shouted back. "These people need medical! They need help!"
The officer looked at the prisoners. At their condition. At us. His face changed. Recognition. "You're the heirs. What the hell is happening?"
"Enhanced awakening." Ryan's clinical voice kicked in. Diagnostic mode. "Genetic activation triggered globally. Blackwood has high concentration of enhanced bloodlines. They're all manifesting at once."
"That's impossible." The officer looked around at the proof. At reality proving him wrong. "That's..."
The ground shook hard. Earthquake hard.
A student near the fountain had both hands pressed flat to pavement. Eyes closed. Concentrating. Everything shaking from him outward in waves.
"Geokinesis." Ryan said it like a diagnosis. Cold. Clinical. "Manipulating seismic activity. He doesn't know how to stop."
"Can you stop him?" The officer's voice went desperate.
"No." Ryan's voice went flat. Empty. "Only Emma can. Her amplification triggered them. Theoretically her power could calm them."
Everyone looked at me.
"I don't know how." My voice shook worse than the ground. "I can barely control myself. Can't help them."
The shaking got worse. Cracks spread like lightning through pavement. A building started shedding bricks. They fell in slow motion. Then fast. Crashing.
"Try anyway." Blake's voice. "Emma, please try."
I reached through the bond. Toward the student causing earthquakes. Felt his panic. His power drowning him. Suffocating him.
I pushed calming energy. Like smoothing wrinkled fabric. Trying to soothe.
His eyes snapped open. Found mine. The shaking stopped.
"Thank you." He breathed it. Collapsed to his knees crying.
But fifty other enhanced students felt what I'd done. All turned toward me at once. All reaching through connections I didn't know existed.
Help me. Can't control. Make it stop. Please. So loud. Too loud. Make it stop please help me help me help.
Their thoughts slammed into my skull. All at once. Fifty voices. A hundred. More appearing every second as the awakening spread.
My knees gave out. Hands over my ears. Didn't help. The screaming was inside.
"Emma!" Blake caught me. "What's happening?"
"Too many." Could barely form words. "All of them. In my head. Asking. Begging."
"Block them out." Ryan crouched beside me. "Push them away."
"Don't know how!"
More voices joined. The pull spreading. Enhanced students across campus feeling the beacon. Moving toward it. Toward me. Hundreds of connections forming. Threads linking. Binding. Choking.
"Get her inside." Mitchell's voice from somewhere. "Before they all converge."
We moved again. Blake and Ryan half carrying me. Prisoners following. Soldiers maintaining perimeter against growing crowd of enhanced students pressing closer.
Legacy Hall appeared ahead. Safe. Maybe safe.
Then Dean Sarah Mills stepped out the entrance.
Federal agents flanked her. Body armor. Weapons. Official badges that meant authority. Power. Control.
"Emma Stone." Mills's voice carried over everything. "By federal emergency order, you surrender to protective custody. Now."
"Protective custody." Blake's voice went hard. Cold. "You mean prison."
"I mean containment of a national security threat." Mills gestured at chaos around us. "She triggered this. She's responsible. For casualties. Damage. Exposure of classified enhanced individuals."
"She didn't ask for this." My grandmother moved forward. Weak but determined. "Your families forced this. Created this through experiments."
"Evelyn Stone." Mills looked at my grandmother with recognition. Cold recognition. "Still causing problems. Some things never change."
"You knew." My grandmother's voice shook. "About Project Ascension. The experiments. You approved them."
"I approved necessary research." Mills's voice stayed level. Calm. Too calm. "Research that should have prevented this. But your granddaughter accelerated everything. Triggered awakening decades early. She's too dangerous to remain free."
Federal agents moved forward. Weapons not quite aimed. But ready.
Enhanced students around us pressed closer. Protective. I was their beacon. Their connection. They wouldn't let her take me.
"Stand down." One agent ordered. "All enhanced individuals step back."
"She's connected to us." The earthquake boy spoke up. "We feel her. You take her, you rip part of us away."
More enhanced students appeared. Surrounding us. Surrounding the agents. Creating standoff.
Through the bond I felt Cole still fighting. Still breathing. Determination burning through distance.
I felt Ryan and Blake beside me. Kai somewhere behind. The bond holding us together even damaged.
I felt the enhanced students. Hundreds of connections. Thousands. Threads linking me to every awakened individual in range. All looking to me. Needing me.
Too much. Everything too much.
"Last warning." Mills's voice went hard. "Surrender or we take you by force."
"Try." Blake stepped in front of me. "See what happens."
Federal agents raised weapons. Aimed. Ready.
Enhanced students tensed. Powers activating. Preparing to defend.
Everything balanced on razor edge.
Then someone fired. Not the agents. One of the students. Accidentally. Energy burst going wild. Hit agent's shield. Ricocheted.
Everything exploded at once.
Students attacking. Agents defending. Powers manifesting everywhere. Fire. Ice. Telekinesis. Lightning. Everything.
I felt it building. Too much power. Too much energy. All flowing through me. Through connections. Through the bond screaming in my head.
"Emma, control this!" Ryan's voice. Desperate. "Before someone dies!"
I couldn't. Couldn't stop. Could only feel it building. Growing. Consuming everything including me.
My abilities activated without permission. Defensive response. Trying to protect. Trying to calm everyone down.
But instead of calming, my power amplified. Hit every enhanced student in range. Boosted their abilities exponentially all at once.
The earthquake student cracked pavement open. The levitating girl shot a hundred feet up. The telekinetic threw a car without meaning to. It flipped. Crashed. Burned.
Everything spiraling out of control.
My power kept flowing. Kept amplifying. Couldn't stop. Couldn't hold back. Couldn't breathe.
The surge built higher. Stronger. Beyond anything I'd felt before.
"Emma stop!" Blake shouted. "You're burning out!"
I couldn't stop. The power had momentum now. Feeding on connections. On bond. On everything.
The surge peaked.
Then exploded outward in a wave.
Psychic shockwave. Pure amplified energy. Radiating from me in all directions.
It hit enhanced students first. Knocked them unconscious instantly. They just dropped. Dozens. Hundreds.
Hit federal agents. They fell too. Weapons clattering on stone.
Hit Dean Mills. She collapsed on steps.
The wave kept spreading. Across campus. Through buildings. Touching every enhanced individual connected to me.
Half mile radius. Maybe more. Everyone touched by awakening.
All of them fell unconscious at once.
Thousands of people. Just dropped.
Campus went silent.
I stood in the center surrounded by bodies. Breathing hard. Shaking.
Blake was still standing. Ryan too. Kai. All the heirs conscious.
The bond protected us. Connected us too deeply to sever.
Everyone else was down.
I looked at the destruction. At the bodies everywhere.
"What did I do?" My voice cracked completely. "What did I just do?"
Nobody answered.
