Chapter 64 Evolutionary Bridge

Chapter 64 Evolutionary Bridge
Emma Stone - POV
Forty guns and my grandmother stepped forward like she was walking into a lecture hall instead of an execution.
"Wait." Her voice cut clear through the chamber. Not the broken prisoner voice. Something older. Stronger.
Dr. Vance raised one hand. The soldiers didn't lower their weapons but nobody fired. "Ms. Stone. The elder. I wondered if containment had killed you."
"Takes more than that." My grandmother moved beside me. Found my hand. Squeezed hard enough to hurt. "And I know what you want from her. What you've always wanted."
"Don't." I tried pulling her back. "Don't give them anything."
"They already have it, child." She looked at me and her eyes held something terrible. Knowledge she'd been carrying alone. "They've known since before you were born. Since before your mother was born."
My chest went tight. Hard to breathe suddenly.
Dr. Vance smiled. Actually smiled. "Please. Explain to your granddaughter what she is. Save us all time."
"You're not just an amplifier, Emma." My grandmother's hand trembled against mine. "That's the lie they tell conduits. Make it sound simple. Manageable. But you're something else entirely."
"What else?" My voice came out small.
Through the bond I felt Blake shift closer. Cole's protective instinct flaring hot. Ready to fight even though fighting meant dying.
"A bridge." Evelyn turned to face the soldiers. The Vances. Everyone watching. "Between what humans are now and what we could become."
The words made no sense. "I don't..."
"Conduits trigger dormant abilities." She spoke like she was teaching again. Patient despite guns aimed at her head. "In people whose bloodlines carry the potential. Wake up powers that have been sleeping for generations."
Dr. Vance started clapping. Slow. Mocking. "Beautifully put."
"Shut your mouth." The words burst out before I could stop them.
He gestured like he was granting permission. "By all means. Continue the lesson."
My grandmother ignored him completely. "The founding families discovered it three centuries ago. Found people like us. People whose genetics contained instructions for something more. Abilities that look supernatural but are just biology we don't understand yet. Dormant in most bloodlines. Active in a few."
"The enhanced families," Blake said. His voice tight with understanding I didn't have yet.
"Yes. Cross. Rivers. Mason. West. Stone." Evelyn counted them on her fingers. "All carrying dormant code passed down through centuries. Most people never activate it. Live normal lives. Die never knowing what they could have been."
"But conduits activate them." Cole finished the thought.
"Strong conduits can." My grandmother's eyes found mine. Held. "And you're the strongest born in two hundred years. Maybe the strongest ever."
The chamber walls felt closer. Pressing in. "What does that mean?"
"When you bonded with the four heirs, amplified their abilities, you didn't just make them stronger." Her voice went soft. Apologetic. "You sent out a pulse. A signal that rippled through every enhanced bloodline connected to Blackwood. Through every descendant of the founding families. Hundreds of people. Maybe thousands."
No. The denial caught in my throat.
"You woke them up." My grandmother steadied me when my knees went weak. "Activated their dormant abilities. People living normal lives suddenly seeing the future. Moving objects with thought. Feeling everyone's emotions like knives. All at once. Because you exist. Because you bonded with the heirs."
"That's not possible." But I felt it. Through the bond. Through my burned out abilities. Threads spreading like cracks in glass. Touching strangers in places I'd never been.
"The founding families engineered this." Dr. Vance's voice cut in. Clinical. Explaining science. "Guided evolution. Controlled awakening of human potential. But they needed the right catalyst. The right conduit to trigger mass activation."
"They tried before." Bitterness soaked my grandmother's words. "Used other conduits. Other young women with ability. Most died trying. The survivors like me, we only managed small activations. Local effects."
"Until you." Dr. Vance stepped closer. Soldiers moved with him. "Emma Stone. Three centuries of conduit genetics concentrated in one person. Whose power dwarfs every predecessor. Whose existence rewrites the rules."
I shook my head. Kept shaking it. "I didn't want this."
"Evolution doesn't care what you want." His voice held no sympathy. "It happens regardless. And you're the catalyst for humanity's next stage."
"They won't kill you." My grandmother's hand tightened on mine again. "Can't kill you. You're too valuable. Your DNA could trigger activations for decades. But you alive, bonding with enhanced individuals? You could awaken thousands."
"An army." Blake's tactical mind seeing ahead. "Enhanced humans loyal to whoever controls the conduit."
"Exactly." Dr. Vance's smile widened. "Soldiers with precognition. Tacticians who read minds. Enforcers who feel no pain. All awakened through exposure to Emma Stone. All grateful to Project Ascension."
"You're sick." My voice shook hard. "You want to weaponize evolution."
"I want to guide it." Passion bled through his clinical tone. True believer explaining faith. "For centuries enhanced bloodlines activated randomly. Chaotically. Wasting potential. Project Ascension brings order. Structure. We identify bloodlines. Isolate markers. Use conduits to trigger controlled activation in selected individuals."
"You force abilities on people who never wanted them." Cole's voice went dangerous low.
"We elevate humanity." Dr. Vance spread his hands like he was blessing us. "Imagine enhanced abilities becoming common. Precognition preventing disasters. Empathy ending war. Human potential fully realized."
"Under your control." I could barely get words out. "With you choosing who gets power."
"Someone must choose." No apology in his voice. "Random activation causes chaos. Unstable individuals gaining powers they can't handle. We've documented it. People driven mad by sudden precognition. Empaths overwhelmed to suicide. Telekinetics who killed their families accidentally."
"So you lock people in cells instead." My hands clenched until nails bit palms. "Extract DNA. Torture them. Call it science."
"Sacrifice the few to save the many." His voice went cold. Hard. "Standard ethics. You'd understand if sentiment didn't blind you."
Through the bond I felt Ryan and Kai. Getting closer but not close enough. Moving toward us through tunnels that seemed endless.
"The pulse you sent during your binding." My grandmother's voice dropped quiet. "It's still spreading. Every enhanced bloodline connected to the founding families feels it. Responds to it."
"Responds how?" I asked even though part of me already knew.
"They're waking up." Wonder and horror mixed in her voice. "Right now. All over the world. People whose ancestors attended Blackwood. Whose families trace back to the founding bloodlines. Experiencing activation. This moment."
I felt it then. Really felt it. Threads spreading like infection across continents. Touching strangers in cities I'd never heard of. Countries I'd never see.
Each thread hummed with new power struggling to be born.
"How many?" My throat felt too tight.
"Thousands already." My grandmother went pale. "More every minute. Your bond with the heirs created feedback. Chain reaction. Every activation strengthens the signal. Makes it reach further."
"They're connected to you now." Dr. Vance sounded almost pleased. "Every awakened individual feels you. Knows you exist. And they're coming."
"Coming where?" Blake asked what I couldn't.
"Here. To you." Dr. Vance gestured at the chamber. At us. At everything. "Emma Stone is a beacon burning in their minds. Every enhanced person on Earth can feel her. Their instincts scream at them to find her. Be near her. Bond with her like the heirs did."
"That can't..." But I felt them. Hundreds of presences turning toward me like flowers following sun. Distant but closing. Moving with purpose they didn't understand.
"Not impossible." My grandmother's voice shook. "Inevitable. You're the bridge. The nexus point. Every enhanced ability flows through you. Of course they'd be drawn. You're the center of something humanity's never experienced."
"Mass awakening." Dr. Vance spoke with reverence. "Global activation. The founding families dreamed of this for three centuries. And you accomplished it accidentally. Just by existing. By bonding."
The threads multiplied while I watched helplessly. Felt them like pressure building in my skull. Hundreds becoming thousands. Thousands spreading toward tens of thousands.
All waking up.
All turning my direction.
"What happens when they arrive?" I asked even though I already saw it. My broken precognition showing futures that made me want to scream.
Dr. Vance's smile turned patient. "Depends on your cooperation. Controlled awakening under our guidance? They gain abilities safely. Learn control. Become productive enhanced citizens."
"And if I refuse?"
"They arrive confused. Terrified. Unstable. Thousands of enhanced individuals converging here with no training. No control. No understanding." His voice went hard as concrete. "Chaos. Death. Destruction you can't imagine."
Through the bond I felt Cole's rage. Blake's calculating fear. My own terror at what I'd unleashed.
I'd triggered something that couldn't be stopped.
"How long?" Blake asked. Always tactical. Always planning.
Dr. Vance checked his watch. "First wave arrives in six hours. Second wave twelve hours after. Then they keep coming. Forever. As long as you exist."
"We could break the connection," my grandmother said. "Sever it somehow."
"Can't be severed." Dr. Vance almost sounded sympathetic. "The bond is genetic. Fundamental. Emma Stone is the evolutionary bridge. Nothing changes that fact."
I looked at the soldiers. At the terrified prisoners. At Blake and Cole ready to die for me. At my grandmother who'd tried warning people decades ago and spent her life paying for it.
Thousands of enhanced people coming. Drawn by something I couldn't control. Walking into whatever trap Dr. Vance had built.
"What do you want?" The words tasted like surrender. "From me."
"Cooperation." He stepped closer. "Partnership. Help us guide the awakening. Control the chaos. Create order from evolutionary upheaval."
"And if I refuse?"
"We take you by force. Lock you in containment. Extract your DNA. Use it to activate bloodlines with or without consent." No mercy in his voice. "Project Ascension continues either way. The only question is whether you participate willingly or become another test subject."
Through my abilities I felt them coming closer. Enhanced individuals across the planet. Some driving. Some flying. Some just walking, following instinct they didn't comprehend.
All coming here.
All walking into whatever he'd planned.
I looked at Blake. At Cole. At my grandmother. Saw they'd fight. Die fighting.
But fighting solved nothing with thousands coming. With evolution using me as a catalyst for something I never wanted.
"I need time." My voice came out broken. "To think."
"You have five minutes." Dr. Vance checked his watch like he was timing a cooking recipe. "Then I need your answer."
He walked away. Soldiers stayed. Guns stayed trained.
I felt the awakened enhanced getting closer with every heartbeat. Felt their confusion bleeding into terror. Their desperate animal need to reach me.
Five minutes to decide.
Five minutes before I became either their salvation or the architect of their destruction
