Chapter 58 The Sacrifice

Chapter 58 The Sacrifice
Blake Rivers - POV
Cole dropped. No catching himself. Just weight hitting floor.
My hands moved without thinking. Caught him before his skull cracked concrete. His skin felt wrong. Cold. Too cold. Lips already going the wrong color.
"Ryan!" Sharp voice. My voice. Control practiced over years keeping panic buried deep.
Ryan scrambled over on his knees. Pressed fingers to Cole's throat. His face drained white. "No pulse. Cardiac arrest."
The bond screamed in my chest. Not just Cole gone silent. Emma's power still flooding out wild. Uncontrolled. She was draining life force and didn't even know it. Couldn't stop it.
Kai grabbed at equipment scattered on the floor. Looking for a defibrillator maybe. Something to shock Cole's heart back.
But I saw it clearer. Medical intervention wouldn't work here. This wasn't normal cardiac failure. Emma's power had stopped his heart through the bond itself. Only she could restart it.
And she couldn't. Too far gone. Lost somewhere inside her own chaos.
I looked at her still strapped to that table. Eyes open but empty. Not seeing anything. Power crackling visible around her now. Blue white lightning dancing across her skin. Beautiful and lethal.
Someone had to reach her. Pull her consciousness back. Make her aware enough to control this.
Ryan started chest compressions on Cole. Mechanical rhythm. Precise counting. Useless but he had to try something with his hands.
I stood up. Moved toward Emma.
"Blake, don't." Kai's hand grabbed my arm. "You saw what happened. She'll kill you too."
"She needs to wake up," I said. Pulled free. "Someone has to get through psychologically."
Reading people was my entire skill set. Understanding how minds worked under stress. Finding exact words to shift behavior. I'd spent my whole life learning manipulation like other people learned piano.
Time to see if any of it mattered when the target was someone I actually cared about.
I walked toward the table. Slow steps. Each one fighting pressure from Emma's power pushing outward. Like walking into wind that wanted me gone.
Three feet away the pressure doubled hard. My ears popped. Tasted metal on my tongue.
Two feet. Nose started bleeding. Felt warmth running over my lip and chin.
One foot. Everything hurt. Bones aching deep. Skull feeling thin like eggshell.
I looked at her face. So much pain written there. Terror underneath. She was trapped inside her own power. Drowning in it alone.
"Emma." Kept my voice steady. Calm. The tone I used when I needed complete trust. "I know you can hear me under there. I need you to listen now."
No response. Power pulsed stronger instead.
I wiped blood from my nose with the back of my hand. Kept talking anyway. "You're not alone. We're all here. Ryan. Kai. Cole." His name stuck in my throat. "We came for you. Not leaving without you."
Her fingers twitched. Small. But conscious movement maybe.
"I need to tell you something true," I said. Hardest words I'd ever shaped. "About everything. About what I've been doing."
The power fluctuated. Like she was listening underneath.
"I've manipulated you from the start." Admission tasted like copper and shame. "Every conversation we had. Every touch. Every single look. I calculated it all. Read your expressions. Shaped my responses to get specific reactions from you."
Her breathing changed pattern. Faster now.
"I told myself it was necessary strategy. That controlling you protected the society. Protected all of us from risks." Moved closer. Six inches. The power burned against my skin. "But that was just a lie. Justification for doing what I was already good at. What my family trained me for since childhood."
Blood ran warm from my ears. I felt it trickling down my neck. Didn't matter anymore.
"My father taught me people were puzzles to solve. Find the right pieces. Push the right pressure points. Get predictable outcomes every time." My hands started shaking. Not from her power. From saying things I'd buried for years. "He taught me connection was weakness. Caring made you vulnerable. Love was just another tool for gaining leverage over someone."
Emma's eyes flickered. Almost focused on something.
"I believed him completely. For so many years." I reached out. Hand hovering over hers. Not touching yet. Afraid to. "Then I met you. Everything I thought I knew stopped working right."
Power around her pulsed different. Like a heartbeat trying to find rhythm.
"You were supposed to be easy to read. Easy to predict and control and use." Words coming faster. Desperate underneath the control. "But I couldn't read you. Not fully. You had depths I couldn't map no matter how hard I tried. Reactions I couldn't predict. You were real in ways I'd forgotten people could be."
Her fingers moved toward mine. Barely visible. But conscious.
"I kept trying to manipulate you anyway. Kept pretending I had everything under control." My voice cracked on the edges. "Because admitting I didn't scared me more than anything in my life. Admitting I cared about you. Actually cared. Not as strategy or leverage. Just as you. That terrified me completely."
The pressure lessened. Just slightly. Enough to pull deeper breath.
"I told myself the bond was the problem. Psychic connection making me feel things I wouldn't normally feel." Watched her face. Saw awareness creeping back into her eyes. "Another lie. The bond just made it impossible to hide from truth anymore."
Her eyes met mine. Really met them. Emma was there. Coming back.
"I love you." Three words I'd never said to anyone. Never wanted to say. Never thought I'd mean. "Not because it's strategic. Not because it serves any purpose. I love you and it makes me weak and vulnerable and I don't care. I just need you to come back to us."
Tears tracked down her face. Real tears from real feeling.
"Cole is dying." Voice broke completely. "You're killing him without meaning to. His heart stopped. He's dying right now because he loved you enough to risk everything he had."
Her horror bled sharp through the bond. Clear. Focused finally.
"You have to control this power," I said. "Pull it back inside. Stop draining what you don't mean to take. You can do it. You're stronger than this chaos. Stronger than anything they did to you in this place."
Her hand closed around mine. Full contact.
Power slammed through me hard. For a second I thought I'd die like Cole. Heart stopping. Everything ending quick.
But Emma's consciousness surged up instead. Wrapped around mine through the bond. She was there. Fully aware. Fully present and fighting back.
The power around her pulled inward fast. Sucking back like water circling a drain. The pressure released all at once. Crackling energy faded to nothing. Gone.
She gasped hard. Choked on air. Her eyes wild but seeing now. Aware of everything.
"Blake," she whispered. Voice completely wrecked. "What did I. What happened to."
I turned. Looked at Cole still on the floor. Ryan doing compressions. Kai counting out loud. Both their faces devastated.
"Emma," I said. Gentle as I knew how. "Cole touched you. Tried to anchor the bond. Your power stopped his heart."
She looked past me. Saw him there. Her whole face crumbled inward.
"No." Tried sitting up. Fought against restraints still holding her waist down. "No no no. Cole. COLE!"
She screamed his name. Raw sound. Broken completely. Ryan stopped compressions. Checked for pulse again with shaking fingers. His face told the story before his mouth did.
"He's not breathing," Ryan said. Clinical words failing him. "No heartbeat. No neurological response."
Emma's power flared again. Different now. Controlled but desperate. She was reaching for Cole through the bond. Trying to restart what she'd stopped.
The bond stayed silent where Cole should be. Empty void.
She'd killed him. The one who always protected her. Who'd walked through her attacks to reach her. Who'd sacrificed knowing exactly what would happen.
Emma made a sound I'd never heard a human make. Animal grief beyond language.
Her power exploded outward again. Not attacking. Searching. Desperately hunting for Cole's consciousness in the dark somewhere.
Lights flickered throughout the facility. Equipment sparked and died. The building shook.
"Emma, stop," I said. "You'll collapse this whole place on us."
She didn't stop. Couldn't. Her power kept searching. Kept calling his name through channels I couldn't see.
Then something impossible.
The bond flickered. Once. Faint like dying light.
But it flickered.
Cole's thread. Still there. Still connected somehow.
Emma felt it too. Eyes went huge. She pulled harder on that thread. Pouring everything into it.
"Come back," she whispered. Then louder, stronger. "Cole, come back. Please come back. I'm sorry. So sorry. Come back to me."
On the floor Cole's body jerked once. Then still.
Ryan checked pulse. Face confused. "I felt. Something. I don't know what but."
Emma pulled harder through the bond. I felt it burning. She was giving Cole her life force. Reversing what she'd taken. Forcing his heart to beat through sheer desperate will.
The bond burned bright. Hot.
Cole's chest moved. Shallow breath. Another.
His eyes opened. Unfocused. Confused. Alive.
Emma collapsed backward on the table. Still conscious but emptied. Tears streaming down both sides of her face.
"You came back," she breathed. "You came back to us."
Cole sat up slow. Hand pressed to his chest over his heart. "What. What happened?"
"You died," Kai said. Voice shaking badly. "Heart stopped. You were dead on the floor."
Cole looked at Emma. Understanding spread across his face. "You brought me back."
She nodded. Couldn't form words.
But I saw something else. Something that made cold spread through my stomach.
Bringing Cole back had cost her. Her skin looked translucent now. Wrong. Veins showing too dark beneath like bruises spreading.
She'd given him too much. Poured her own life force into restarting his stopped heart.
She was dying. Slowly maybe. But dying.
And she knew it. I saw acceptance in her eyes. Relief that at least she'd saved him.
"Emma," I said. "What did you just do?"
She smiled. Sad. Tired. Already fading. "What I had to."
Her eyes closed. Breathing slowed to shallow.
Monitors beside her started shrieking alarms. Numbers dropping fast across all screens.
She'd saved Cole.
But we were losing her instead.
