Chapter 56 Generational Betrayal

Chapter 56 Generational Betrayal
Emma Stone - POV
The drug still burned. Slower now but eating through me steady. I stared at the ceiling. Cracks spiderwebbed across concrete. I counted them. Tried to anyway. Numbers kept slipping.
Something touched my mind.
Not the bond. Different. Older, like worn fabric.
Emma. Evelyn's voice. Clear inside my skull. Can you hear me?
I thought back. Maybe. Didn't know how this worked. Yes.
Relief washed through, not mine. The collar blocks your bond to them, but not bloodline. They didn't think of that.
How long? My thoughts moved thick like honey.
Minutes. Pause. Her fear leaked through. I need to tell you what they are. What the Society really is.
Straps bit my wrists. Monitors beeped steady rhythm beside me. Vance left to get equipment. I heard it in the next room. Metal sliding. Something powering up, low hum that vibrated the table under me.
Fast then.
Memories hit me. Not words. Actual images from her head into mine.
The Society meeting. Chapel. Four men in suits, not robes. Evelyn younger, standing before them. Twenty one. My age exactly.
"Your abilities are remarkable, Miss Stone." One of them. Had Ryan's eyes. Cold and clinical. "We can help you develop them. Channel them for significant work."
"What work?" Young Evelyn.
"Research. Academic study." Another man, Blake's sharp smile on different face. "Understanding human mind's potential. Scientific advancement."
It looked good. She agreed.
Next memory slammed harder. Evelyn strapped down. Younger doctors. Earlier equipment but same purpose.
"Military wants predictive capabilities," a doctor said. Not to her. To men watching through glass. "Early warning systems. Intelligence. Applications are significant."
Evelyn tried speaking. Couldn't. Drugged already.
"How soon can we replicate this artificially?" Cole's build on older man.
"Genetic markers are complex. Years of testing needed."
"Then test. That's her purpose."
More memories. Years compressed. Evelyn learning truth piece by piece. Records she shouldn't see. Weapons built from her blood. Students vanishing for experiments.
Her choice to run. Faking death during ritual. Almost crossing into Canada.
Vance. Younger face, same dead eyes. His team grabbing her.
"You were never leaving," he'd said. "Too valuable. Your bloodline is unique."
Why? I pushed the thought at her. Why different?
Because I refused. Old pain soaked her words. First conduit to understand and say no. That refusal changed my genetics. Made my abilities defensive. Impossible to extract fully or copy.
I felt the meaning under her words. Her power evolved as protection. Mine inherited it. That's why I read people's fears without trying. Why danger hit me before it arrived. Survival coded into DNA.
You gave it to me.
Yes. They don't know yet. Think you'll cooperate. Be controllable. Her presence pressed closer. They're wrong.
The door opened. Vance with two techs wheeling machines. Cables thick as my wrist. Something like a metal crown, wires sprouting everywhere.
"Subject stable," one tech said. Checked my monitors. "Vitals acceptable for extraction."
Vance moved to controls. Started adjusting settings. "Neural mapping first. Establish baseline before transfer attempt."
Emma. Evelyn urgent now. When extraction starts, your power spikes defensive. You won't control it. Don't fight that. Let it build.
What happens then?
I don't know. Mine manifested different. But yours is stronger. Second generation refusal. Defense should be amplified.
Should be. Great.
Techs lifted the crown. Moved toward my head.
"This establishes neural interface," Vance said. Like describing routine bloodwork. "Significant discomfort expected. Screaming is normal."
They placed it on me. Cold metal pressed my scalp. Small pricks as needles extended in. Not deep. Just contact.
Then they flipped it on.
Pain exploded white through my skull. Not the injection. This lived inside my brain. Foreign electricity forcing through private pathways. I screamed. Couldn't help it.
Monitors went wild. Numbers jumping. Alarms beeping harsh.
"Neural activity exceeding predictions," a tech said. Voice tight. "Should we pause?"
"No." Vance watched screens. Hungry look. "This is what we need. Her brain is opening. Continue mapping."
Pain got worse. I felt my power wake up deep inside. Angry. Defense kicking in without me asking. Energy building in my core. Hot and violent.
Let it build, Evelyn said again. Don't hold back.
But I was strapped flat. The power had nowhere to go. Kept building inside. Pressure mounting. Something would break eventually.
Visions hit me. Not memories. Futures. Possible ones branching from this moment.
Me dead on this table. Vera with my stolen power. Ryan, Blake, Cole, Kai dying when the bond snapped catastrophic.
Project Ascension making armies of enhanced soldiers from my genetics.
Blackwood burning. Students screaming.
The futures multiplied. Hundreds. Thousands. All ending bad. Death spreading outward like infection.
"Neural activity approaching critical," the tech said. Fear in his voice now. "Sir, we need to stop. She's going to seize."
"Hold." Vance made notes. Didn't look worried. "We're gathering invaluable data."
My power spiked harder. Building pressure felt like my skull cracking open. Visions came faster. Bleeding together into white noise drowning my thoughts.
Emma. Evelyn cut through chaos. You need to survive. Your power tries protecting you but doesn't know how yet. You guide it. Show it what you need.
How?
Think about them. The boys. Your bond. That connection is part of your power now. Use it.
I reached for the bond. Found empty space. The collar worked perfect. But I pushed harder anyway. Remembered each thread. Ryan's cool focus. Blake's sharp awareness. Cole's steady warmth. Kai's chaotic energy.
The emptiness pushed back. No connection possible.
My power kept building though. Still searching for outlet. Purpose.
If I couldn't reach them through the bond, maybe through visions. Show them where I was. What was happening.
I focused everything on that thought. Pushed my building power at it like forcing water through a closed pipe.
"Sir!" Tech's voice went high. "Something's wrong. Equipment registers massive psychic output. It's not mapping. It's transmitting."
Vance looked up. "Transmitting where?"
"Don't know. Readings don't make sense. Like she's broadcasting on a frequency that shouldn't exist."
Vance moved fast to controls. Started hitting switches. "Shut it down. Now."
"Trying. Equipment isn't responding. She's overriding controls somehow."
My power exploded out finally. I felt it leave in a wave. Not random. Directed. Searching across distance for four specific people.
The equipment sparked. Smoke rose from circuits. The crown heated up against my scalp. Burning smell.
But it was built for this. For containing conduits. Channeling their abilities. Controlling them.
My power hit invisible barriers in the equipment. Dampeners. Containment fields. All the tech they'd perfected through twenty years using Evelyn.
My power slammed those barriers. Trapped. Reflecting back.
At me.
"Containment field holding," Vance said. Relief in his voice. "Equipment working as designed. Her power can't escape facility parameters."
No. This wasn't right. I pushed everything into that transmission. If it couldn't reach them, if containment trapped it...
The reflected power hit me like drowning.
My body convulsed hard. Restraints cut into my wrists. Every nerve ending lit up. Monitors screamed. Vision went white.
I heard Vance shouting. Felt hands on me. Someone injecting something cold into my arm.
Mostly I felt my own power tearing me apart. Trapped inside with nowhere to go. Building pressure with no release valve.
Last thing I heard was Evelyn's voice. Distant. Fading out.
I'm sorry. So sorry. Didn't know they'd advanced containment this far.
Darkness took me under.
But in that darkness something else stirred. Something the equipment hadn't planned for.
My power wasn't done.
It was changing. Adapting to the trap.
Learning how to break it.
