He's the devil.
Chapter 73:
Kaya's pov.
Elior had woken up late at night, crying and I had to nurse him. While he fed, I could hear a lot of noise outside but I didn't bother to check, I was far too tired to go outside at that time.
All of sudden, I heard heavy footsteps outside, whoever it was seemed to be in a rush, and was heading my way. The heavy footsteps were followed by a series of loud knocks that startled both Elior and I.
He started to cry and I cuddled him, standing up to open the door. Marta burst in as soon as I unlocked the door, she was breathing like she had fallen from a high building. Her hands were shaking and she had this fear in her eyes that I hadn't seen before.
“What happened? Who is after you?” I took a peek outside to check if there was any threat coming but I saw no one. Although I could still hear the uproar outside.
“What's happening outside?”
“Listen to me Kaya, there's no time for an interview session. We have to go right now. Grab anything important you need and come with me!” She ordered, still looking flustered.
I was confused, she was getting me really scared. What is really going?
“But..”
“Kaya! It's really your decision if you want to die but I will not put my life in danger for you. Follow me if you want, if not, you can stand there and wait for someone to answer your questions!” She walked out in frustration and I gasped.
Something serious must be going on, the atmosphere holds a terror. I instantly grabbed my baby's blanket and ran after her, not bothering to bolt the door. I wrapped Elior in the blanket, following Marta as fast as I could, although she was very fast.
As we pranced through the array of buildings, I noticed that a lot of women were also running in the same direction as us. Some soldiers were carrying children, heading in thebdane direction too. This got me even more terrified as I became curious to know what was going on.
“Go! Go! To the safehouse!” The soldiers yelled, panic in the air.
I know what a safe house is, Lucian had one, infact, every pack did. In case of a war or any sort of breakout, we would take shelter there to wait it out. It was specifically built to accommodate women and children, allowing the men to face the incoming threat.
This made me gasp in fear as I trotted behind Marta. Could it be that a war is approaching? I thought these pack wars had ended, everything is supposed to be peaceful now. I can't risk any harm coming to my baby.
One of the women stumbled and fell, wincing loudly from pain. She was weeping bitterly but no one paid attention to her as they all were running for their own lives.
“My daughter! My daughter is back there please!” She cried out, I guess she was forced by the soldiers to run and leave her child. I felt bad for her.
“Get up and go! We will go back and get her.” One of the soldiers said to her before helping her back on her feet. She joined the others, rushing towards the safe house while looking back multiple times.
I almost ran into someone but I managed to regain composure and kept on following Marta.
We finally arrived at a tiny gate, leading into a small hut. The gate was heavily guarded, the walls more like towers with no means of climbing above it. The gate was opened and the large crowd of women and children trooped into the little hut.
I was busy wondering how such a small hut would contain everyone when I saw that the hut had a staircase leading into a larger space, my eyes widened in shock but there was no time for delay as I joined the others.
The cries of children filled the air, including Elior's.
“Don't cry baby, don't cry.” I cradled him, still curious to know what was going on.
“Did you see the corpses?” One of the women beside me asked and I looked up at her in amazement, shocked by her intriguing question.
“What? What corpses?” I inquired. She bit her lip, fear written all over her.
“The spies that were killed on their mission. Did you see them lying at the city gates? I got chills, something terrible is really about to happen.” She shuddered.
Dead bodies? When the hell did that happen? Was that what all the commotion was about? Are rogues attacking?
These questions kept repeating in my head and I desperately wanted answers.
“What happened? Who killed them?” I asked the woman but she blinked at me in confusion.
“Huh? I don't know, I have no idea. Just like you, I'm new here. I just found out a month ago that my mate is from this pack and then I moved here. I have no idea what's going on.” She answered, turning away to face the other women who were weeping.
There was so much noise in the safe house but no one was really saying anything to answer my questions. Marta was standing at the podium, discussing with some of the soldiers. When they were done speaking, the soldiers ordered for everywhere to be silent.
Soon, the noise died down and Marta cleared her throat to speak.
“Unfortunately, an ill fate has befallen our pack and something bigger than us is coming.” She paused and whispers filled the air. My heart skipped, fear taking a toll on me.
I don't know why I always seem to find myself in the center of trouble. I'm beginning to think that I'm bad luck because an issue always arises everywhere I go. What will happen to Elior and I now?
Absolutely no one is our friend in this pack, how do we survive in an emergency? Where do I go from here?
“For now, we will remain here until further information is passed.” Marta stepped down and the uproar began again.
“I heard Axel is behind this.” Someone whispered behind me.
“Axel!? Not that tyrant! We're definitely done for!” Another one squealed.
Who is Axel?
At that moment, a loud shriek was heard from outside and the lights went out. I clutched Elior, my breath seizing.
