The New Presence

The New Presence
Chapter 11
The New Presence

The forest was thick with silence, but my mind was anything but.

Every step I made grated into the earth like I walked on the bones of what was. Betrayal lingered in the air like smoke that would not clear, curling its way around me, choking me. Kael's face flashed into my mind, his grin knife-edged and poisonous, the memory of his blood-stained hands forever branded in my brain. Mira's laughter followed, low and lethal, the sound of a sister I used to love now turned serpent.

They had taken everything from me—my father's name, my pack, my home. Even the bonds of family. I was nothing but ashes.

And yet, in those ashes, Ronan had found me.

I recalled his unflinching eyes, the scar above his collarbone, how he'd knelt with me beside my father's grave as if it were the most normal thing in the world. Being close to him had been like having rock beneath my feet, holding me upright when I would've fallen. He had been more than a guard, more than a reminder of what loyalty could look like. With him, I had felt something I had thought long buried: the possibility of belonging.

But even that frightened me. Because if Kael and Mira had shown me anything, it was that trust was a two-edged sword.

I walked farther, away from Ronan, away from the clearing. The air was chillier here, thinner, as if to warn me that I had gone too far. But I needed the distance. I needed to breathe without the weight of eyes on me, without Ronan's strength making me remember how weak I still was.

I had sworn on my father's grave. I had taken a life with my own two hands. I had blood on my soul now, yet the wound inside me still ached with emptiness.

Who was I becoming?

The question haunted me with every beat of my heart.

I stopped at a stream, its waters glinting silver in the moonlight. I knelt, skimmed the surface, and watched the ripples distort my reflection. A girl stared back at me, eyes too old, mouth too set. Not the Selene who used to run through these woods barefoot, wind in her hair laughing. Not the Selene who believed family was invincible.

This Selene was different. Something forged from loss, fire, and fury.

And yet, I was so terribly afraid.

I closed my eyes, speaking to the night. "Father… tell me I'm strong enough. Tell me this path won't devour me whole."

The forest gave no answer.

But then… a sound.

A twig cracked behind me, sharp and deliberate. I caught my breath. I rose slowly to my feet, tense, my hand reaching reflexively for the dagger Ronan had given me. My heart pounded, a warning in my blood.

"Who's there?" I said, steadying my voice despite the parched feeling in my throat.

Silence.

And then, from the darkness, he stepped.

Tall. Broad-shouldered. His presence filled the clearing like a tide rising to drown the shore. His eyes caught the moonlight first—striking, commanding, the unmistakable eyes of an Alpha. His movements were unhurried, deliberate, as if the very ground bowed to his feet.

My breath stilled in my chest.

He wasn't Kael. He wasn't Ronan. He was something entirely other.

And when our gazes clashed, the world tilted, the air condensing between us like a bowstring being pulled taut.

I had just met another Alpha.

And I knew, deep in my bones, that nothing would ever be the same again.
