Chapter 128 Consequences and Hidden Truths
Chapter 128 Consequences and Hidden Truths
Adam still checked the boy’s pulse. He didn’t know when things had gotten out of control, only that now there was an innocent child dead in front of him.
“Conner, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean for this…” Adam couldn’t speak. He thought Elizabeth would be disappointed when she found out he had allowed this to happen.
Adam called the cleaning crew. They would have to erase all traces of the family there and stage a scene elsewhere. The intention was to do it in a way that the family could later take and bury the boy’s body. At least he would have a dignified burial.
Adam entered the house and Katryna was calmly leaving the bathroom. She was wearing a robe and didn’t seem shaken by what she had just done.
Adam saw her sit on the sofa and turn on the TV. He found it absurd that she felt no remorse for what she had done.
“Darling, have they already cleaned everything up?” Katryna asked, looking at the TV.
“I want you to get out of here!” Adam said through gritted teeth.
“What?”
“Take everything you have here and leave! Get out of my life, Katryna.”
“Adam, what’s your problem?” She stood up, confused.
“I’ve spent the last few hours asking myself that. I asked myself where I went wrong. How did I let things get to this point? I realized the answer is you! Your presence destroys me… So get out of here. This is the last time. No matter what you say or do, I want you far away from me.”
Adam left the house and called Dave on the phone. He made it clear that he would only enter the house again once Katryna was gone. He went to Elizabeth’s house to enjoy the happy moment with his sister and try to forget what he had witnessed.
Adam was announced and rang the doorbell. Jonathan opened the door furiously, pulled Adam inside by his jacket, and threw him to the floor.
“Fuck, Adam, how could you do this?” Jonathan shouted at him.
“What are you talking about?”
“You killed a child? You shot Conner’s son? Adam, you were only supposed to scare the man, not this!”
“I! I didn’t do this, Jonathan,” Adam said, still on the floor.
“The cleaning guy called me! He told me what you did. Uncle James forgave Conner’s debt. After all, you took much more from him.”
“Jonathan, believe me… It wasn’t me,” Adam shouted those words as Elizabeth appeared in the living room.
“My brother, why did you do this?” Her eyes were watery. She saw Jonathan’s anger when he heard the story and he couldn’t lie. “You killed a child, Adam. What have you become?” Elizabeth said, placing her hand on her belly. Besides feeling more emotional, she couldn’t help but think of her own unborn child.
“Elizabeth, don’t be like this. Listen to me! If you knew what you prevented today…”
Elizabeth sat on the sofa and Jonathan stayed hugging her. Adam narrated every event, from when he picked up Conner on the street.
“That’s what happened. It was an accident. And even if it had been intentional, I didn’t intend to do anything to the man, much less kill a child,” Adam said and hugged Elizabeth. He kissed her forehead and wiped her tears.
“Jonathan, what now? They want my brother dead, but he wasn’t to blame,” Elizabeth said, worried. As soon as Jonathan was informed, the cleaning person had called one of the partners. They were demanding punishment for Adam from James. In fact, they wanted him dead.
“I’ll report all of this to Uncle, but I need proof.”
Jonathan got up to leave and Adam called him.
“I don’t want you to kill Katryna. I know she made a terrible mistake, but I was wrong to let her get so close to what I do. You have my word that she is out of my life. I will never approach that woman again, but I don’t wish for her death…”
“I’ll tell that to Uncle too. We’ll see what happens.”
Jonathan left and Adam sat next to Elizabeth on the sofa. She rested her head on his shoulder and he placed his hand on her belly.
“It’s strange…” he said.
“What’s strange?”
“I look at you and everything seems the same, but here there’s a little being that has already changed my life.”
“If your nephew has already changed your life, imagine when you become a father? You’ll be the best of all.”
“I don’t dream of that, but I promise to be the best uncle. And mind you, I’ll be competing with Dave, Noah, and Anthony, but I know I’ll be the best.”
Adam noticed the cut on Elizabeth’s forehead. She hadn’t told him she was hurt. He questioned her and she told him about the accident. He said a forensic inspection was nonsense since she had felt unwell and that’s why she crashed.
“Have you told our father yet? Or Dave?”
“No, I told you and then all of this happened… Shall we call Dave? Jonathan must be telling Uncle. He’ll probably come see me soon… So Dave is the only one left.”
“Okay, I’ll call…”
Adam dialed and put it on speaker.
“Dave, guess where I am?” Adam asked.
“You’re either hiding after the shit you did or you’re fucking Katryna.”
“Gross, Dave, respect me!” Elizabeth said indignantly beside Adam.
“I’m not hiding, but I’m here at Eliz’s. She has some news for you…”
“Tell me, little sister, what is it now?”
“I’m pregnant! I’m giving Jonathan a child!”
“Finally… I’m happy! When did you find out?”
Elizabeth narrated the accident and the moment of discovery again. Dave laughed, saying he would teach the child everything wrong he could and that Elizabeth would live fighting to keep him in line.
After that, Elizabeth hung up and went to the kitchen with Adam. She would make a dinner to celebrate the pregnancy.
Dave hadn’t mentioned it, but he was at his father’s house. He had heard the entire conversation and had pretended to be attentive so his sister would reveal everything.
“Well, Nathan Wolf, you’re going to be a grandfather…” Dave said.
“Yeah… The plan didn’t work…”
“What do you mean?” Dave asked.
“I said your sister would pay me for the offense at that wedding. I wanted her dead, but if she at least lost the child, it would already be great news.”
“Dad, I know you don’t like Elizabeth, but don’t you think you’re going too far?”
“Dave, you are my beloved son… Today I had the opportunity to get rid of Elizabeth and Adam. I hope that with at least one of them I get lucky and can attend the funeral of one of the two.”
Nathan had sabotaged Elizabeth’s car. He knew she would drive and thought he would take advantage of the opportunity. What saved her was the malaise. When she felt unwell, Elizabeth reduced her speed and the crash ended up not being so serious. But Nathan would still try something. For now, he would let Elizabeth enjoy the happiness of her pregnancy.
