Chapter 126 An Unexpected Gift

Chapter 126 An Unexpected Gift
The week was pure pleasure. They truly enjoyed their honeymoon and soon returned home even more in love.

The following week, Jonathan went to work early. He had some pending matters and needed to give them attention. Life seemed truly peaceful for them.

.

2 MONTHS LATER...

“Uncle, he’s been stringing us along for days. We can’t allow this anymore…”

“True, his debt has only grown… Send him to Adam. Let him handle the collection. Tell him to go easy on the guy. He’s a family man who doesn’t really know what he got himself into. But just going through his hands, we know the man will sort it out.”

Jonathan passed the collection information to Adam. He would only need to give the man a scare, but he would do it his way.

After a long day, Elizabeth would meet Jonathan at a restaurant. They did this a few times a month, enjoying each other’s company and having dinner out.

She went by car. Jonathan had left earlier with James and the morning had been rainy. At dusk, it was also raining a little, but nothing worrying. Elizabeth had received the dinner invitation in the middle of the day. She loved Jonathan’s spontaneity. He liked surprising her and was getting better and better at it.

Jonathan arrived quickly at the place, which was close to his office. He waited at the table and even ordered the fruit juice that Elizabeth liked. He dialed her number when he noticed he had already been waiting for quite a while. He had brought a rose he bought on the way — it was Elizabeth’s favorite flower. She didn’t like large quantities of flowers, but a single rose always caught her attention.

Concern began to hit Jonathan. After more than an hour of delay and unanswered calls, he decided to look for her. He called a taxi and would make the trip to the place where Elizabeth worked. He needed news about her.

On the way, he noticed the traffic forming and some police cars passing by. Jonathan was in a taxi, since he planned to return in Elizabeth’s car.

“Sir, stop! Stop now!” Jonathan shouted upon seeing a car being towed. An accident had happened there. He recognized the car model and could only hope it was a coincidence.

Jonathan approached and looked at the license plate. He couldn’t believe it. It was Elizabeth’s car, but there were no signs of her. He hadn’t even received an emergency call.

“Sir, where is the person who was driving the car?” Jonathan asked one of the officers.

“It was a woman. She was taken to the hospital… Do you know her?”

“That’s my wife’s car. Can you tell me which hospital they took her to?”

“She was taken to Presbyterian Hospital. The ambulance left here not long ago…”

Jonathan ran back to the taxi and urged the driver to hurry to the hospital.

“The woman from the accident is my wife… Where is she?” Jonathan said desperately at the reception. One of the attendants accompanied him to the floor where Elizabeth was. He reached the door of the room, where a doctor was treating a cut on her eyebrow and Elizabeth was unconscious.

“Elizabeth…” Jonathan said. He took her hand and kissed it. He wasn’t expecting to see his wife injured. “Doctor, how is she?”

“She’s fine. She’s not in any danger. She took a strong blow to the head and we sedated her to treat the injuries, but she’ll wake up soon and be okay. She’ll stay here today, but tomorrow she can already go home.”

Jonathan sighed in relief. The doctor was leaving but stopped at the door.

“Oh, I’ll make a report that should be given to her obstetrician. The fetus is fine, but rest and monitoring will be necessary.”

Jonathan first nodded, then processed the sentence and went after the doctor.

“Doctor! Is she pregnant? Is that what you’re telling me?” Jonathan stopped him in the hallway and asked.

“Yes. I’ll bring her chart, but the answer is yes. We did an abdominal ultrasound and located the fetus. Didn’t you know?”

“No. Not even she knows yet… It will be a beautiful surprise when she wakes up.”

Jonathan had noticed that in the last few weeks Elizabeth had been feeling a little unwell. Since it was mild, they hadn’t paid much attention. He felt some suspicion when, the previous week, she said she wanted to eat chicken pie or roasted meat. He laughed and thought she was joking, but Anthony had heard the conversation and brought it to her. He saw Elizabeth eat with gusto the meat dishes that Lays prepared.

He stayed by Elizabeth’s side. She only woke up in the early hours of the morning. She was dazed and didn’t really know what had happened.

“Jonathan… Jonathan, where are we?” Elizabeth asked as she opened her eyes.

“We’re at the hospital. There was an accident. Can you tell me what happened?”

“I don’t know. I felt dizzy, but I don’t know at what moment…”

“It’s okay. The important thing is that you’re fine.”

Elizabeth had felt dizzy inside the car. For safety, she tried to stop, but something was wrong and she couldn’t. Luckily, she wasn’t at high speed, but she ended up hitting the protective wall and losing consciousness. What saved her life was the airbag working perfectly. Jonathan thought the accident had happened only because Elizabeth had felt unwell. He made a mental note not to let her drive during the pregnancy. Even so, he would request an inspection on Elizabeth’s car. He wanted to be sure nothing there was out of the ordinary.

“Eliz, I already spoke with the doctor. As soon as it gets light, we’ll go home. He said you’re fine and our baby is too. Even though he’s small, he’s strong…”

Jonathan spoke with tears in his eyes and Elizabeth almost jumped out of the bed.

“Jonathan, you can’t joke about this… We’ve been trying for 12 years. You had surgery, we tried insemination. I reached a point where I gave up on the idea of being a mother. So Jonathan, if this is some kind of joke, I won’t like it.”

Elizabeth held back her tears as she spoke. After so many failed attempts, would she finally have the joy of being a mother?
