Chapter 120 Years Later
Chapter 120 Years Later
Jonathan and Elizabeth lived a full love. She still tried to get closer to the family. Her father had lunch with her and Jonathan a few times a year. Usually these meals were at Adam’s house. It was the way she found to get closer to her brothers. Jonathan didn’t like the idea. He didn’t trust his father-in-law and still saw nothing good in Adam, much less in Dave.
Adam kept her company and talked to her. Dave seemed recovered, but his attention was turned to their father.
“Adam, I brought everything you asked for. Can you look at this for me, please?” Elizabeth said quietly while washing some vegetables in his kitchen.
“I don’t know why you don’t ask Jonathan, or try to learn. It’s not that difficult…” Adam replied, laughing. Elizabeth was terrible with numbers. Since she was working, she needed to pay income tax and also pass the monthly expenses and costs on to Jonathan. He was methodical with the financial part, but Elizabeth always forgot some things or failed to collect some receipts. In the end, she asked Adam to organize everything and she would give it to Jonathan. He pretended not to know that his brother-in-law took care of it, but whenever he had any doubt about Elizabeth’s financial notes, he would call him and Adam would gladly help.
“Where’s Dave? He knew I was coming today…” Elizabeth asked.
“He’s at our father’s house. He should arrive when we’re setting the table with him.”
“How do you feel about him?”
“Well, Dave doesn’t talk about Milly anymore and doesn’t accept anyone mentioning her name. He’s not drinking as much. He goes out some nights, but he doesn’t look for prostitutes. He ends up winning over some random girl, but it never goes beyond the first date. He never sleeps with the same woman twice.”
“Should I be worried about something?” Elizabeth stopped and turned to him, waiting for the answer.
“No… He’s calm. It’s his way of moving on.”
“And you? How are you?”
“I’m fine. Katryna and I are fine. She just didn’t come today because you don’t like her…”
“I don’t like your relationship. Without her, you’re different. I can see the goodness in you. When you’re with her, you lose yourself and become cruel, and I don’t like that.” Elizabeth rolled her eyes every time she heard Katryna’s name. She thought the woman was manipulative and, worse, she led Adam into an abyss of cruelty.
“Don’t be silly, Elizabeth. I don’t change that much…”
“You do! Come here, Adam. Do you plan to marry her? After all, you’ve been on and off for almost 10 years. Are you going to get out of this?” Jonathan asked as he approached.
“I don’t know. Actually, she wants to. She insists on living here, but I’ve already told her I like my freedom.”
They served lunch and soon Dave and Nathan arrived. Elizabeth served her husband and sat down to eat as well.
“My daughter, aren’t you going to serve your father or your brothers?” Nathan asked.
“Sorry, Dad…” Elizabeth said and put food on her father’s plate. She even picked up Adam’s plate, but he didn’t let her. He served himself and stared at Dave. The brother understood the message that he should do the same. Dave served himself and they ate practically in silence.
“My daughter, you’ve been married for so long. Aren’t you going to give your husband children?” Nathan knew the story. Dave had narrated every part of Elizabeth’s disappointment. He told about the surgery Jonathan had done and that they had even tried artificial insemination that didn’t work. He knew Elizabeth had been sad for days because of it and wanted to provoke her.
“Mr. Wolf, Elizabeth and I have a busy professional life. She works a lot. It would be difficult to take care of a child.” Jonathan said, and Elizabeth looked at him gratefully.
“I understand, but in our world heirs are important. At least her mother knew how to give me that.”
After the moments of tension, Nathan left and Elizabeth started to tidy up the kitchen. Adam offered to help while Jonathan talked to Dave on the sofa.
“So, my friend, how are you? We hardly talk anymore. You live at your father’s house.”
“Jonathan, the problem isn’t just me. You live watching Elizabeth, I know! You don’t have time for anything else except following her.”
“Not that much. She’s been working alone, driving up and down alone, spending more than she earns.”
They laughed at Jonathan’s situation. If Elizabeth had to handle the accounts alone, she would live in debt. It was the lack of financial sense that he always pointed out to her.
After everything was organized, Jonathan and Elizabeth left. The quiet life was really good. It seemed that the time of peace had finally arrived after years fighting for love.
