Chapter 44
Chapter 44
Raelyn POV
Morning light slipped I stayed still for a moment, listening to the soft murmur of distant voices echoing through the halls. It felt… peaceful almost unreal.
Rafael had already left for the morning—he had some meeting, I assumed—but the warmth of his presence still lingered in the room.
The faint scent of his cologne clung to the pillow beside me, and I breathed it in, letting it calm my mind . My fingers traced the sheets, remembering everything we did last night.
For the first time in weeks, I allowed myself to feel safe. Not the false security of a locked room, but the kind that comes from quiet, from small ordinary things like waking up without fear.
A soft knock interrupted my thoughts.
“Raelyn?” Sophia’s voice called from the doorway.
I turned, squinting through the sunlight, and she stepped in with a tray of coffee mugs, smiling like she had the entire world under control. “Morning, sleeping beauty.”
“Morning,” I replied, my voice rough from sleep.
She plopped down beside me, swinging her legs over the edge of the bed. “I brought you coffee.” She waved a mug toward me.
I chuckled, taking the mug. “You’re lucky I didn’t make you drink yesterday’s leftovers.”
Sophia wrinkled her nose. “Disgusting! Anyway, I wanted to see if you survived the night. You look… different today. Softer.”
I tilted my head, startled. “Softer?”
“You know,” she said, sipping her coffee. “Not tense like you had been the last few days. And Rafael is… different around you. Like you’ve tamed a little storm.”
The corner of my mouth curved involuntarily. “I wouldn’t say ‘tamed.’ He’s still the same Rafael.”
She smirked. “Yeah, but the he isn’t hitting anyone else today, huh?” She leaned closer, lowering her voice. “I’ve never seen him like this. He smiles when you enter the room. He laughs. He touches you without thinking twice.”
I swallowed, trying to ignore the warmth spreading in my chest. “You really notice all of that?”
“Of course,” she said. “I’ve lived here long enough. You’re doing something that… nobody else has and trust me, the man notices when people see him. He’s been guarding his world like a fortress for years. But you…” She shook her head, half-smile teasing, half-serious.
“You’ve got him off balance. In a good way.”
I stared at her, feeling a mix of pride and unease. Pride because Rafael’s eyes softened for me unease because the world I stumbled into had never known softness for anyone.
Mateo’s voice called from the corridor loud and teasing, “Hey, sister-in-law! You stealing my brother’s heart already?”
Sophia snorted. “Careful, Mateo. You sound like a lovesick idiot.”
“I am not!” Mateo protested. “But come on, Raelyn. You’ve got him acting like a normal human being. He even laughed at me yesterday! He laughed!”
I laughed despite myself. “That doesn’t sound like him at all.”
“Exactly!” Mateo grinned, tossing a small pillow at me. “See? He’s different and you did it. Be proud.”
I shook my head, amused, but a small knot formed in my stomach. Their teasing lightened the room, but it reminded me that peace never lasted long in Rafael’s world. And perhaps, my presence only delayed the inevitable storm.
By the time I had finished breakfast, Lorenzo appeared in the doorway of the dining room. Unlike Mateo and Sophia, he wasn't the one to tease. He simply looked at me, calm and assessing, and my stomach tightened.
“Good morning, Raelyn,” he said softly. His dark eyes held a weight I couldn’t quite place.
“Morning,” I replied, setting my mug down carefully.
He took a step closer, lowering his voice. “Enjoy the peace while it lasts. It doesn’t stick around long in our world.”
I frowned. “What do you mean?”
He didn’t answer directly, only gave me a small, knowing look. “Just… pay attention. I'm not trying to scare you but always watch the way people move when they think no one’s looking. That’s when you’ll notice the things they’re not saying.”
My throat tightened. Lorenzo’s words carried the authority of someone who had survived this life longer than anyone should. I nodded, trying to mask the flutter of unease that rose in my chest.
“Yes,” I said softly. “I’ll… watch.”
He gave me a faint nod, then left as quietly as he came, leaving me replaying his warning in my mind.
After sometime I began to notice the subtle shifts Lorenzo had hinted at.
Guards who were supposed to guard outside lingered longer than usual in the hallways, pretending to check doors but they were clearly listening.
Conversations were cut off abruptly when I entered rooms, leaving unfinished sentences and wary glances. Even Mateo and Sophia, who usually relaxed, moved with a little more caution around me.
My pulse quickened. The house felt smaller somehow, I tried to remind myself that Rafael was still protecting me—that his hands, his presence, were shields I could rely on. Yet even with that, a feeling of uneasiness wouldn't go away.
Rafael returned in the afternoon. I heard the soft click of the gates before I saw him, and my chest leapt with a mixture of relief and something warmer, something deeper.
He found me on the veranda, still wrapped in one of his shirts, gazing over the fountain. His presence filled the space before he even spoke.
“Raelyn,” he said softly. The way he said my name made the hair on my arms rise.
“Rafael,” I whispered, my heart racing.
He came to stand beside me, leaning slightly so that the light caught his jaw, the curve of his shoulders, heat radiating from him. “You look… beautiful.”
I forced a small smile. “I try.”
“You do more than try,” he said quietly. “You make this place… better. Softer. Not just for me but for everyone too.”
The warmth in his eyes, the subtle strength in his voice, made me shiver slightly. I wanted to reach for him, to close the invisible distance that always lingered between us.
Mateo’s teasing voice rang out from nowhere interrupting our moment. “ Be careful, Raelyn! Don’t let him charm you into falling completely!”
Rafael smirked at that, a small, private curve of his lips just for me. He leaned closer, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “I’m already hopeless.”
I felt the pull between us, the magnetic tangle of desire and trust, yet beneath it, the tension. My eyes flicked toward the gates, toward the shadows where I knew someone was always watching.
Even in moments of fragile happiness, this world would never let me forget that peace was only a phase.
I realized, sitting there with Rafael’s hand brushing mine, that this fragile calm was a luxury and luxuries in Rafael's world always came with a price.
Yet, for the first time, I allowed myself to breathe fully. To feel... To hope.
Because at least for these hours, I was not just the pawn or the daughter of a man I didn't know, a mystery I did not yet understand.
I was Raelyn and in this moment, I belonged here.
