Chapter 79 THE SPACE BETWEEN WORDS
~ Wayne ~
I grumble in annoyance as I pull in front of Leslie's house. The only reason why I knew Charlotte was here is because when Leslie threw a party no one else from school bothered to throw their own.
I run an annoyed hand down my face, wanting to turn my car back on and leave the place. I knew she wasn't my problem, but I wasn't a bad guy.
I couldn't just leave her around guys who would take any chance to take advantage of a drunk girl.
After telling myself it would be quick getting her and dropping her off at home I get out of the car, walking towards the front door that was being blocked by a group of people shotgunning beers.
I don't know how she threw these parties knowing how disgusting people are, especially drunk high schoolers.
I'd already seen a pile of puke on the ground while I was walking inside to find Charlotte. It was the chunky kind too, didn't make the sight any better.
"Wayne man, I haven't seen you in ages!" Some guy holding a bottle of tequila yells at me. I don't think I've even met him before.
I smile at him, patting his shoulder while I walk on instinct towards the huge crowd yelling and cheering at something.
"Dumbass." I mumble, pushing through the crowd when I notice it's Charlotte trying to throw a punch at another girl.
I wince when she actually punches the girl who was screaming at her. The girl gets pushed onto the floor and starts crying as she holds onto her Jaw.
"You touched my boyfriend you fucking whore!" The girl screeches, her tears were instantly gone.
She stands up, going for Charlotte's hair.
I quickly push to the front, grabbing Charlotte's arm and dragging her back as much as I could before the girl could attack.
" He came to me bitch, fight him and his stinky fish breath!" Charlotte stumbles out, hiccuping after. The other girl starts screaming at her again but I'm too busy dragging Charlotte out of the damn house to listen.
" Let go of me I'm not done with her!" Charlotte yells, trying to break out of my grip.
"You're embarrassing yourself." I say, dragging her outside as I walk us back towards my car.
"What's embarrassing is her fried hair, I pulled it once and that bitches hair started coming out in clumps." She laughs, almost falling onto the cement.
I hold her back up with one hand, opening the car door with the other and shoving her in.
"Ow, be more gentle will you." She groans while rubbing her arm in pain. I'm sure she was lying though, because she was holding the arm I didn't even touch.
What the hell did I get myself into?
"You should be glad I came before it got worse."
I scowl, turning the car on quickly. I just wanted to take her back to her fucking house so I didn't have to deal with her anymore.
"Ugh who cares." She grumbles, looking over at me before laughing. I look at her with my eyebrows furrowed. Why the hell was she laughing?
I turn back towards the front, sighing while I look through my car to find a water bottle she could drink from.
"I seriously hope someone took a video of you so can see how much of a dumbass you ar-" I'm cut off when she grabs my face with both of her hands, forcing me to face her. I watch her in confusion until she moves her lips onto mine out of nowhere.
Charlotte starts laughing and pulls away from me.
"Your lips just looked so kissable." She mumbles.
I sit there frozen while she just reclines her seat and goes to sleep. What was wrong with her? I seriously wanted to know.
My jaw clenches in annoyance before I take a deep breath in. " Where do you live." I ask, calmly waiting for a reply while I try forgetting about what just happened.
I turn back towards Charlotte when she doesn't answer, only to see her dead asleep.
" Really?" I scowl, not knowing what to do now.
How can someone even fall asleep that fast?
My head rests back on the seat as I look at her more closely. She was balled up in her spot, covering herself with her arms as a blanket.
Sighing I take off my jacket and throw it on her. I could only wait until she woke up to take her home.
The entire time I waited for Charlotte the only thing I could think of was the bracelet on Isabelle that had Calvin’s initial written on it.
I saw it on her wrist before the dinner, and it may or may not have been the reason why I shut the door on Calvin’s face at the restaurant.
It could just be a coincidence, but the yellow bracelet on Calvin’s wrist looked exactly like Elara’s, so it was hard to believe.
Maybe I was overthinking all of it
I shut my eyes in frustration. It was obvious Calvin liked her, I just wasn't sure about Elara.
She was hard to read, I had no idea if she even had any interest in me.
I couldn't get her out of my fucking head
The one thing I was sure of though, was that I'd confess to her officially at prom.
"I'm sorry." Charlotte suddenly mumbles in her sleep, causing me turn my head back towards her.
" Finally, what's your address?" I say relieved. She opens her eyes slowly, watching me with a sad look.
"I don't want to go back there." She mutters quietly.
" You live in a damn mansion, what's there to hate?" I say as I put my seatbelt back on, getting ready to drive back.
"Do you think I talk too much?" She mutters again, shutting her eyes.
" Would you just give me your add-"
" My parents get mad when I talk, but I don't understand it."
I raise an eyebrow at her, about to agree with them until she continues talking.
"I only realize they're right, when people tell me I'm annoying, or yell at me to shut up. That's when it makes me feel like maybe I really should just stop talking."
She says, her voice quieter than it was.
I sit there, watching her balled up body and her shut eyes. Her eyes were shut harder this time though, like she was trying to hold something back.
"Charlotte you don't have to-"
"Take my address and stop being so emotional, dickhead." She suddenly switches up, pushing her phone into my face. I grab it, glaring at her as she throws herself back into the same position, this time facing away from me.
" Why does she do this." I grumble under my breath while pulling out onto the road.
I can't help looking over at her while I drive, wondering if I should really take her back home after she'd told me she didn't want to go back.
The first conversation I had with Charlotte and her parents at Calvin and I's birthday party she never spoke a word.
Even at the dinner, the small amount of times she spoke, she got told to stop talking.
I never thought people could get insecure about talking too much.
I shake my head before continuing the drive.
Who knows what her parents would think if I let Charlotte stay with me all night, even she wouldn't want those thoughts in their hopeful heads.
Taking her back to her house was the only good option.
When we get to the house I open her door, about to help her out until I notice her eyes.
" Were you crying?" I ask genuinely.
Somehow she'd sort of sobered up, and pushed me away instead of answering my question.
I stumble back, watching her in confusion as she walks towards the gate of her house and punches in the code.
" You're welcome!" I say, letting out a frustrated breath while I watch her walk through the gate with no reply.
I don't think there was a single universe that existed where I'd understand her.
