CHAPTER 118: The Man She Feared.

CHAPTER 118: The Man She Feared.
Serena POV
The apartment remained silent long after the door closed behind Adrian. The quiet felt unnatural, as if the walls were waiting for something to happen. I stood in the center of the living room and listened to the faint hum of the city outside.
It was not the noise that unsettled me but the absence of movement inside the space around me. The air felt heavier than before, almost expectant, and I could not shake the sense that someone had taken a seat in the shadows and decided to wait for me to notice.
I walked toward the window, trying to steady my breathing. I looked down at the street below, where headlights cut across the pavement and pedestrians moved with the ordinary haste of people who had no idea how close danger often lived beside them.
That normalcy only made the tension inside my chest sharper. I touched the cold glass and let my thoughts settle on the single truth that had formed the moment Adrian stepped out of the apartment. Someone had been close. Very close. Too close for it to be a coincidence.
I turned from the window and walked slowly through the room, studying every corner as if I might discover something the police and Adrian’s men had overlooked.
Nothing appeared out of place, yet the unease refused to fade. I felt watched, although I knew I stood alone. When I passed the hallway mirror, I caught my own reflection and paused.
My expression looked controlled, but the strain beneath it was unmistakable. I looked like a woman who expected a ghost to step out from behind her. The disturbing part was that the man I feared had never been a ghost. He had been real, powerful, and willing to destroy anyone who interfered with his vision for me.
I left the mirror and moved into the bedroom. The bed remained unmade from earlier, the sheets twisted in a way that showed how abruptly I had risen when the first noise came from the hallway.
The air still carried a faint trace of Adrian’s cologne from his earlier presence and the memory of his hands on my waist had not yet faded from my skin. That warmth made the cold tension in my stomach feel even sharper. Desire and fear battled for dominance in a way that left my body confused, uncertain whether it wanted to reach for Adrian again or brace for the threat I felt closing around me.
I placed my hand on the mattress to steady myself. The fabric felt cool beneath my fingers. For a moment, I allowed my mind to wander back to the look Adrian had given me before he left. It had been protective and frustrated in equal measure, and the combination had tightened something deep inside me. The desire between us had grown stronger in every moment we spent together, but so had the danger that surrounded us. My pulse beat faster as I remembered the way he had stood in front of me earlier, close enough that I felt his breath on my cheek, close enough that one wrong step would have sent us deeper into an intimacy neither of us could walk back from.
I forced those thoughts aside. The air in the apartment shifted again, so faintly that it might have been imagined, yet my instincts reacted immediately.
I rose to my feet slowly and looked toward the doorway. The hallway light cast long shadows across the floor and one of those shadows seemed out of place. I walked forward cautiously, studying it until I reached the doorway.
It was only the angle of the lamp. Nothing more. I breathed out slowly and placed my hand against the doorframe to calm myself.
I stepped into the hallway and moved toward the kitchen. The light above the counter flickered once, then steadied. A chair sat slightly angled from the table, as if someone had risen from it only moments earlier. My heart lurched at the sight.
I knew with certainty that I had not left the chair like that. I approached it and touched the back lightly. The wood felt warm. Not warm from the sun or the lights but warm in a way that suggested someone had indeed been sitting there, leaning back, watching the apartment in silence.
I stepped back from the chair and felt the strength in my legs return only because fear demanded it. Someone had been in here with me. Someone had watched me walk through the rooms.
Someone familiar enough with my movements to know exactly when to step out before I caught them.
I turned toward the living room and saw it immediately. A small object lay on the coffee table. It had not been there earlier. I approached it slowly and felt my pulse quicken in a steady, painful rhythm. It was a photograph. When I picked it up, I recognized the image before my mind fully processed it. It showed a younger version of me, standing outside my childhood home, reaching for my father’s hand. The scene looked innocent, a moment captured at a time when I still believed he loved me without motive. Yet someone had left this here as a message.
A single line had been written across the bottom of the photograph in neat, controlled handwriting.
“You were never hidden from me.”
My breath caught in my throat. The handwriting belonged to the man I had feared since the moment I understood what power could do to a person. It was the handwriting that had filled pages of ledgers, contracts, and messages that sealed alliances and ruined families. It belonged to the person who believed he owned me, not as a daughter but as an instrument of his ambition.
Matteo Hale had been in the apartment.
I sank onto the sofa because my knees weakened too quickly for me to remain standing. I stared at the photograph and tried to understand how he had managed to escape every trap we set for him and reach me in a secure apartment without leaving a trace. This was not the behavior of a man who ran from his enemies. This was the behavior of someone who knew exactly how to move through the shadows and knew exactly how to make his presence felt without being seen.
The fear I felt did not come from surprise but from recognition. This was the man who had shaped my life with an invisible hand. He had orchestrated my marriage. He had manipulated Adrian. He had built a network of influence through the Vatican and the Council. He had created the identity I had struggled to escape since the day I first realized he used love as a weapon.
I held the photograph tighter until the edges curled beneath my fingers. My mind shifted from fear to anger. He had come here not simply to threaten me but to remind me that he could reach me regardless of the protection Adrian provided.
The thought of Adrian returning to discover what had happened created a different kind of tension in my chest. Adrian would not respond with caution. He would react with fury, and that fury would set off a chain of consequences that none of us could control.
I rose from the sofa and walked toward the bedroom again. My steps were steady, but my thoughts moved quickly. My father had left a message in the apartment. He wanted me to know he had been close. He wanted me to feel the same fear I had once felt as a child. But I was not the same girl he once controlled. I had survived betrayals, alliances, and the kind of violence that reshaped a person into someone stronger. If he wanted to frighten me, he underestimated me.
I reached the dresser and opened the top drawer. Inside lay a phone Adrian had given me for emergencies. I lifted it and pressed the screen. A list of contacts appeared, and Adrian’s name sat at the top. I hesitated before pressing it. I did not want him to return too quickly. Not yet. I needed time to think, and I needed to understand what my father’s next move might be before Adrian reacted.
I placed the phone on the dresser but did not turn it off. My reflection caught my attention again in the mirror above the dresser. I stepped closer and studied the woman looking back at me. My eyes were sharp, focused, and filled with a determination that had been absent earlier. Fear had not disappeared, but it no longer controlled my thoughts. It fueled them.
I walked back to the living room and placed the photograph in a drawer beneath the coffee table. I closed the drawer gently and took a slow breath. My father had left a message, but he had also made a mistake. He had revealed his presence and his confidence. Confidence created openings.
I sat on the sofa again and waited for Adrian. When the sound of his key turning in the lock reached my ears, I straightened my posture. I needed him to see that I was not shaken. I needed him to know that whatever we faced next, I would not stand behind him but beside him.
The door opened, and Adrian stepped into the apartment. His eyes went immediately to me, and the intensity of his stare settled something inside me. He looked more dangerous than the last time he stood in this room. He must have sensed the change in the air because he closed the door slowly and locked it.
He walked toward me with the controlled steps of a man who expected a threat to appear at any moment. I rose from the sofa, and when he reached me, his hand lifted to my chin. His touch remained steady, but the tension behind it spoke of the storm he carried inside.
His voice sounded low, almost quiet, but the restrained violence in it was unmistakable. “Tell me what happened.”
I looked into his eyes and felt the pull between us deepen. The silence stretched for a moment that felt charged with something more than fear. I lifted my hand and placed it over his, holding it against my face.
“He was here,” I said.
Adrian’s expression changed in a way that unsettled even the air around us. His jaw tightened, and his other hand wrapped around my waist with a firm, possessive strength that sent a tremor of heat through my body.
He stepped closer until the space between us disappeared. His breath brushed my cheek. His fingers tightened slightly at my waist. His voice sounded rougher when he spoke again.
“Show me.”
I nodded and led him toward the drawer. I opened it and handed him the photograph. He studied the image for several seconds. His grip on the photograph tightened until the paper bent. When he lifted his gaze to mine, his anger had settled into something far more controlled and far more dangerous.
He placed the photograph on the table and moved toward me again. His hands slid to my hips and pulled me closer with a force that I felt through every part of my body. I met his gaze without looking away, and the tension between fear and desire twisted so tightly inside me that breathing became difficult.
Adrian lowered his forehead to mine. His voice sounded almost like a growl.
“He will not touch you again.”
The intensity of his promise spread through me in a way that left my skin warm and my thoughts unsteady. His lips brushed mine lightly, and the brief contact sent a shiver through every nerve.
My hands rose to his chest, and I felt the steady, controlled strength in his heartbeat. I leaned closer, drawn by the quiet power of the moment, but he pulled back slightly. His restraint only heightened the pull between us.
He lifted my chin again and looked into my eyes with a focus that felt almost intimate. “I will find him.” I held his gaze. “I know.”
The weight of those two words connected us more deeply than any kiss. The danger outside the apartment grew stronger, but inside this room, the tension between us formed something fierce enough to match it.
The moment stretched, charged with desire and danger. Adrian leaned closer, not to kiss me but to speak quietly against my ear. His voice wrapped around me like a slow, deliberate touch.
“He is hunting you.”
I turned my head slightly and let my lips brush the edge of his jaw as I answered in a whisper that matched the darkness of the truth between us. “And you are hunting him.”
Adrian’s hand tightened at my hip, and the air between us thickened until it felt inevitable that one of us would break the restraint holding us in place. The heat of his body pressed against mine, and the promise of violence and desire mixed so completely that I no longer felt the boundary between them.
Before either of us moved, the lights in the apartment flickered.
Adrian’s body went still. He stepped away from me only enough to reach the nearest lamp. The lights flickered a second time, and then a soft click came from the hallway. The security panel reset itself without being touched.
Adrian turned slowly toward me. “He is not finished.”
I felt the truth settle in my bones. My father had not left the photograph to intimidate me. He had left it to mark the beginning.
Adrian moved to the door and checked the locks. His posture had shifted into something cold and deliberate. When he returned to me, his jaw remained tight, and his eyes carried the promise of what he intended to do next.
“We leave tonight,” he said. I nodded. “Where?” His answer came without hesitation. “Where will they come looking for you?”
My pulse quickened. “You want to draw him out.”
“I want him to make the mistake of thinking he still has control over you.”
I stepped closer until I could feel the heat of him again. “And if he does?”
Adrian lifted his hand to the back of my neck and held me gently but firmly. “Then I show him what happens when a man believes he owns what he never had.”
The lights flickered once more, and in that fleeting moment, I knew with absolute certainty that the man I feared was closing in, and the man I trusted was preparing to become something even more dangerous.
The war between them was coming and I stood at the center of it.
