Chapter 10
But I didn't get to see Nina.
A slightly older-looking maid pushed a food cart into my room.
I frowned, my tone cautious.
"Mr. Moretti promised me I could see my friend during dinner."
The maid looked at me and gently shook her head. "Dear, now is not the time. You need to eat your meal like a good girl, have a good sleep, and everything will start tomorrow."
Although she spoke politely, I could hear the finality in her tone.
I shrank back, sadness in my eyes.
Dinner was delicious, mashed potatoes covered in gravy, mixed with butter and cheese, very rich in flavor.
There was also a smoked chicken leg, a few slices of toasted bread with butter, and some pea puree.
And a cup of hot milk.
I had to admit, this was the most abundant and luxurious dinner I'd had in over ten years.
Just as I finished the last piece of fruit, I couldn't help but ask the maid standing before me like a statue.
"Has my friend Nina eaten?"
The maid quickly cleared away the cart in front of me and glanced at me coolly.
"I'm sorry, these matters have nothing to do with me. Perhaps when Mr. Moretti returns, you can ask him."
Hearing that man's name, I couldn't help but think of what had just happened.
I pressed my lips together and slowly lay down.
At this time, Kane had already arrived at the dock, where a beautiful woman was being forced to kneel at the edge.
Taking the cigar Bandel handed him, Kane took a casual drag. He slowly walked up to Mia and gently lifted her delicate, pretty face with the tip of his shiny leather shoe.
"Mia, I've always treated you pretty well." Kane's tone was extremely cold, making people's teeth chatter.
Mia trembled all over, tears streaming down her face. Pretending to know nothing, she shook her head. "Signor, I don't know what happened. Maybe you've misunderstood me, but I've truly been loyal to you."
Seeing Mia refuse to admit it, Kane said nothing more, just snapped his fingers.
Documents were thrown in front of Mia. These were all the evidence of her dealings with the rival family.
Mia seemed to have all the strength drained from her body, collapsing softly to the ground. No one even needed to hold her down anymore.
Suddenly, Mia seemed to realize something and started kowtowing to Kane, begging.
"Please, I've been by your side for so long and gotten nothing. Just for the sake of how well I've served you in bed, let me go."
"I can do more in the future, make you feel even better."
But Kane had no interest in wasting words with Mia.
He turned around and closed his eyes.
Bandel immediately stepped forward, raised his gun, and amid Mia's heart-wrenching pleas for mercy, the gunshot rang out.
Everything fell silent.
Without looking back, Kane said coldly, "Throw her in the sea to feed the fish. And her sister, too."
Just as Kane was about to leave, another person approached him and lowered his voice. "Luca says he wants to see you."
Kane raised an eyebrow but didn't answer immediately.
"He says he has something that can make Sonya more obedient."
A hint of interest finally showed in Kane's deep eyes. He glanced at the person beside him, who understood immediately.
"I'll arrange it right away."
On the dim streets of Lorande, drunken gamblers and penniless homeless people who had lost everything were everywhere.
When Kane appeared here, no one dared make a sound.
They could only silently watch him walk through that black door.
This was a place only people from the Moretti Family could enter.
Luca was waiting inside anxiously.
He had heard about Sonya being taken away, and knew that Kane had used a helicopter to bring her.
So he had an idea.
Luca knew Sonya all too well.
She was a girl who seemed weak but actually had quite a temper and personality.
If she really upset Kane, his own days probably wouldn't be so good either.
So he came to see Kane this time to make an exchange.
To get some money from Kane, and also to make Sonya obediently submit to Kane.
Hearing the bell at the door ring, Luca immediately stood up and looked at Kane nervously.
"Mr. Moretti, I'm sorry to disturb you so suddenly."
Kane acted as if he didn't see him and sat down directly across from him. "You have five minutes."
That was enough for Luca.
Luca pulled out a box from his chest.
The box looked very worn. Normally, even if it were placed in front of Kane, he wouldn't even look at it before tossing it aside.
Impatience flashed in Kane's eyes, and Bandel beside him spoke up. "Luca, you should know our boss's time is valuable. You'd better not bring some piece of junk here to exchange for money."
After all, nothing a gambling addict did would be surprising.
Luca shook his head fearfully. "No, no, no, this thing can make Sonya obedient."
Hearing Sonya's name, Kane's expression showed some interest.
He finally looked at Luca properly. "You should know the consequences of playing with me. Just now, I threw a woman who had slept with me into the sea."
Luca shrank back in fear, his expression terrified. "Please rest assured, what Sonya loves most is her mother. This is her mother's keepsake. Before, I lied to her, saying I sold this necklace for money. If you threaten her with this, she'll definitely obey."
Kane looked at the necklace in the box.
It was just an ordinary freshwater pearl, not even very lustrous, even worn.
Kane would feel it was beneath him to even use it as a toy.
But as a keepsake, it was indeed a good thing to use to threaten Sonya.
He picked up the box, his slender fingers carefully playing with the cheap pearl necklace, and sneered.
"I suppose you won't be generous enough to give it to me for free."
Luca's expression changed, and he looked at Kane somewhat timidly. "Yes, sir, you know my situation. This pearl necklace is indeed still valuable. If you could give me some money, that would be great."
Kane didn't want to hear Luca's nonsense.
His time wasn't for these lowlifes.
He stood up, hands in his pockets, his tone indifferent. "Bandel, give him some money. I hope I never see you again."
Luca's eyes lit up, and he nodded eagerly. "Yes, yes, yes! Don't worry!"
Kane fingered the pearl necklace in his hand, the corners of his mouth curling up slightly.
He couldn't wait to see cupcake's reaction.
Yes, it would definitely be interesting.
Kane got into the car back to the estate.
The entire estate was already shrouded in night, with only dim warm yellow lights.
He slowly, step by step, walked up the stairs and came to Sonya's door.
