Chapter 91 The Truth
Chapter 91 The Truth
Vitale stepped forward like the space already belonged to him.
No tension in his movement. No hesitation. Just quiet certainty.
His eyes moved between them slowly, almost thoughtfully, as if he had been watching this moment long before they arrived.
“I was wondering how long it would take,” he said.
Alessandro didn’t respond.
Marco didn’t move.
But something in the air had already shifted.
Vitale’s gaze settled on them both, and for a moment, he almost smiled.
“You really never saw it, did you. I did, don't even look for your men Alessandro, they are tied up, I didn't kill them, I am thinking that when this is all over I will need a new army.”
Silence.
“You were too busy fighting each other.”
His tone wasn’t loud. It didn’t need to be.
It carried.
“You built this war yourselves. Fed it. Protected it.” A pause. “And I let you.”
Alessandro’s eyes darkened, but he didn’t interrupt.
Vitale stepped closer.
“You thought you were enemies,” he continued. “That everything that happened between you was personal.” A slight tilt of his head. “It was never about you.”
That landed hard.
Marco’s jaw tightened, but he still said nothing.
Vitale’s attention shifted to him.
“You really believed you were protecting your family,” he said quietly. “That every decision you made was yours.”
A faint smile.
“It wasn’t.”
The words cut deeper than any threat.
“I gave you just enough truth to make the rest believable. A name here. A rumor there. A missing piece you were too proud to question.”
Marco’s breathing changed.
Barely.
But enough.
Vitale looked back at Alessandro.
“And you,” he said. “Always so controlled. So certain. You thought you were reacting to him.”
A pause.
“You were reacting to me.”
Silence.
Heavy now.
Unavoidable.
“I didn’t need to destroy either of you,” Vitale went on. “You were doing that perfectly on your own.” His voice lowered slightly. “All I had to do was guide it.”
Isabella stood still beside Alessandro, her eyes locked on Vitale.
“An empire built on lies never stays standing,” she said.
Vitale looked at her, and for the first time, something colder surfaced in his expression.
“No,” he said. “I built everything on your weakness.”
The words were deliberate. Sharp.
“You loved too easily. Trusted too quickly. And you—” his gaze flicked between the two men “—were too arrogant to see past yourselves.”
Another step forward.
“You were never kings,” Vitale said quietly. “You were tools.”
That was the moment it broke.
Not loudly.
Not visibly.
But completely.
Marco moved first.
Not forward.
Back.
Just slightly.
Like something inside him had finally shifted into place.
“You…” His voice was lower now. Different. “What have you done?”
Vitale laughed.
“I was always there. In every accident. In every loss your families suffered.”
A pause.
“Your father trusted the wrong man, Marco. The night he died… do you know who was with him?”
Silence.
“Me.”
Another pause.
“And do you know who wasn’t there?” His eyes flicked briefly toward Alessandro. “De Luca.”
The truth hit before the mind could protect itself.
Marco’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Realization.
“You killed him.”
Vitale didn’t answer immediately.
Then—
“Yes.”
Silence fell.
Absolute.
And for the first time—
Marco looked at Alessandro.
Not as an enemy.
As someone who had been standing in the same lie.
Vitale continued, his tone almost bored now.
“And you, Alessandro… your young relative all those years ago? Me. Every attempt on your life? Me.” A slight smile. “You were too proud to ever consider you might be wrong.”
The weight of it settled fully now.
Everything.
Every loss.
Every decision.
Built on something false.
“This was never about power,” Vitale said. “It was about control.” His gaze shifted to Isabella. “Everything would have remained perfect if she hadn’t disrupted it.”
His hand moved.
Slow.
Deliberate.
The gun appeared like it had always been there.
And then—
he pointed it at Isabella.
“She should be the first to go,” he said calmly. “Everything that went wrong began with her.”
Time didn’t slow.
It stopped.
Alessandro moved.
Too late.
Marco saw everything in that moment.
All of it.
And for the first time—
he understood.
Not what he had been told.
What he had done.
He stepped forward.
Without thinking.
Without hesitation.
The shot shattered the silence.
Loud. Sharp. Final.
Marco took it.
His body jerked with the impact before dropping to his knees, then to the ground.
Alessandro reached Vitale before the echo faded.
No hesitation.
No second thought.
The gun was in his hand.
One shot.
Clean.
Controlled.
Vitale hit the ground hard.
Alessandro stood over him, gun still raised, making sure he stayed there.
All the control.
All the certainty.
Gone.
The warehouse fell into silence.
No movement.
No voices.
Only breathing—
and something breaking beneath it.
Isabella moved first.
She dropped to her knees beside Marco.
“No…” The word broke out of her as she grabbed him, her hands pressing against the wound. “No, no—stay with me.”
Her control shattered now.
Her voice trembled, her hands shaking as she tried to hold him together.
Marco looked at her.
His breathing uneven.
Fading.
Then his eyes moved.
To Alessandro.
There was no anger left.
No fight.
Only clarity.
“I was wrong,” he said.
The words were weak.
But they carried everything.
Alessandro didn’t move closer. He kept Vitale pinned under his aim.
He didn’t need to step closer.
They understood each other now.
Too late.
But fully.
Marco’s gaze returned to Isabella.
Then softened.
“Take her,” he said. A breath. “Take your family… and walk away.”
His eyes flickered once more between them.
Then—
something in him let go.
Footsteps echoed from the entrance.
Fast. Sharp. Too late.
Marco’s mother stepped inside, surrounded by armed men.
Her presence alone changed the room.
Her eyes moved to Marco on the ground.
To the blood.
To Isabella.
Then—
to Vitale.
Broken.
Alive.
And everything connected at once.
Her expression didn’t break.
It hardened.
Something ancient.
Something final.
She stepped forward slowly.
Her gaze locked on Vitale.
“Vitale is mine now.”
Her voice was low.
Cold.
Possessive.
Behind her—
a baby cried.
Alive.
Waiting.
And in the middle of it all—
everything had ended.
