Chapter 98 Chapter 98
Kael.
(A week later)
Sitting atop a horse, I rode back to the kingdom once again, armed with my 300 men who had trained relentlessly in this short time that was bestowed upon us. During that time, we had picked up a spot for the final confrontation, and I had expected to meet Mortis there. If he didn't show up, however, I was prepared to chase him to the ends of the earth and give him the karma he needed.
We neared the plains where the battle would take place, and from a distance, I could see the large army Mortis had gathered. A tiny smile grew on my face as I looked upon the crowd, my beast growling excitedly in me. It couldn't wait to unleash on our enemies. It had been craving blood since the time we met Mortis weeks ago.
His army stood unyielding, archers poised and ready, tankers with their shields lining the front, thousands of foot soldiers behind him. We moved till we were within earshot, and I reined my horse to a stop, raising my hands in signal. The rest of my men stopped behind me, getting into formation.
"We meet again, Mortis," I said aloud, my voice cutting through the expanse. "Are you ready? Because I am. I promise you, you're not escaping this. I'll make you drop dead and stay under the ground if it's the last thing I do." I threatened, my voice taking on an animalistic edge.
Mortis sneered at me, his eyes narrowing as he leaned forward on his steed, a pompous smile on his lips. "Let's see about that," he boasted, his body tensed.
I clenched my jaw, feeling my beast inch to the surface, fury taking over every part of my being. With a hand raised up, I directed it towards Mortis's army.
"Charge!!" I yelled, my voice thunderous. With a scream, my men moved into battle, with me following closely behind.

(Hours later)
Lord Mortis watched, transfixed, as the king crushed men like mere folks in battle, swinging their dead bodies left and right as he made his way through the vengeful crowd, a chill running down his spine. He'd known the Lycan king was powerful, but this display of power was... downright terrifying.
To think he'd only assumed a half shift, and none could match his speed, strength, and agility was astounding. Absolutely no one was coming close to him to even land a hit, no matter how little. He'd sweep them off their feet, smashing their bodies to the ground with a deafening crack of their bones or decapitate them with a swipe of his claws.
He stiffened as the king caught arrows mid-air, throwing them back with lightning speed, tearing shifted wolves apart from their limbs, blood marring his armor. If he continued at that rate, he would run out of men quickly.
He was still bruised from the last surprise attack of the king and doubted if he would be any match for the king this time around. Without thinking, while cutting down several attacking soldiers, he began to back away.
In that moment, King Kael turned around, holding eye contact with him, and a shudder went through his body. A devilish grin grew on the Lycan King's face, and Mortis became stricken with fear, the air on his neck standing on end.
Get out of here, his mind whispered to him. Let's get out of here!
Lord Mortis turned around and began running, jumping off his horse so he could move faster and blend in with the soldiers around him. His feet hardly touched the ground as he wove through the crowd, desperate to reach safety. He'd barely made it anywhere when he heard the sound of a roar that was suspiciously close, his heart skipped several beats.
Lord Mortis pushed more strength into his legs, his heels almost touching the back of his head as he ran, getting ready to enter a full shift. Must escape, he chanted in his head, not daring to look back. Someone yanked him off his feet and slammed him onto the ground so fast that his breath was knocked out of him. He wasn't surprised to find out it was the king. What's with him and smashing people?
"Where do you think you're going?" he snarled, his eyes a bright yellow as he glared at him, claws digging through steel and into his shoulders. "We haven't even fought yet."
"Get away from me! You despicable monster!" Lord Mortis screamed, struggling in his grip, panic flaring in his system.
King Kael looked taken aback, his brow furrowed slightly. "Now I'm a monster? I don't believe you. Aira thinks I'm beautiful," Kael said like he was discussing the weather.
Lord Mortis allowed himself to be stunned for a moment. He's talking about his mate at a time like this? He winced as the king tightened his hold, sinking his claws deeper into him.
"Well, since you're running away, how about we end this quickly, hmm? I ripped out your father's spine when I fought him, but I'm splitting yours into two. Okay?" He said, cocking his head to side in suggestion. Horror filled Lord Mortis at the gently spoken words.
"No, no! I'm sorry, your majesty! I'm sorry for betraying you!! Please, have mercy!" Lord Mortis cried out in desperation.
King Kael took on a full shift instead. Letting out a powerful roar that frightened the soldiers around him, he raised Lord Mortis high in the air and smashed him onto the ground again.
More bones broke as Lord Mortis let out an ear-splitting cry. He then turned Lord Mortis upside down, grabbing his legs and stretching them far apart. An agonized shriek escaped Lord Mortis's mouth as his bones dislocated, his muscles ripping apart.
Letting out another powerful roar, King Kael forced the soldiers around him into submission, ripping Lord Mortis into two, both parts of his body dangling from his hands, blood splattering on the ground. It was indeed a gruesome way to die.
He then dropped the bodies to the ground, holding onto the head of the already lifeless Lord. The traitor had been killed. King Kael reverted to his male form once more, his gaze sweeping across the shocked soldiers, face hard as steel.
"My name is Kael Drathlor, King and Ruler of the Kingdom of Vadriona, home to all werewolves and Lycans. Contrary to what had been said about me in recent months, I am not dead and buried in the ground."
He brought Lord Mortis's head forward, raising it up for all to see. "This bastard here betrayed me, tried to use my mate, my woman, against me and take the throne." He then let out a chuckle. "But, he didn't know any better. The gods do not make mistakes, you see? My day of misfortune turned out to be my greatest blessing, all thanks to this idiot."
