Chapter 56 The Summit of Sacrifice

Chapter 56 The Summit of Sacrifice
~~SERAPHINE~~

The final stretch of White Mountain was a jagged spine of rock and ice. Wind howled between the peaks, carrying the smell of ozone and ancient power. Each step felt heavier than the last, as if the ley lines themselves were pressing against my chest. The moonstone at my throat burned hotter, its light pulsing in rhythm with my heartbeat.

Andrew walked beside me, silent and focused. His injuries had healed enough for him to move without pain, but the shadow of exhaustion still clung to his face. He kept one hand near the dagger at his belt, the other brushing mine every few steps. A quiet reassurance.

We crested the ridge just as the sun dipped behind the horizon. The summit lay before us: a perfect circle of black stone, cracked and veined with silver. At its center stood a single obelisk, its surface smooth and reflective. The Moonfire had already begun. Thin threads of white flame rose from the cracks in the ground, curling upward like living smoke.

The Umbral waited.

It was not a creature with form. It was a void, a tear in reality, a place where light and matter refused to exist. The darkness pulsed, expanding and contracting, feeding on the moonlight that poured down from the sky.

And standing in front of it was Christina.

She wore a gown of midnight silk, her blonde hair loose and wild. The black crystal from her staff was now embedded in her chest, glowing with an unholy light. Her eyes were no longer green. They were pure black, reflecting nothing.

"You are late," she said, her voice layered with a thousand whispers. "The ritual has already begun."

Andrew stepped forward, placing himself between us. "This ends tonight."

Christina laughed, the sound echoing unnaturally. "It ends when I decide. The Umbral needs a vessel. And your little wolf is perfect."

I felt the shadow inside me surge, recognizing its kin. It clawed at the edges of my mind, trying to break free. I gritted my teeth and pushed back.

"You will not take her," Andrew said, his voice low and lethal.

Christina tilted her head. "You still believe love conquers all? How quaint."

She raised a hand. The Umbral responded, sending a wave of darkness toward Andrew. He raised his arms, the dragon mark on his back igniting in a blaze of blue fire. The two forces collided, light against shadow, and the mountain trembled.

I moved.

I did not think. I simply acted. The moonstone flared, and a surge of pure silver energy burst from my body, wrapping around Andrew like a shield. The darkness recoiled, shrieking.

Christina's eyes widened. "You dare to wield it?"

"I am not wielding it," I said, stepping forward. "I am becoming it."

The moonstone cracked, the silver light pouring out in a torrent. My skin glowed, my veins lit from within. The transformation I had resisted in the clearing now completed itself. I felt my wolf rise, not as a separate entity, but as an extension of myself. I was the White Wolf. And I was still Seraphine.

Andrew looked at me, awe and fear warring in his eyes. "Seraphine…"

"I am still here," I said, my voice echoing with power. "I am not lost."

Christina snarled, raising both hands. The Umbral surged forward, a tidal wave of darkness aimed directly at me.

I met it.

The silver light from my body clashed with the black void, creating a blinding explosion of energy. The mountain shook, rocks tumbling from the peak. I felt the Umbral's hunger, its rage, its ancient, endless hatred. I felt Christina's will behind it, her desperation to claim what she had never earned.

I pushed harder. The silver light grew brighter, hotter, until it was a star in my chest. I felt the Umbral begin to falter, its edges fraying.

But then I felt something else. A sharp, searing pain in my stomach. The baby.

The Umbral had found a new target.

"No!" I screamed, the sound tearing from my throat like a howl.

I stumbled, the silver light flickering. Christina laughed, triumphant.

Andrew roared, the dragon mark blazing with an intensity that rivaled my own. He lunged forward, tackling Christina to the ground. They rolled across the stone, claws and fists flying.

I fell to my knees, clutching my stomach. The pain was excruciating, a violation of the deepest kind. The Umbral was trying to take my child.

I looked up at Andrew, fighting for his life, and at Christina, fighting for her twisted vision of power. I knew what I had to do.

I placed both hands on my stomach, tears streaming down my face. "I will not let you have my child," I whispered. "I will not let you take my family."

I closed my eyes and surrendered.

Not to the darkness. To the light.

I let go of every last shred of resistance. I embraced the White Wolf completely, with no fear, no doubt, no hesitation. The silver light exploded outward, a supernova of pure, unadulterated power.

The Umbral shrieked, a sound of pure agony. It tried to retreat, but the light was everywhere, inescapable. It burned away the darkness, layer by layer, until nothing remained but a fading wisp of smoke.

Christina screamed as the light consumed her. Her body dissolved into ash, the black crystal shattering into dust.

The mountain fell silent.

I collapsed, the silver light fading. The pain in my stomach receded, replaced by a gentle warmth. The baby was safe.

Andrew crawled to me, his face streaked with blood and tears. He pulled me into his arms, holding me as if I were the most precious thing in the world.

"You did it," he whispered. "You saved us."

I looked up at him, exhausted but whole. "We did it. Together."

The moon reached its zenith, bathing the summit in pure silver light. The ritual was complete. The curse was gone. The entity was destroyed.

But as I rested in Andrew's arms, I felt a new sensation. A faint, distant pulse, like a heartbeat from far away.

And in the back of my mind, I heard a whisper, soft and insidious.

You destroyed the child. But you did not destroy the mother.

I looked at Andrew, my heart pounding. "Did you hear that?"

He frowned. "Hear what?"

The whisper came again, closer this time.

We are not done, White Wolf. We are only beginning.

I felt the baby kick, a strong, healthy movement. But beneath that warmth, something else stirred. Something that was not mine.

Something that had been waiting.

And I knew, with a certainty that chilled me to the bone, that the battle was far from over.
