Chapter 60 THE COST OF BORROWED POWER
Chapter 60 THE COST OF BORROWED POWER
THE COST OF BORROWED POWER
KAELIA'S POV
We were fortunate to have made it out alive. Seraphine had served as a temporary distraction while we got away from Drakoria. I didn't know who I should have been furious at aside from Seraphine; Kael for not stabbing Azrath hard enough with the Heartpiercer or Azrath for not dying and having enough strength to protect Seraphine.
I struggled to suppress my emotions as we returned immediately to Nikolas. Only if I could go back to Drakoria and finish things off by myself. But going back to Drakoria without any fail proof plan will be a suicide mission. Now was not the time for me to die. Not after I have taken over Drakoria as ruler and had my fair share of ultimate power.
We were met by an infuriated Fae when we reached. His reaction to seeing us was surprising.
"What are you two doing in my domain?!" He shot out at us, blocking our paths.
"What do you mean, Nikolas?" Kael shot back. The dust and heat from the battle was still rolling off him in waves. He was bloodied all over and so was I.
"You cannot deny us entry, Fae. Not after the ritual didn't work."
"The ritual didn't work..." He repeated, like a statement, not a question, "I told you that the chances of the ritual working weren't certain."
Kael's eyes were blazing red. He reached out and grabbed Nikolas by his cloak and drew him closer.
"Listen to me, Fae." Kael said through clenched teeth, "We had hopes in that ritual, Nikolas. Our victory depended on that ritual. You obviously didn't do it right because we lost the battle."
"Get your hands off of me, Dragon." Nikolas didn't seem like he was perturbed by the state Kael held him in.
"Why didn't you do the ritual right, we assured us, and we could have died you know." I yelled at Nikolas.
His eyes darted towards me for a moment before they settled back on Kael.
"Even if you won the battle. What do I stand to gain from it?" Nikolas said.
Kael's eyes widened as he let go of Nikolas. "So this is what it's about, hunh? What do you stand to gain from our victory?!"
Nikolas didn't flinch. Even if Kael tried to hurt him, there was not much that he could do, Nikolas was powerful and what was more scary was that Nikolas was concealing some of his powers from us.
"Your Fae magic is useless. I never should have wasted my time coming here. The Heartpiercer you gave to me—worthless." Kael spat out in anger.
"I stabbed Azrath with it but he still kept fighting. Even when he was injured, he killed off almost all of my men."
Nikolas burst out into a loud laughter. Kael and l exchanged puzzled glances. Irritation swirled inside my stomach.
I looked around for any heavy weapon I could use on Nikolas. It would have little effect on him because of his powers, regardless, my attack on him would subside the anger inside of me.
"I doubt your dragon king is still alive. Don't ever doubt the efficiency of the Heartpiercer."
"Your dragon king would be dead in no time, I assure you."
"And if he survives?" I shot the question at him.
"Then it is your cross to carry. I have played my part nu helping you, even when I stand to gain nothing."
"I was never compensated. I was never...."
This time, I grabbed him by the neck and pushed him against a wall, raising him up slightly.
Anger was burning every organ inside of me. I could barely even control it at this point.
"How dumb do you think dragons are?!" K asked in a low and dangerous tone. I kept myself back from sinking my claws into his fragile skin.
"Do you think we do not know the consequences of coming to you for help?" I asked again, he didn't answer and instead wrapped his fingers around my hand, trying to break free.
"A part of whoever you help always goes out of them, so technically, you have some of our powers, isn't that right, Nikolas."
Something flickered in his gaze. Fear. He didn't know anyone would find out about his tactics.
I let go of him.
"You will redo that ritual, Nikolas. Whether you want to do it or not."
"As long as Azrath is still alive, victory is still a long way from being won."
Nikolas seemed adamant. It was obvious from his body language that he didn't want to work for or with us anymore.
If only there was a way for me to bind him to me just like I did Ezekiel. If only there was a way to get him to conform to my every command.
The only way out was to threaten and bully him. Killing him was out of the options.
"For your own good, stay away from more rituals. I have been lenient with both of you enough. It's time for you both to get out."
The audacity of this...
I froze. What the hell was that sound?!
A crack in the earth followed immediately after those words. Another sound came, sounding like a low growl before it began to get louder and louder.
Nikolas began walking away confidently from us.
The sound continued getting louder. It sounded like something was awakening.
"We cannot let him get away from us. We need that ritual." I said and was about to go after him when I felt a cold hand on my wrist.
Kael held me back, his eyes still on Nikolas' disappearing back. His teeth were still clenched in anger.
"There is no need to go after him. You hear that sound, don't you?" He asked.
I withdrew my hand from his hold, nodding my head once.
"If he senses that we want to kill him, he won't hesitate to call up dead gods to fight us. We won't survive it."
"He has the power to do that." I said, more to myself than Kael.
My lips curved upward into a smile.
