Chapter 53 The Breaking Point
CHAPTER 53: The Breaking Point
Aric's POV
The roaring of the crowd faded into a dull, distant hum the moment my lips touched hers.
Seraphine’s lips were cracked and dry but she was alive. She was right here in my arms. I cupped her bruised cheek with my trembling hand, terrified that if I let go, she would vanish back into the nightmare Vespera had built for her.
Her body stiffened in shock at first and her breath catching sharply in her throat. For a second, I thought she would pull away from me. I feared the lies she had been fed in that dark cave had broken whatever love she held for me.
But then, a soft, broken sob escaped her.
She leaned into me. Her weight collapsing entirely against my chest as her tears began to flow, hot and silent against my skin. Her fingers trembling, clawed weakly at the torn fabric of my shirt.
She was holding on for dear life. In that single, fragile reaction, I knew she understood I hadn’t ordered her torture.
I deepened the kiss. Angling my head to press harder against her lips.
By holding her like this on the royal balcony, I was stripped bare before my people. I was telling every single Lycan looking up at us that this human woman was mine. No matter what the consequences might be.
When I finally pulled back, she whispered.
"Aric," her voice a ragged, breathless scrape.
"I have you," I murmured back against her lips.
My thumb gently wiped away a tear that had traced a path through the dirt on her cheek. "I’m not letting go."
Then, the world crashed back in with the force of a tidal wave.
The hundreds of Lycans gathered below erupted into a frenzy of snarling mouths and glowing angry eyes.
"Disgrace!" a massive Alpha near the front gates bellowed.
His face twisted with pure rage as he pointed a clawed finger up at us. "He has disgraced the throne for a human!"
"She is a curse!" a woman screamed from the center of the crowd.
"Execute her! Bring her down and execute the human spy before she destroys us all!"
"Where is Lady Vespera?" another voice shouted, rallying the people around him.
"He betrays centuries of Lycan tradition! He rejects our bloodlines for a piece of human trash!"
I felt Seraphine flinch violently against me. I didn’t waste another second and stepped directly in front of her.
My broad shoulders completely blocked her from their view. I laced my fingers tightly through her cold hand, locking our grips together.
My own wolf clawed at the surface. It was desperate to rip through my skin and tear apart anyone who dared threaten my mate.
I saw my personal guard standing along the lower courtyard. Some of the older soldiers, men who had served my father and secretly distrusted Vespera’s growing power, remained silent.
I filled my lungs and let out a deafening roar that echoed off the palace walls. A true King's command that temporarily choked the breath out of the crowd. The shouting died down to a tense, vibrating murmur.
"Listen to me!" my voice boomed, carrying across every inch of the stone square.
"Seraphine is under my protection! She is innocent of the lies told about her. Anyone who wishes to harm her will answer to me personally, with their blood!"
A collective snarl rose from the back of the crowd but I pressed on, narrowing my eyes.
"Lady Vespera is a traitor to the crown!" I announced.
"She has committed unforgivable crimes against this kingdom using my name to cover her cruelty. At this moment, Vespera is a fugitive and she will face a traitor's death!"
For a second, I thought the truth might make them pause. I thought the horror of what Vespera had done would clear the red haze from their eyes. I was wrong.
"Lies!" a voice shouted from the front line.
"He’s been bewitched!" another man yelled, and within seconds, the chant caught fire.
"The human has bewitched our King! She’s used foul magic to turn him against his own blood!"
"We don't believe you!" a young warrior screamed.
"Where is the proof? You banished your true mate for a lying human whore!"
Near the grand fountain in the center of the square, my eyes caught a small group of people who weren't shouting. It was Elder Thomas and two of his closest peers.
They stood perfectly still in their long, traditional robes, their faces dark and calculating.
They didn't join in the wild screaming. As I watched them, Thomas leaned over and whispered something into the ear of the elder next to him. They exchanged a subtle, grim glance.
They weren't trying to stop the riot. They were letting it happen.
In fact, I could see the cruel satisfaction in Thomas's eyes, he realized that the public's outrage was the perfect weapon to strip the crown right from my head.
Thomas raised his hand slightly, giving a sharp, discreet signal to a trusted, dark-cloaked follower standing in the shadows of the alleyway.
The follower gave a quick nod. Slipped away into the dark streets, disappearing into the city. They were already moving, setting hidden plans into motion while the square burned with anger.
"Aric..."
A tug on my hand pulled my attention back. I didn't turn around fully, keeping my eyes locked on the hostile crowd.
"Aric, please," Seraphine whispered.
Her voice cracked with a heavy agonizing weight. "Let me go. You have to let me go."
"Never," I growled softly, the word final and absolute.
"Look at them," she sobbed, her body trembling so hard.
"They hate me. They are going to destroy everything you’ve built. You are the King, Aric. You have a whole pack to protect. Please, don't lose your throne and your life for me."
Hearing those words broke something inside me. After all she had suffered in that cave and all she had suffered in the past, her first thought was still about saving me from my own people.
"Shut up, Seraphine," I commanded.
My voice thick with a mixture of fierce love and raw fury, though I kept my tone gentle just for her.
"You are worth more than the throne. You are worth more than this entire kingdom. I abandoned you once because I was blind. I am never, ever doing it again. We stand together or we fall together. Do you understand me?"
She didn't answer with words. I felt her step closer, her chest pressing against my back as she let out a shaky, surrendered breath.
Behind me, Lyrin stepped up to the edge of the balcony. Her sharp eyes scanned the crowd below and her face was incredibly grim.
She leaned over to Beta Caspian. His hand gripped tightly on the hilt of his sword, his eyes fixed on the palace gates.
"Caspian," Lyrin said her voice dropping to a tense, quiet whisper.
"Look at the western side of the square. Do you see those three Alphas in the leather jackets?"
Caspian shifted his gaze slightly, his brow furrowing. "I see them. They're shouting with the rest."
"No, they aren't just shouting," Lyrin countered, her voice tight with alarm.
"They're directing it. Every time the noise starts to die down, one of them starts a new chant. Look at the outer circle. Those men are deliberately pushing the crowd forward, forcing the weaker pack members toward our guards. This isn't a spontaneous protest anymore, Caspian. This is a staged execution. Someone prepared the crowd for this before Seraphine even walked through those doors."
Caspian’s face drained of color, his grip tightening on his sword "If the elders are behind this, we don't have enough loyal guards inside the palace walls to hold off the entire city."
"Then we need to get Aric and Seraphine inside right now," Lyrin urged, reaching out to grab my shoulder. "Aric, we have to move. The atmosphere is shifting, they are getting ready to—"
Before she could finish her sentence, a sharp, whistling sound sliced through the air.
My Lycan reflexes kicked in a fraction of a second too late. A large, jagged stone flew through the air, launched with deadly force from within the crowd.
It sailed past my shoulder, missing Seraphine’s head by mere inches and smashed violently against the elegant stained-glass palace wall directly behind us.
The glass shattered, raining sharp, glittering shards onto the balcony floor.
Seraphine gasped and flinched away from the sound.
Any lingering thread of respect, restraint, or fear of the royal bloodline evaporated from the crowd in an instant.
"Death to the human!" a voice screamed from the front.
"Take the balcony!" another roared.
Suddenly, the air was filled with a barrage of flying objects. Dozens of heavy stones, broken pieces of wooden market stalls and iron debris were hurled toward the balcony.
Caspian and Lyrin drew their weapons to deflect the largest pieces.
Down below, the thin line of palace guards guarding the lower courtyard completely buckled under the weight of the mob.
The furious citizens surged forward like a tidal wave, their claws unsheathing and their eyes glowing wild in the dimming light.
"Get back! Inside, now!" Caspian yelled, throwing his body in front of us. A heavy piece of timber smashed against the stone railing, sending rock splinters flying everywhere.
I scooped Seraphine up into my arms, wrapping my body entirely around her to shield her from the flying debris.
She buried her face in my neck, her hands locking around my collar as I kicked the shattered balcony doors open and stumbled back into the safety of the throne room.
Lyrin and Caspian slammed the doors shut behind us. Threw the thick iron bolt into place just as three heavy stones slammed against the exterior wood.
But the danger wasn't on the balcony anymore.
From the front of the palace, a massive, terrifying sound reverberated through the stone floor beneath our feet. It was the sound of hundreds of bodies throwing themselves against the main defense lines.
The massive, reinforced palace gates down in the lower courtyard began to groan. The iron hinges shrieking under immense pressure.
Outside, above the roar of the wind and the crashing of stones. A single, booming voice rose above the madness, filled with a primal, bloodthirsty hunger that demanded violence.
"Break the gates! Bring us the human!“
