Chapter 338 Pregnancy Test

“It's nothing, My Queen. I couldn't sleep either way so this just gives me something to do.”
“Perfect..I just have a question to ask you. I've been doing some digging recently and I've found out a few things. Also, a few things have happened.”
She seemed comfortable, straight like she had nothing to hide. Or maybe she was just good at doing so.
“We finally found Lucy's phone and according to the records, it shows you called her the day she was killed. Did you forget to mention that or did you intentionally leave that out?”
Her strong gaze faltered and for the first time since tonight, she looked at the walls.
“It seems I forgot to mention it.”
“Sandy, I'm sure you know that whether you tell me or not, I will find it out myself. With or without your help. I just called you here as a formality or would you rather I began to see you as a suspect?”
“No! Don't do that..I have nothing to hide. I would never do anything to harm Mrs Lucy.”
Then I guess we were on the same track.
“That means you're willing to tell me why you called Lucy that morning.”
Seeing that she was at a crossroads, she sighed.
“No one was supposed to know about this except Mrs Lucy, me and the doctor. No one knew about it either. Not even her husband.”
It seemed like the words that wanted to come out of her mouth were so heavy that she couldn't say.
“Forgive me, Mrs Lucy. She had a miscarriage some years back. She was poisoned and the baby died. She was scared to get pregnant again but she wanted a baby so bad. She didn't want to take the risk so she came to me and asked me to carry the baby. I have kids of my own so carrying the baby wouldn't have been an issue for me. But I could see how much a pregnancy would mean to her so when she took me to the doctor, I told him not to do anything. The egg and the sperm were ready but I told him that Mrs Lucy would rather carry the baby. The doctor seemed to be her friend and he knew how much she wanted it. Mrs Lucy never knew about it. When she came for a check up, that's when he put the egg in her. We knew we could go to jail for it but she meant a lot to me. So I didn't care.”
So the calendar that I had seen at Lucy's house hadn't been for her pregnancy. It shd been for the pregnancy she thought Sandy was carrying for her.
“Didnt she suspect that something was going on? I mean, your bump wasn't growing but hers was, right?”
She smiled but it didn't reach her eyes.
“The first time, the IVF treatment didn't work. We had to try five times before it worked. So she didn't have a bump exactly. I told her that all my pay pregnancies have been like that. My body just didn't grow a bump until my last trimester which was actually true. When she came to me complaining that she was noticing some changes and she thinks she's falling sick, I asked her to go to the doctor to get checked. I made sure to go with her. The doctor told her that she was under stress and she had the flu. It wasn't until that day that he called me and told me that the treatment had worked. She was pregnant.”
This would have seemed so fake if I hadn't heard it from Sandy herself. I didn't know that anyone could go this length for someone else.
The fact that both Sandy and the doctor knew that they could go to jail for this this but yet, they didn't mind at all. As long as Lucy had gotten pregnant in the end, that was the goal.
Lucy being the kind of person that I think she was, I don't think she would have wanted to abort the baby no matter what. She may not exactly appreciate the procedure used but in the end, she would have been very happy that she had a child to call her own.
“So, the call that day was to tell her that the treatment had worked? What did she say?”
“I never got to tell her. Someone walked in and I didn't want them to hear what I wanted to say so I ended the call immediately. I sent her a text instead and told her that I was so sorry and that I would explain everything to her that day. She asked me to come to the cabin.”
“Sandy, did you go to the cabin?”
She shook her head.
“I couldn't. Clients came in and I had to handle them. I told her that I would go later that evening.”
So Lucy was pregnant.
“You say you told her about the pregnancy. What did she say?”
“She immediately said that she knew what we had been doing all along. And that she just took a pregnancy test. She even sent me a picture.”
She brought out her phone and showed it to us.
Hazel took the phone from her.
“So you're saying she wasn't mad at all?”
”No, you can read all the texts. She was grateful and asked me to come over. I still needed to apologize for doing all that behind her back. She trusted me.”
A pregnancy test.
“Hazel, pass the case files. There's something I need to check.”
She handed it over to me and I looked through it. Even though right now, I couldn't trust the evidence that was logged in here because of the flimsy police work that had been done, it was the only thing I could hold on to.
On the kitchen counter, they had found a plastic container of a pregnancy test but not the stick itself.
