Chapter 56 Chapter 56
Chapter 56
\- James -
When I entered the room, I did not immediately notice Veronica's mood till I tried having a conversation with her, and she kept giving me cold replies.
"You good?" I asked as I changed my clothes
"I am," she said simply
"Have you eaten yet," I asked.
"No."
"Why not?" I asked again, still taking off my clothes.
"Nothing."
I paused. That was when I realised something was off.
I turned to look at her and met an unsmiling face
"Are you okay?" I asked again, this time with more concern.
"I said I am," she replied and I sighed. I walked closer to her on the bed.
"Well I can see that you are not," I said softly. "Do you mind telling me what the problem is darling? Did anyone upset you?"
"Yes, you," she said.
"Me? What did I do?" I wondered aloud.
"James, I don't really know how to say this, but I feel like a lot has changed since I returned to the pack. And what is more frustrating is the fact that I can't even place my hands on what is wrong. But I feel it deep within me that things have really changed."
"Come on Veronica," I said. "What are you talking about? I have not changed. My love for you has not changed. What makes you think that?"
She sighed deeply.
"I just feel alone in a way I don't even understand. Even though I know you're my mate and that...you love me I still can't help feeling something is wrong."
"Listen to me sweetheart," I bent on one knee to her side and touched her thighs gently. "I love you dearly and nothing can change that. Stop feeling that way. I am right here."
"I know you are the beta and you take charge of many pack duties," she said, her voice low. "But you are not just a Beta to me. You are my man, the one I love. I cannot help feeling your duties are taking you away from me."
I looked down for a while, finally understanding where this is coming from
"I totally understand you my love," I said softly, massaging her thighs. "My duties to the pack will not take away my love for you. I assure you that."
"Look at you, James," she said tearfully. "We should have been planning our wedding but I don't even understand what is going on. You are not available even for a man who's going to be a groom."
"I am so sorry. Look I take a break now to be fully available for our marriage preparations. And I will be by your side."
She pushed my hands gently away and stood up, walked to the window and wrapped her arms around herself, still looking upset.
"Darling, I said I will not leave your side anymore in the coming days," I assured her. "Don't worry please."
"There's something about the Luna," she said and my heart skipped a beat.
I stood up and walked towards her
"What about her? Did she say anything to you?" I asked.
"She seems to always want you by her side," Veronica said. "And I cannot understand it. Your duty is to report directly to the alpha and not to his wife. But I have seen you more around her and I am just wondering."
"Veronica... What are you saying?" I asked cautiously as I watched her face. Has she found out something?
I hope not. I really hope not. I love Veronica so much that I cannot afford to lose her because of this
"Talk to me Darling," I nudged when she didn't say anything.
"I am just wondering, James. I don't know. I really don't know but I just don't feel alright about it. She's got her man, the King. She should ask him if she needs anything, not you. You don't owe her that kind of closure. You are the Beta, not her friend."
"I can assure you my relationship with the Luna is not based on any friendships," I told her and felt my tongue go bitter.
It was not entirely a lie though. Everything happening between Sophie and me was not based on any feelings.
Even the sex. At least for me. But anyone who hears it will never believe that.
No matter what I felt it was, Veronica would be shattered to know I was having such relationships with Sophie.
The King would have my head. A beta with the wife of the Alpha?
I touched Veronica's shoulder and turned her around to face me.
"You don't let all of these things disturb you," I said. "What is more important is that I love you, and we will be together forever. You will be the mother of my children."
I held her chin up and kissed her lips.
"I love you so much, Veronica. And you know this."
I opened my eyes and looked at her.
Her eyes closed while she leaned into me.
"Say you love me," I muttered and she smiled.
"I love you she said."
We held each other in a quiet embrace for a while before a knock on the door interrupted the moment.
We didn't move at first till the second came and I was wondering who it could be.
"James, the Luna sends for you," a voice came through.
Veronica's face fell into a frown. Before I could say anything she pushed me away and walked to the bed.
The Knock came again and I felt irritated.
"Give me a while," I said loud enough for whoever was there. Sophie had to send for me at a time like this just when I was able to calm Veronica. What does she even want from me?
I was mad and I decided I was going to tell her. She needs to know when it is the right time to act in a certain way.
I looked at Veronica, who had her back against me, and put back my cloak, then headed for the door.
