Chapter 40 Chapter 40
Chapter 40
\- Sophie -
The annual Alpha's meeting did not quite go as planned for me
With the other Alphas and Luna who admired and congratulated me it was what I had expected
But with Jason...
He almost made me lose my stance and I tried to avoid him all along
There was something about him. It seemed like he knew something we didn't
And then he said he knew I was faking the pregnancy
I wanted to believe he was just saying it to get at me, but it was with so much conviction on his face that I feared he might actually know
I didn't expect to get it easy with him because of everything that had happened between his brother and me but I did not expect it to be something I could not handle
It seems so to me now. And with everything he had said I hoped it did not get Marcus questioning
Marcus did not quite seem bothered by Jason's words, though. But I was
I knew I had to be on my toes as I don't know what he might be up to
We returned to the pack after the summit
And that Veronica girl was waiting in the palace for us
She immediately rushed into James' arms as soon as we alighted from the ride
I eyed them as they held each other in a tight embrace
I cleared my throat as I stood close to them and they disentangled
"Luna welcome back home," Veronica greeted. "How was your trip?"
I barely regarded her as I turned to James
"Can I have a word with you?" I said to him. They looked at each other and then back at me
I had no time for that. I walked ahead, certain that James was going to come after me and he sure did
"Sophie, what is this?" he asked as soon as we were out of sight. "We just returned from a trip now, and I need some time with my woman."
I glared at him
"I have something more important we need to discuss," I said and he ran his hand through his hair
"Seriously? Something more important that cannot wait?"
"Yes!" I snapped and he sighed
"Fine. What is it?"
I paced around slowly
"After we found out Doctor Mills helped Aria escape," I began. "And the Alpha ordered a search crew, are you sure you checked everywhere possible?"
His face was drawn with confusion
"I don't understand Sophie," he said. "Why are you bringing this up now?"
"I want to be sure James. I need to be sure," I told him. Ever since the summit, I began to have an unsettling feeling of Aria lurking somewhere, pregnant with Marcus's heir.
After all, there is no news of what must have actually happened to her. Whether she is dead or alive, and I need to know
"We couldn't find her anywhere," James said. "You know we searched thoroughly."
"I know James," I said. "But you don't have an answer to whether she is alive somewhere or dead."
"It is not possible she survived out there..."
"Assumptions," I cut in.
"Yes, but statistics and probability are higher that she might not have survived."
"No certainty. Because we cannot tell for sure," I maintained and he sighed
"Okay fine, so what exactly are you saying now?"
"I need you to find true answers for me," I said, looking him in the eyes. "I need to know what exactly became of her. Find out. And I need just two answers, dead or alive."
"Come on Sophie, that is already a deadbeat. Do you know what it will take for me to find that out? That is a lot of work and it's going to be stressful. I have other duties to tend to."
"Do whatever you can. Appoint men capable of doing work like this and pay them heavily. Money is not a problem. Whatever they do, find answers for me. Let them search everywhere and every single pack. Leave no stone unturned."
"Then what next?" He asked
"When you can find out I will tell you what to do next," I told him. "But I cannot afford to sit back and relax when there is even a slim chance of Aria surviving out there with the Alpha's child."
"Alright," he said. "Will do. Can I go now?"
"Not so fast. There is one more thing?"
"Okay?" He looked impatient. "What is that?"
"Get the doctor ready. We need to move to our next phase of the plan."
"Which is?" He raised a brow questioningly. I took my time before answering
"A miscarriage."
James blinked at me as if he did not hear what I said
"What?"
"You heard me," I was sure he did
"You want to plan a miscarriage?"
"So you did hear."
"I wanted to be sure I heard you right. Sophie are you crazy?"
"You'd better mind your tone," I frowned at him. "And get that doctor to prepare. That is what we need to do next."
"But...gosh, Sophie, I don't even understand how you think. What's going to happen after the miscarriage then? Don't you think Marcus is going to get suspicious? That is a bit risky if you ask me."
"It's simple. I'll convince him that I'll get pregnant again. After all, he believed I had been pregnant before. The miscarriage is going to buy us time."
He thought about it for a while
"And then? Are you going to keep having miscarriages to hold him down? You know that is not going to work right?"
"I have other plans James. For now, just do as I say."
"Fine then." He made to leave but turned back again. "Wait a minute, I am supposed to be planning my wedding with Veronica."
"And?" I looked at him irritably
"And this miscarriage thing is going to ruin it. Can you wait till after the wedding?"
"You had better postpone that wedding," I said sternly. "You have all the time in the world to plan a wedding, but I don't have time on my side."
