Chapter 38 Chapter 38
Chapter 38
\- Aria -
For years, I have lived in the shadows, low and quiet, allowing others determine my fate for me
Even when Marcus mated me and made me Luna, I remained simple and humble
I did think that status or power should control how a man thinks or behaves
Truly, I was not really bothered about the position
All I wanted was to love Marcus and be with him. Hopefully carry his child
I never desire anything more than having a little family I loved and cherished that will love me back
A husband and a kid or two. I played the perfect Luna, or at least that was what I thought it was
But looking back at where it had all gotten me to, I realised my definition of good was not relevant here, or anywhere at all
I do not have to be as evil minded as Sophie, who lied against me and almost cost me my life so she could be queen
Or have to be like Natasha who put little schemes to get at me
But enough is enough
I will not allow this anymore
And that was when I made the request. Alpha Jason had decided to give me a chance. If I sit on it, I will not last any longer than before
In his absence, the royal sceptre was the only thing close to his authority that could help me keep things in control
So I asked for it, instinctively. I never thought it would come by easily for him to give me
But he did. And it was as if I knew, the palace was in havoc almost immediately as he left the pack for the annual meeting
All the maids abandoned their duties and hung around, everyone doing what they wanted to
When I approached a group of them, no one even looked in my direction
"What is going on here?" I asked. "Is this any way to behave while the Alpha is away?"
Not even a flinch. I smiled to myself. I had prepared for this
"Return to your duties at once," I ordered, but calmly.
They stopped talking as if they just got interrupted and were only aware of my presence now
"Did you hear something?" One of the maids said, her face scrunched in mock confusion.
"No I don't hear nor see anything," another said and they bursted into a fist of laughter
"I am sure you heard me," I remained calm. "Return to your duties now or..."
"Or what?" Sarah, the maid who seemed to be the team head shot at me. The same one who had spoken arrogantly to me in the kitchen the other day. "Who the hell do you think you are? This raggedy thing needs to be put in her place. The fact that the Alpha brought you out of whatever hole you came from and gave you some certain privileges does not mean you should forget your place here. You are and will always be an outcast, unwelcomed to the pack. Even the Alpha does not really regard you, he is only tolerating you. What makes you thing we'd take orders from you?"
"It does not matter where I come from. But one thing we both can relate to is that despite that, the Alpha chose me. I am the Luna, your Luna...."
Another fist of laughter
"An empty title, that is the only thing you hold on to. And the one who gave you that title is not even here. Whatever we chose to do against you, not even the elders would care. You have no authority here."
I smiled at her, my confidence unwavering
"I will pardon your ignorance and this one time. But one more word from you, and I will have that tongue sliced out for you," I said looking her straight in the eyes
She stepped back, my statement cracking something.
She looked genuinely confused now, perhaps not expecting my reaction.
Then she quickly braced herself again and opened her mouth to speak
"Hey..." I quickly shushed her, holding her finger up to her face. I deliberately lifted the one with the scepter, the ring sitting round my finger like a throne carefully crafted for it
A light gasp escaped the room and everyone scrambled to their feet
"Careful now," I said. "Don't be in a hurry to speak after my warning. I have given too many graces I doubt I want to give another, unless of course you do not value your tongue."
I enjoyed the looks on their faces for a moment, shock, disbelief and fear. I loved it all
"What was I saying?" I grinned lightly. "Oh yes, I remember. It is very unwise of you to behave so unruly in the absence of your King. This does not speak well of you. I wonder what the King would do if he finds out about this."
The hurriedly mumbled apologies, their heads bowed. It felt good. Oh it felt so good.
Just a few days ago, they held Natasha with that much esteem as she spoke to them. And she is not Luna. This is exactly what I deserve and more, not the ridicule everyone in this pack had graciously served me since I came here.
"Return to you duties at once, and I might consider sparing you," I said and they all scurried away
Not long after, some of the elders Alpha Jason had left behind came to the palace and tried to harass me
I could only thank the goddess I had this coming
I put them in their place. The same look of shock was passed round, they did not expect the royal sceptre to be in my possession
I wondered what would have been of me, if I had not had the balls to ask for that almighty ring?
Now it was with that same look of shock and disbelief on her face, that Natasha looked at me when she noticed the scepter
