Chapter 20

Two weeks had once again passed, no letters, no phone calls from Jake. Sophie once again began to worry. Worried that what she had said to him had hurt him, she really had not meant for her answer to come out that way, she should have just accepted his proposal and got on with her life. He may have called her by now if she had. At this point she had so much to tell him, she wanted to write and tell him but figured why, he would not answer her if he had given up on them. What have I done? She began to cry, and kept saying over and over please call me Jake, if we are meant to be you will call me. Once again her thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door.

“Jewel, really, what are you doing here? Are you crazy, you are drunk, and it is late? Did you and Josh have another fight?” No wonder if you did. The way you run around on him. Then again I guess you do have a good reason to do it.

“Um, no Josh and I did not have another fight. Now would you like to explain why you did not answer the phone, and why you are crying? Last time we talked you seemed to have it all together. What happened?”

“It is a long story; I just wish that Jake would call me.”

“You have not heard from him again? Then this may cheer up. I have a surprise for you, but you have to go back into the living room, sit on the couch and close your eyes. You are going to love this one.”

“Jewel come on I know you when you are drunk, you tend to have some pretty rotten surprises, and I am not in the mood for this. I had a rough time at work, one of my best workers quit on me, now I have to hire someone to take their place, and god only knows good workers are hard as hell to find. Jake has not called me in two weeks, just tell me.”

“No, I am not going to tell you anything unless you do what I asked you to do.”

“Okay, okay I am going, now will you just get on with this. I really am not in the mood for no damn games.”

“Really Sophie, dry up the tears and smile, this surprise is guaranteed to pick you up.”

“I am smiling, even though it is not easy right now. Now will you just tell me?”

Jewel followed Sophie into the living room, waiting for her to say something about the dozen of red roses setting on the coffee table in front of her.

“Jewel, that is really nice of you to bring those to cheer me up, but at this point, nothing is going to do it except a call from Jake or a letter, or if I win the lottery.”

“Really Sophie, are you serious? Why the hell would I buy you flowers? Who the hell do you think they are from? Why don’t you venture a guess at reading the card?

Sophie took the card from the vase and began to read: I love you, have you made a decision yet? Love Jake.

“Oh my God, you are serious; you have not talked to him lately.” I guess you are a stupid woman, he calls very little, writes very little, yet you still are waiting around for him. When will you realize that he does not love you? He is just using you, setting you up for a fall, just the same way that your family seems to be with me.

“No Jewel I have not, he said he did try to call me this week, but he has not, he has not even written to me. So Jewel, have you talked to him lately? You know I do not trust the relationship that you two have. Just like I do not trust the whole relationship you have with my other brother. You two are to close and never used to be. He has even left his bitch, the one none of us like. What is u there? Are you comparing the two?”

“Seriously Sophie, do you think I am messing with your other brother while Josh is at work?” Damn him, he promised not to say anything to her or to anyone else, we are really trying to keep this whole issue on the sly. Shit I need to talk to him. “I have to say I did talk to Jake, as a matter of fact about five minutes ago.”

“Okay Jewel I have to say this, just because you are a dancer and you love to dance the poles, and lap dance for money, that does not mean that every man wants you. But hey, we are talking about Jake not your damn infidelities. Why does he call you so much, and does not call me?”

Now I wish I had just waited until morning to do this for her. Rude ass bitch, she needs to keep her comments to herself about what I do and the relationship I have with her brothers, and my cousin. After all we all know I admitted that I married the wrong brother and the right brother has made it clear how he feels. “Well, lose the attitude, I am leaving anyway, but just ask Jake himself why he has not called.” Jewel went to the front door and let Jake in. “Okay Jewel quit with the games, I cannot call him, and you know that. There is no way he is here, he is not supposed to be here for a few more months yet.”

“Fine do not believe me, I do not care, here look for you. Here he comes.”

“Oh my god, Jake is that really you? What are you doing here? You had said that you would not be here until June. How did you know that I needed you? I have been going crazy since you have not called me, or even written to me, of course my mind went straight to the fact that we were over, and you were angry with me. I really thought that you gave up on us.”

“For one thing you are way too hard to just forget or give up on. So no I did not give up on us. Jewel would not let me call you to tell you I was coming home early; she wanted me to surprise you.” Hell I needed to surprise you, just to make sure that you had not been lying to me that you and Alex were over, I was so hoping to catch you up, I really did need to find a way out, but my boys need this I have come this far with this plan of mine there is no stopping me now. “Jewel has known for a few weeks now that I would be home. I actually managed to pull a hardship out of my ass, I told them that I had a family emergency, not a lie, we are going to be family, and it sounded like you needed me so here I am. I came home to be with you.”

“Jewel, you are such a bitch, why didn’t you let him tell me? You know damn well I would not have been so depressed and going insane. You, Jake need to get over here and give me a hug. I am so happy to see you. Wait are you still going to be able to come back home in June? This will not mess that up right?”

“Yes, I will still be able to come home in June, this will not reflect that at all, but I can only stay for three days this time. We have to make the most of the time we have together.” Ugh, this is going to be the hardest thing to do. I have to pretend to really love this fat ass bitch, just to get her to marry me so I have a house and can get my kids. This really sucks.

“Excuse me, you two, it is late, I do have a husband at home waiting for me. I really need to get back home. Are you staying here Jake, or going back to your mom’s?” Ha like I really care if I get home to Josh, he is a pain in my ass, but I can go spend a few with Brock before I go home.

“That Jewel is a stupid thing to ask. What do you think he is planning to do? Of course he is staying here, I will not let him leave, and I want him here with me.”

“Alright, then I am out of here. Do not make too much noise; you do not want to wake the kids up. As a matter of fact do not have too much fun. Call me tomorrow, one of you at least or no better yet three days from now you can call me.”

“Do not worry about us we will be just fine, right Jake? Thank you for bringing him over to me, Jewel. I should have known, I had not heard from him in how long, and you just let me suffer it out, how sneaky, you knew all a long.”

Of course I did, I have been in on his plan to use and abuse you. Why would I try to get you to relax and ruin his plan? Let’s just hope that he can get past having to sleep with your dumb ass to make it more legitimate. Good luck Jake, you are going to need it.
