Who did I sleep with

Who did I sleep with
The three of us settled around the table for the breakfast the man of the house had so thoughtfully provided for us. The man could make gravy. Damn, I married well.  I was washing my first bite down with a giant swig of coffee when Luna jumped up on the table to start licking my plate.

“Luna! What is wrong with you?” My words had no effect nor did me swatting her away. Unblinking brownish eyes stared at me almost daring me to shoo her again. “Does she seem different to you?”

The snickers from my family had me giving them dirty looks. “Wanna share the joke?”

Jesse got out of his chair to retrieve his phone from the bowl by the door. Odd. He had extremely strict feelings about phones at the table. He stood beside my chair for a minute before placing the phone in front of me with a picture of Luna open on it. Oh. Nonchalantly I scratched my head while looking away from my family. Still keeping my eyes from meeting theirs I clicked his phone off. Living with psychics wasn’t all that it was cracked up to be. “When did you realize?”

Jesse chortled at me. “As soon as I saw her this morning.”

“She looked off to me last night.” Savannah shrugged a shoulder as took the daintiest bite of her breakfast.

“Who might you be?” I picked up the grey tabby that was chowing down on my bacon to look her in her brown eyes that should have been a more aqua marine. A glance at their undercarriage reveled that he was a neutered male. “Guess we should post him on the lost and found pages.”

While Jesse got the new kitty settled on the floor with what was left of my breakfast, I made a new plate. On my way back to the table I threw a glance at the intruder. I felt a bit sleezy for sleeping with a cat I didn’t know. Hopefully, Luna would forgive me.

“What makes you think she is the mother-in-law?” Jesse waited until I was settled at the table again to ask the question he should already know the answer to.

“Anger, rage, and love. That’s what you said you felt from the ghosts. Isn’t that about what you feel when your mother looks at me?” My words were a little muffled since I was talking and licking gravy off my thumb at the same time. Savannah scoffed at my words. Her dad gave me an amused look.

“Yeah no. Leave out love.” I stuck my tongue out at her to be silly. As her mother I was both proud and worried that she had picked up on the undercurrents of the family dynamics. She swiped a piece of bacon off my plate in retaliation.

“She has developed a “ Jesse paused, probably looking for the right word. One that wouldn’t contradict what his daughter was sensing, yet, not hurting my feelings. Not that he really needed to worry about that. I didn’t like that red neck heifer that was his mother any more than she liked me. “grudging respect for your mother.”

“Warn me before you dump that big of a pile of bullshit.” I gestured towards my boots. “I’m wearing my favorite boots.”

“Oh, like that’s the first time they have ever had shit on them.” My daughter almost snorted gravy out her nose when she realized she had vocalized her thoughts instead of keeping them to herself. Not falling out of my chair laughing took real effort. Jesse just stared at his baby girl. A snort of laughter escaped my nose. Jesse’s eyes rolled towards the basement door. Savanah slapped a hand over her mouth. “I think I was possessed.”

“That’s a dollar in the swear jar!”
