Chapter 35 The Army of Shadows

_\[SYSTEM\]_
⚠️ PHYSICAL STATE: Stabilized by Draven Blood (Vitality: 45%).
⚠️ SYNCHRONIZATION: Diabolus 18% | Draven 12% (High Internal Conflict).
⚠️ OBJECTIVE: Locate the remainder of Clan Black Fang.

Noctaria’s industrial district was a maze of iron, steam, and dead law. Cops didn’t patrol here anymore. Neither did ambulances. If you died in these alleys, you stayed dead until someone needed the space.

Eric moved through it heavy-footed, every sense stretched thin. Catherine’s blood still burned in his veins. It gave him things he didn’t ask for—thermal vision that cut the night into layers of blue and red, hearing sharp enough to catch the rust settling on pipes three floors up. He hated it. He used it anyway.

He found John Black Fang in an old slaughterhouse. The smell hit first—sweat, leather, dried blood soaked into concrete. It clung to the back of your throat. Around John, ten werewolves worked in grim silence. Faces hollow with fatigue and rage. Some sharpened blades on whetstones. Others checked firearms, racking slides, counting rounds like they could count their odds.

“They’re few, John,” Eric said as he stepped into the circle of light thrown by a burning barrel.

John turned. Golden eyes, wild and sharp. “These are the last who didn’t swear to Nelson Lane after Clifford got taken. They’re ready to die. They’re not ready to be stupid. Why should they follow you, Draven?”

Eric ignored the insult. He walked to the center of the room and drove his combat knife into the heavy wood table. The blade sank to the hilt.

“Because I’m the only one who can open the ballroom doors without tripping the Council’s alarms,” Eric said. His voice had weight now. It filled the room. Even Gilbert, sitting in the corner with Eunice’s urn on his knees, looked up surprised. “Nelson wants an execution? We’ll give him a massacre.”

\### The Tactics of Desperation

For two hours, they drew plans in the dust. Diagrams, arrows, timing. No fancy tech. The Council jammed everything. Paper and blood were safer.

The Infiltration: Eric would walk in through the front door. Elite invitation, Draven blood, Vance name. He’d be expected. He’d be watched. That was the point. He needed to pull eyes, pull guards, pull heat off the rest.

The Assault: John and the wolves would move through the steam conduits Catherine had shown them in Chapter 33. Old Báthory routes. The Council had forgotten they existed. Almost.

The Signal: The second the midnight toast was raised, Eric would release a burst of Blood Resonance. Kill the lights. Kill the comms. Turn the ballroom into chaos.

Gilbert approached as they wrapped up. He held out a small glass vial. The liquid inside shimmered faint silver.

“This is a stabilizer,” Gilbert said. “If your Draven blood takes over mid-fight, you’ll lose yourself. You’ll become what Catherine wants you to be. Take this only if you feel the monster winning.”

Eric took it. Didn’t put it in his pocket. He drank it right there. It tasted like copper and cold rain. The crimson vein at his temple faded. For now.

\### The Heir’s Mask

Midnight was close.

Eric stood in front of a cracked mirror in the faculty locker room. He’d swapped his tactical vest for a tailored black suit—left over from his Vance days. Under the expensive fabric, muscles coiled tight as springs. He adjusted his tie. His eyes were silver again, but a thin scarlet vein still pulsed at his temple. The Draven blood hadn’t let go. It never would.

⚠️ ALERT: The University Meeting has begun.
DETECTED TARGETS: 450.
S-RANK TARGETS (COUNCIL): 5.

A hand landed on his shoulder. Not John’s. Lighter. Hesitant.

Alexis.

She was pale, wearing her waitress uniform, eyes red-rimmed from crying. She looked like she hadn’t slept in days.

“Eric… don’t do this. Nelson has guards everywhere. He knows you’re coming. It’s a trap.”

Eric turned. For the first time since the awakening, his gaze softened. Not the predator. Not the heir. Just Eric.

“I know, Alexis. But Naya’s the only family I have left with Gilbert. If I don’t do something, who will?”

He leaned down and pressed a quick kiss to her forehead. A goodbye to Brentley Carter. To the boy who worked shifts and wrote bad poetry and thought the worst thing in his life was being orphaned.

Then he walked past her, toward the grand doors of the ballroom.

The doors opened.

A sea of silk and tailored suits. Champagne flutes. Low music that stopped dead the second Eric stepped inside. Four hundred and fifty heads turned.

Silence.

Nelson Lane stood on the dais beside a tall man whose face was lost in shadow. Elijah Draven. Nelson raised his glass. At his feet, chained and gagged, Naya Black Fang struggled against her bonds. Blood matted her hair. Her eyes were defiant.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Nelson began, voice smooth, predatory. “Welcome our guest of honor. Clifford Lane’s bastard has finally graced us with his presence.”

⚠️ DANGER LEVEL MAXIMUM.
SPECIAL ABILITY UNLOCKED: “Progenitor’s Consecration.”

Eric didn’t stop walking.

Every step echoed. Every eye was on him. The ballroom was a cage of silk and money and old blood. And in the center of it, Nelson was waiting.

Eric’s hand went to the vial in his pocket. Not to drink it. Just to feel it there. A last resort.

He stopped ten feet from the dais. Close enough to see the fear in Nelson’s eyes. Good. Let him be afraid.

“Let her go,” Eric said. His voice carried without shouting. It cut through the silence like a blade.

Nelson laughed. “Or what? You’ll kill us all? You’re outnumbered, Vance. You’re outclassed. You’re out of time.”

Eric smiled. It wasn’t Eric’s smile. It was older. Colder.

“Check your steam conduits.”

Nelson’s face changed. Just for a second.

Then the lights died.

Steam Conduits – Below the Ballroom

John moved first. Ten wolves behind him, moving silent as shadows. The conduits ran hot, wet, stinking of sulfur and old metal. They didn’t need light. They hunted by scent, by sound, by the vibration of boots on steel above them.

“Positions,” John growled.

They split. Four to the east vents. Four to the west. Two stayed with him.

Above, the ballroom was chaos. Screams. Shouts. Glass breaking. The Resonance had done its job.

“Now,” John said.

The grates blew outward.

Ballroom

Eric moved. Fast. Too fast for human eyes. He hit the guards around Naya before they could react. Bone cracked. Bodies hit the floor.

Nelson drew a blade. Elijah Draven didn’t move. He just watched. Studying.

Eric reached Naya, tore the gag off.

“Can you run?” he asked.

She spat blood. “Try and stop me.”

“Good.”

The doors blew open. Wolves poured in. Black fur, bared teeth, gunfire lighting the room in staccato flashes.

Nelson backed up, stepping beside Elijah. “Father! Your toy is broken!”

Elijah’s face stayed in shadow. But his voice was clear. Cold. Amused.

“Then we get a new one.”

He stepped forward. The air in the room changed. Pressure spiked. The wolves hesitated. Even John slowed.

Eric stepped between Naya and Elijah.

“You want me?” Eric said. “Come take me.”

Elijah tilted his head. “I already have you, Eric. You just don’t know it yet.”

The ballroom doors slammed open again.

More Council guards. Enforcers. Porcelain masks glinting in the emergency red lights.

Eric looked at John. At Naya. At the wolves fighting to hold the line.

Then he looked down at his hands. Blood dripped from his claws. Not all of it his.

He felt the Draven blood rise. Felt the Diabolus rage answer it. They weren’t fighting anymore. They were merging.

⚠️ PROGENITOR’S CONSECRATION ACTIVE.
WARNING: BLOOD INSTABILITY CRITICAL.

Eric raised his head. His eyes were no longer silver. No longer scarlet. They were both. And something else underneath.

“Get Naya out,” he told John.

“And Eric?” John said.

“Hold the line.”

Eric stepped forward. Alone.

The Army of Shadows had arrived. And so had he.
