Chapter 31 The Gift of Ash
Chapter 31 The Gift of Ash

⚠️ CRITICAL BLOOD ALERT: Diabolus Source (John Black Fang) at 2% Vitality.
⚠️ PROXIMITY ALERT: Council emanation detected in Tunnels (500m).
Old Noctaria wasn’t just dark. It was dead.
The air here was thick with rot—centuries of clan wars, of fallen supernaturals left to fester in the gutters. Neon signs sputtered overhead, casting everything in diseased reds and greens, like the city itself was septic. But in this narrow alley, one smell drowned everything else: John Black Fang’s Diabolus blood.
Eric stood frozen, his Blood Perception screaming inside his skull. The massive shape of John, collapsing onto the wet cobbles, looked like a mountain of torn meat. His blood—nearly black, purple at the edges—poured in a steady, fatal rhythm, carving Diabolus rivers into the cracks of the pavement. It hissed where it touched the filth, like acid.
“Naya…” John gurgled, a blood bubble bursting on his lips. He tried to lift a clawed hand toward Eric, but his strength failed. His golden eyes, once so arrogant, were now hollow wells of terror and despair. “The Council… the Enforcers… they took my… treasure.”
“No…” Eric whispered. A cold deeper than the tunnel settled in his chest. It wasn’t John’s death that terrified him. It was Naya. The System’s predicted ultimatum was taking shape, flesh and blood and consequence.
Eric took a step back. His emerging Progenitor senses slammed into each other, too many inputs, too much data. The System flashed an option his human side recoiled from, but his Diabolus lineage demanded.

“Gilbert, help me!” Eric ordered. His voice wasn’t his anymore. It was a predator’s growl, low and commanding.
But Gilbert didn’t move. He stared at Eunice’s urn in his shaking hands. The disease was eating him alive, and the confession he’d made in the tunnel had shattered what was left of him.
“Forgive me, Eric…” Gilbert’s voice was barely breath. “I thought… I thought silence would protect you.”
“Your silence killed him!” Eric roared. The Diabolus Rage ignited, white-hot and clean. He wasn’t listening to Gilbert. He wasn’t listening to fear. He was listening to his blood. Clifford’s blood. Screaming for reparation.
He dropped to his knees beside John Black Fang. Pulled his combat knife. Didn’t hesitate. The blade bit into his palm, deep, and his blood welled up—not just red. It shimmered. Silver and crimson threads moved through it, Clifford’s Diabolus legacy and Catherine’s Draven line tangled together. It glowed faintly in the alley’s gloom.
“For Clifford,” Eric murmured. “And for Naya.”
He pressed his bleeding palm to the ruin of John’s chest.

The world went white.
It felt like his soul was being ripped through his ribs. Every cell in his body caught fire, then froze, then was rewritten. Pain wasn’t the word. Unmaking was closer. He saw things—not memories, but blood memories.
Clifford, face twisted in agony, letting Lane guards drag him away without a fight. _For them. Always for them._
Eunice, tears cutting through ash on her cheeks, stepping between a blade and her child. _Run, Eric. Run._
Gilbert, younger, hands bloody, watching the tunnel door close on the man he’d betrayed. The guilt already carving lines into his face.
Then heat. Brutal, overwhelming heat. His Diabolus blood sang, and John’s blood answered. A connection snapped into place between them, spiritual and physical, ancient and violent. It was like two storms recognizing each other.
John arched off the cobbles, a torn sound ripping from his throat. His body convulsed. The gaping wounds in his chest didn’t just close—they knit. Muscle braided to muscle. Bone flowed like wax and reformed. His black fur, matted with gore, smoothed and gleamed again as if he’d just stepped from a fight, not a grave.

Eric collapsed to his knees. His body was hollowed out, every nerve trembling. He looked at his hands. They were shaking. When he blinked, the world looked different. Sharper. Hungrier.
His eyes—they’d been silver, bright as winter moonlight. Now they were darker. And deep behind the pupils, a crimson light burned. Catherine’s blood. Draven blood. Latent until now, until he’d poured himself into another Alpha.
Gilbert stumbled to him, Eunice’s urn clutched like a talisman. “Eric! Your eyes! They’re Draven!”
Eric looked up at him. And smiled.
It wasn’t a kind smile. It wasn’t Eric’s smile. It was sharp. Sadistic. It was the smile of something that had been caged and just found the lock.
“I made the choice you couldn’t, Dad,” Eric said. His voice was velvet over a blade. “I saved John. For Clifford. For Naya. And now—”
He stopped. His gaze dropped to the urn in Gilbert’s hands. To Eunice. To the ashes of the woman who’d died to give him a human life he never got to live.
“Noctaria’s going to burn, Dad.” The words weren’t angry. They were certain. Like a fact of gravity. “And I’m going to be the one who lights the fire.”
Gilbert recoiled like Eric had struck him. “Eric—”
The ground shook.
It started as a vibration in the soles of Eric’s boots. Then the walls. Then the air. A deep, subsonic tremor that rattled the broken neon signs until they sparked and died.
Then the roar came.
It rolled from the industrial district, miles away, but it felt like it was right on top of them. Primal. Agonized. Furious. It was John Black Fang’s voice, but twisted. Bigger. This wasn’t the John who’d died in the alley. This was something else. Something that had gotten back up.
But he wasn’t roaring for Eric.
At the mouth of the alley, the shadows parted.
Three figures glided forward. No footsteps. No sound. The puddles didn’t ripple under them. They wore robes of absolute black, and their faces were covered in porcelain masks—blank, white, with a single black tear painted beneath the left eye.
Council Enforcers.
Eric’s Blood Perception reached for them automatically. And found nothing. No heat. No pulse. No blood. Just voids in the shape of men. The System in his head flickered and gave up, flashing _\[ERROR: UNREADABLE ENTITY\]_ over and over.
They weren’t alive. They were absence. They were the Council’s answer to things that wouldn’t die.
The lead Enforcer tilted its head. The movement was wrong. Too smooth. Too insectile. It raised a hand. The fingers were too long. Too many joints. An obsidian blade slid from its sleeve without a sound. It didn’t reflect the dead neon. It ate it.
They weren’t here for Eric. Not yet.
They were here for the bloodline. For the scent of Clifford Lane baked into John’s resurrection. For the Draven fire now burning in Eric’s eyes. For the ashes of Eunice Báthory.
Gilbert grabbed Eric’s arm. His fingers were ice. “Run,” he begged. “Please. You can’t—”
Eric shook him off. Gently. But finally.
The Diabolus Rage and the Draven cold were mixing in his veins, and they agreed. No more running. No more hiding. No more fathers making choices for him.
He stepped forward, putting himself between Gilbert and the voids. His new eyes didn’t flinch from the masks. His blood didn’t cool.
Behind him, John’s roar echoed again, closer now. The sound of an Alpha who’d been dead and chosen vengeance over peace.
The Enforcers advanced. Silent. Patient. Certain.
Eric’s claws extended, slow and deliberate. Silver and crimson dripped from the tips.
“Come on, then,” he said.
And Old Noctaria held its breath.
