Chapter 23 The Moon That Claimed Them

Chapter 23 The Moon That Claimed Them
The streets of Noctaria were unusually quiet that night, the air thick with the scent of upcoming rain and the hum of distant machinery. Eric walked slowly, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, mirroring the steady, rhythmic pace of the girl beside him. He had insisted on walking Naya home.

"Catch me if you can, Eric! Haha!"

Naya had given him a playful, lingering tap on the shoulder before bolting into the treeline. Her laughter drifted through the chilled forest air like a forgotten melody from their childhood. Eric, a genuine smile finally tugging at his lips, had lunged after her. He thought of her as the same Naya he had known since they were six years old—the girl who shared her snacks, the girl who cried when he got a scraped knee, the girl who seemed to need his protection more than anyone else in the world.

But as they dove deeper under the dense, suffocating canopy, the nature of the game shifted. Naya didn't run like a human. She didn't stumble over the gnarled roots or slip on the damp moss. She sliced through the underbrush with a terrifying, liquid fluidity, gliding through the darkness as if the forest itself were parting to welcome its queen. Eric, fueled by his new vampire body, struggled to keep her in sight. His lungs burned with the cold air, and his muscles were a symphony of fire and silver power.

‘She’s... incredibly fast,’ Eric realized, a cold spike of adrenaline hitting his gut. ‘All those years in high school, during track and gym class... she was acting. She was pretending to be slow, pretending to be weak, just to stay at my level. She let me believe I was the strong one, the protector, while she was holding back a hurricane.’

The realization was a blow to his pride, but he didn't have time to dwell on it. He watched as Naya’s foot hit the rough bark of an ancient oak. With a movement that defied gravity, she ran vertically up the trunk for several meters before launching herself toward a high branch. She caught it, swung with effortless grace, and vanished into the higher shadows.

Eric, piqué au vif and refusing to be left behind, channeled the icy energy of his bloodline into his legs. He mimicked her move, the world blurring as he kicked off the tree and soared through the air. He felt the raw power of the Vance name coursing through him, but even then, Naya was a step ahead, a ghost of silver and gold in the dark.

Suddenly, Naya’s laughter died, replaced by a heavy, suffocating silence. They burst into a massive clearing that had been brutally carved out of the woods. It was a scar on the earth, lit by the harsh, artificial glare of industrial floodlights. Massive excavators stood like prehistoric beasts, their metal claws caked in mud. A large, weathered sign blocked the path forward: “CONSTRUCTION ZONE – NOCTARIA TOURIST DEVELOPMENT & LUXURY RESORT.”

"They don't even wait for the forest to sleep before they kill it," Naya whispered. Her voice had changed; the playfulness was gone, replaced by a low, vibrating rasp that made the hair on Eric’s neck stand up.

She grabbed his arm and pulled him down, forcing him to crouch behind a stack of heavy wooden crates. Eric was gasping for air, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. But as he turned to look at Naya, his breath caught for a different reason. In the flickering shadows, he saw a white, silky tail, thick and powerful, twitching with nervous excitement from the back of her shorts.

"Naya... what... what is that?" he stammered, his hand reaching out but stopping inches away, trembling.

She didn't look at him. Her eyes were locked on a group of men gathered near the center of the site. "Because you're here with me, Eric. That's why I'm having fun. That’s why I can finally stop hiding. Hehe."

"I didn't know my little Naya was a mafia princess," Eric said, his voice cracking as he tried to use humor to shield himself from the mounting dread. "All those buildings you said your father owned... I thought you were exaggerating."

"I am much more than a princess of the streets, Eric," she replied, her gaze finally meeting his. Her pupils were no longer human; they were vertical slits of molten gold. "My father owns the land, but my blood belongs to the Black Fang Clan. We are the teeth in the dark."

That was when Eva’s voice rang in his mind, ice-cold and devoid of its usual sarcasm.

\[Listen closely, Eric Vance. Your father, Clifford, is dead—but he died a coward in the eyes of the supernatural world. In his youth, he fled the sacred pact he had signed with the Black Fangs. He was supposed to bridge your two houses, to marry into their blood. Instead, he ran. He abandoned his responsibilities to live a 'normal' life, dying with that blood debt unpaid and hanging over your head. But Naya... Naya never let you go. Despite your father’s betrayal, despite the shame it brought her family, she spent fifteen years watching over you in silence. She stayed by your side when she should have been hunting you down. You are her mate, Eric. She bound her soul to yours to honor a pact that a dead man tried to bury.\]

The weight of Eva’s words felt like a physical blow. Eric stared at Naya, the girl he thought he knew. Every memory of their childhood was suddenly recontextualized. Every time she had stayed late to walk him home, every time she had glared at a bully, it wasn't just friendship. It was a predator guarding its prize. His father, Clifford, had left him a legacy of debt and secrets, and Naya was the one who had been paying the interest in shadows.

"My father... he lied to me about everything," Eric whispered, a mixture of rage and grief swirling in his chest.

"He wanted you to be free," Naya said softly, her hand brushing his cheek. Her skin felt feverishly hot. "But there is no freedom for our kind, Eric. Not from the blood."

Suddenly, a group of men emerged from behind a row of shipping containers. They weren't the construction workers. They moved with a jerky, unnatural rhythm, and even from a distance, Eric could see the pulsating, raw slits on their necks. Shifters.

"WATCH OUT!" Naya screamed, her voice breaking into a guttural howl.

Before Eric’s eyes, the girl he loved shattered. It was a violent, visceral transformation. He heard the sickening crunch of bones elongating and resetting. Her clothes tore as her muscles surged with impossible mass. Her ears shifted upward, turning pointed and furred, and her white tail became a magnificent, wild plume. Her hands widened, fingers ending in razor-sharp ebony claws that glinted under the floodlights.

"I WILL TEAR THEM APART!" she roared, a sound that shook the very earth beneath Eric’s feet.

Eric was paralyzed. The shock was so profound that he felt a wave of nausea wash over him. This wasn't a girl; this was an Alpha war-beast, a creature of nightmare and legend. She had been hiding this monster inside her while they watched movies, while they studied, while they laughed.

\[Don't just stand there like a stunned human,\] Eva hissed in his ear. \[She is fighting for you! She is fighting to wash away the stain Clifford left on your name. If she dies here, the Vance line ends with a whimper. Is that what you want?\]

Eric watched Naya leap across the clearing, a blur of white fur and lethal intent. She collided with the first shifter, her claws ripping through his "human" face like paper, revealing a hideous, slimy, fish-like head beneath. The sight was revolting, a glimpse into the true, ugly nature of the world he had inherited.

‘If she looks like that underneath... if we are all just monsters playing dress-up...’ Eric thought, his mind reeling. But then he saw Naya take a hit, a shifter’s blade grazing her shoulder, and the protective instinct of the Vance bloodline finally snapped into place.

He wouldn't let his father's debt be Naya's death warrant. He wouldn't let her fight alone for a pact she hadn't even signed.

"ASSAAAAA!"

With a cry of raw, unbridled fury, Eric surrendered to the silver fire in his veins. His right arm exploded with power, transforming into a massive, silver-furred limb tipped with claws that mirrored Naya’s. He dove from behind the crates, his vision turning to a predator’s monochrome, joining the white wolf in a macabre dance of blood and bone.

Eric Vance finally understood. Noctaria belonged to them, and he would kill anyone who tried to take it.
