Chapter 62 Reunion
Kai's POV
Zara had changed seriously these past few days. I knew I was having gaps in my memories, but nothing she was saying was really showing signs like she was okay.
Something had unlocked within her... The devourer, it was called. And trust me, it was our for blood and hunger. Several issues of people, wolves being found dead had been piled up in Dr. Voss's office. It had something to do with Zara, or so I heard from Dr. Voss.
I wanted to ask her if everything was okay with her, yet she seemed drawn to herself. She would probably really hate me at this point in time, considering that I had previously handed her over to Dr. Voss.
But that wasn't me.
I don't know if she would believe that.
My alien and human side are having glitches. It's like I keep being rewired everyday and I have no say in what's going on in my life.
"Kai.... Earth to hell." Rex said, as he sat on my bed.
I didn't see him enter into my room. Did I even want to know how that was possible?
"What are you thinking about Kai?" He questioned.
"I was thinking about Zara." I responded sheepishly.
Maybe I could talk to him about everything going on in my life. After all, he has lived my life.
"What's happening to Zara and I?" I questioned.
"What's happenin? Howw?" He retorted.
"We're fighting each other.... There's betrayal... Gaps in communication... A whole lot of things."
"It happened with me and Luna." He said.
"But somehow.... We always found our ways back to each other."
"It seems that we won't ever go back to how we used to be." I said.
"You've just got to trust the process." He said.
"You'll be good.... For what it's worth... You won't end up destroying her."
"But.... That's not what you've always said..." I said.
"We never said you'll destroy each other Kai." He stated.
"Your wolves just assumed the worst of everything."
"I'll just see how to go about it." I said.
"You'll be good.... Just find a way to talk to her. I'm sure she would listen." He responded.
"I'll just talk to her." I said.
"You love her... Don't you?" He questioned.
"Yes I do." I replied.
The words sat heavy in the air between us, honest and terrifying in equal measure.
Rex studied me for a long moment, his expression softer than I’d seen it in days.
“Then stop circling her like she’s a ticking bomb,” he said quietly.
“She feels it. Zara has always felt everything.”
I exhaled, rubbing a hand down my face.
“What if I say the wrong thing?”
Rex snorted.
“You always do. And she still comes back.”
That earned a weak smile from me.
He stood, clapping my shoulder.
“Go find her before Voss does.”
And just like that, he was gone.
I found Zara at the old observatory wing....the abandoned one no one used anymore because the energy readings there were… unstable. Of course she’d choose somewhere broken. She always did.
The door creaked as I pushed it open.
She stood by the tall arched window, moonlight spilling over her like a blessing and a curse. Her hair was loose, cascading down her back in dark waves, her shoulders tense as though she was bracing for impact.
She didn’t turn around.
“I know you’re there,” she said softly.
My chest tightened.
“You always do.”
Silence stretched between us, thick and fragile. I took a few steps closer, careful, like approaching a wild thing that might bolt if I moved too fast.
“You shouldn’t be here,” she murmured.
“Neither should you.”
That made her huff a quiet, humorless laugh.
“Fair.”
I stopped a few feet behind her. Close enough to feel her heat. Close enough that my wolf stirred, restless and aching.
“You’ve been avoiding me,” I said.
She finally turned. God.
Her eyes were darker now, shadows swirling beneath the familiar brown, like storms waiting to break. But they still softened when they met mine, just for a second....long enough to hurt.
“I don’t know which version of you I’ll get anymore,” she said.
“The one who looks at me like I’m his world… or the one who hands me over to be dissected.”
The words sliced straight through me.
“I would never....” My voice broke. I forced myself to keep going.
“I didn’t choose that. Whatever I did… it wasn’t me. And I know how useless that sounds.”
She searched my face, like she was looking for cracks, for lies, for proof I’d fail her again.
“You left me,” she whispered.
I stepped closer without thinking.
“I came back.”
Her breath hitched.
“You always do,” she said.
“That’s the problem.”
Something inside me snapped then....not violently, but desperately. I reached out, stopping just short of touching her cheek.
“Zara… look at me.”
She hesitated, then lifted her gaze.
“I am still here,” I said.
“Even when my memories are torn apart. Even when my mind betrays me. Whatever they’re doing to us, whatever Voss is hiding.... I am fighting it. For you.”
Her lips parted slightly. The bond between us hummed, low and aching, pulling tight like a stretched wire.
“You feel different,” she said.
“Your presence… it’s warmer. Stronger.”
“That’s because I stopped running from what I am,” I admitted.
“And from what you are.”
Her eyes flickered.... devourer energy stirring, then settling.
Slowly, cautiously, she stepped into my space.
I didn’t move.
Her fingers brushed my wrist, tentative at first, like she was testing whether I’d disappear. When I didn’t, she curled her hand around mine.
Electricity surged up my arm.
“I don’t trust myself,” she said quietly.
“There are moments I want to tear the world apart. And moments I just want to feel… normal.”
I lifted her hand, pressing it to my chest.
“Then feel this.”
Her palm rested over my heartbeat.
It was racing.
“So are you,” she murmured.
“Only when you’re near.”
Her breath shuddered, and before I could stop myself, I leaned in. I gave her time....time to pull away, to say no.
She didn’t.
Our foreheads touched, noses brushing, breath mingling. The world narrowed to just us....the hum of the bond, the moonlight, the ache we’d been denying for too long.
When she kissed me, it wasn’t frantic.
It was slow. Deep. Like coming home after surviving a war.
Her hands slid into my hair, grounding me, and I wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her closer. She fit against me like she always had, like she always would.
My wolf purred.So did hers.
We broke apart only when breathing became a necessity.
She rested her forehead against my chest, eyes closed.
“I hate how much I still want you.”
I smiled against her hair.
“Good. Because I hate how much I’d fall apart without you.”
She laughed softly, then went quiet.
“Kai…”
“Yes?”
“If I lose control again—if the devourer takes over....”
“I’ll be here,” I said without hesitation.
“I’ll bring you back. Every time.”
She looked up at me, vulnerability raw in her gaze.
“Promise?”
I pressed a kiss to her brow.
“On every version of myself.”
For a moment, everything felt… right.
Too right.
The bond suddenly jolted....sharp, blinding pain lancing through my skull. Zara gasped, clutching my shirt as the room seemed to tilt.
“Kai,” she breathed, eyes glowing faintly.
“Something’s wrong.”
The air in the observatory thickened, humming with foreign energy. Symbols flared to life along the walls....ancient, alien, watching.
And somewhere deep within the academy…
Something woke up.
I pulled Zara closer, heart pounding.
Whatever peace we’d stolen…
It was about to be taken back.
