Chapter 150 Triblood

Chapter 150 Triblood
LYRIANNE

"Stupid wolves," the king spits behind me as he tosses his sword outside. I can barely breathe as I watch Lorcan's eyes flutter shut. Is he dying on me?

Is he dead?

"Lorcan," I whisper as I place my hand on the side of his head that isn't split open and bleeding. His blood sizzles when it hits the ground and the smell makes my stomach turn. He can't be dying. He can't. "Lorcan? Lorcan, wake up."

"If that wolf wakes up, I want him dead!" the king bellows. "How dare he attack a prince? My son? In our own home!?"

I whip my head around and make eye contact with the prince whose arm is being wrapped in a bandage. He's then picked up and carried deeper into the cave while the king rages.

I then make eye contact with Zorah, who’s staring at us with wide eyes and her hands covering her mouth. I can’t even feel my heart beating in my chest anymore—that’s how nervous I am.

I turn my attention back to Lorcan while the king goes on talking about how he should’ve never let werewolves into their territory. “That’s what got us all killed the first time, isn’t it? According to the books? We’re bigger than them and we have fire in our blood, but werewolves have always been stupid. Fear is not something that exists within them. My son almost died today because of this!”

I touch Lorcan again, hoping and rooting to the Goddess that he will open his eyes, but he’s still bleeding and he won’t open his eyes.

It doesn’t help that the smell of his burning fur reaches my nostrils. He can’t lie in this position for too long.

Goddess, it feels like I’m losing my mind.

Turning around, I stand and walk right up to the king, who looks at me like I’m an inconvenience. Trembling, I tell him, “Please, Your Highness. Spare his life! I know that what he did was wrong—”

“No, you don’t know,” he interrupts. “Because if you knew, you wouldn’t be standing here and asking me this! The boy will die. He attacked a prince. That’s all there is to it.”

“Please,” I cry hysterically as I clutch his arm, ignoring the look he’s giving me. “I’ll do anything. Anything. I’ll marry your son. Just please, give him the help he needs and don’t kill him. It’s not his fault. The bond does that to us.”

“You would marry my son regardless, as far as I know,” he says indifferently. “Your father told me that you wanted to save Eron.”

“Y-Yes, but he never told me how much it would cost! He only told me that I would have to speak to you and—”

A chortle escapes the king’s lips and I fall silent helplessly.

“Speak? Do you think that would be enough to make us go all the way to Eron to save the werewolves, who’re the only reason why we’re in this mess to begin with? The war between our kind and the wolves destroyed us. It’s as simple as that. Many of us even refuse to live within a society like this one because they’re terrified of extinction and another war. That’s why so many of them choose to live among humans. That’s why you exist, Lyrianne Swanson. The triblood.”

I step closer to him and say, “But there has to be something you gain from all this. If you truly hate werewolves, then why would you even consider such an agreement?”

I’m aware of every passing second. It’s almost painful for me. Lorcan could be dead behind me, and I still have to convince this man to give him another chance.

A small smile curves his lips. “Good. You’re like your father after all. I was beginning to worry that he’d sent me a wolfish fool.”

“Whatever you want, I’ll give it to you,” I vow. “Just spare his life. Please.”

The king looks at me for a long time, his expression not giving anything away. He then turns away and snaps his fingers at the dragon warriors behind us. They rush forward, forming a circle around Lorcan.

“What’re they doing? Where are they taking him?”

“Don’t you worry about that,” the king says. “For now, you worry about the promises you made to me just now. You marry my son, and in that way, we’ll have direct access to all of Eron. Your union will ensure that werewolves will never again turn against us.”

I don’t even have the strength to nod at his words. I watch as Lorcan is carried away in wolf form. He’s still unconscious, but I can feel that he’s alive. Deep inside of me, I feel it.

If he were dead, the bond between us would’ve died.

The king puts an arm around my shoulders and says, “There’s someone who’s been dying to meet you. I believe the two of you met not too long ago. This way.”

We walk a little further into the cave, and that’s when I see the old woman with the massive hump on her back. She grins as I approach. I saw her before Lorcan decided to attack the prince, but obviously, we didn’t have a chance to talk to each other.

“Girl,” she says with the same grin. “I’ve been waiting for you this whole time. I knew you’d come.”

I’m forced to stop thinking about Lorcan’s current health and what I’ll have to do and focus solely on her. She extends a hand and without allowing myself to think twice, I take it.

“I sensed your power even from afar,” she claims. “And I knew you would have to come here no matter what. You’re the answer to all our dilemmas. You’re the key.”

As soon as her hand closes around mine, she blows something powdery into my eyes and I double over in pain. The burning starts in my face and starts traveling lower down my body.

“Now, your transformation will begin,” I hear her say before my whole body begins trembling with pain. “Let us see what form your spirit will take, triblood.”

With that, my vision goes black and I sink into the deepest sleep of my entire life, burning the whole time.
