Chapter 141 The Wrong Girl
Chapter 141 The Wrong Girl
LYRIANNE
Finn slows the car to a stop when we reach our destination, which is basically several meters away from the border. I don't really see the border, mostly because there's just the forest beyond.
"We're here," he announces as he looks around. I want to ask him whether or not he has more information on what happens next, but I keep the question to myself and just wait.
I exchange a look with Lorcan, who looks more and more suspicious with each passing second. Honestly, I don't blame him. It does feel dangerous, being here and counting on Finn for everything, especially after what he's done.
I do trust Zorah, though, and if she has nothing to worry about, then that's fine with me.
"What now?" Zorah asks for all of us.
"Well, now we go and meet those guys," Finn claims as he looks back at me. "But we can't go together. If anything happens, then a few of us can get away."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Lorcan asks sharply. "You want us to split up?"
"I think it's the better idea," he states. "I told Dad to tell those guys that I'd show up with Lyria, since they know me."
Lorcan scoffs. "You can fucking forget about that. She's not going anywhere with you."
"That's what we discussed," Finn says in a louder voice. "They don't know what Lyria looks like. They'll know it's her because she'll be with me."
"No. Fucking. Way."
They start arguing back and forth about this, and all I can do is look back and forth between them helplessly. I see where Lorcan is coming from, and I'm definitely hesitant to split up.
When it's clear that they're not going to come to an agreement, I burst out, "We have to go! This isn't helping!"
"Yeah, you should go with Finn, Lyria," Zorah cuts in. "We don't want there to be any misunderstandings. You need to get out of Eron by today, or there's no guaranteeing your safety."
"I understand that, but I have to side with Lorcan, too," I claim before looking back at Finn. "There's no reason why we can't go all four of us. I mean, at the end of the day, we're all meant to leave together, right?"
Something crosses Finn's face, and he looks away for a fraction of a second. I can tell he's hurt, but how can I take the risk after everything he did to me?
It's not fair for him to expect something like this from me.
“That’s not part of the plan,” Finn insists. “I take you to them, and once they confirm that it’s you, they’ll come back for Zorah and Lorcan.”
“No, Finn,” I say firmly. “We all leave together, alright?”
I can’t deny how fast my heart is beating as all four of us get out of the car and head deeper into the woods, leaving the car behind us.
I suddenly feel terrified that a Bitten will walk up to us and attack, but if I don’t push this paranoia out of my mind, I’m done for.
Lorcan wraps his hand around mine, and I naturally inch closer to him. It doesn’t escape my notice how Finn looks over at us, and I find myself wondering why the hell he looks so jumpy.
I don’t know why, but I have a terrible feeling about this. Like really awful.
Either way, I keep going. For several minutes, we don’t say anything to each other and the only sound that can be heard is the one of dead leaves being stepped on. Lorcan keeps looking around and I do the same.
Then, he stops in his tracks completely, raises his head as if to sniff the air, then says, “What is that? Do you hear it?”
I turn my head to look at Finn just as a bullet hits the tree right to my left. Ducking, I immediately scramble to get away. The deafening sound of bullets reaches my ears and if it weren’t for Lorcan, I wouldn’t have the slightest idea of where to go.
“Lyria!” Finn yells, but at this point, I ignore him completely and follow Lorcan away from the shots.
What the hell is going on?
“Fucking asshole!” Lorcan grits out angrily. “He fucking lied to us! He lied!”
I don’t even know what I could say to that. I’m terrified that we’ll get hurt because I was foolish enough to put my trust in Finn.
What the hell was I thinking? I should’ve guessed the letter was—
My thought is cut in half when something hard crashes into me, making me hit the ground and let go of Lorcan’s hand. That’s when I realize that it’s not a thing, but a man.
“Easy!” he says roughly as he places his knee on the small of my back. “You don’t want any problem, do you?”
I struggle just to turn my head and look at Lorcan, who has three men upon him. He calls my name loudly and I say his name back.
From the corner of my eye, I see Finn being dragged toward us. He’s also struggling to free himself and I catch him tell the guys, “You’ve got it all wrong, you stupid assholes!”
What’s going on?
Finn is dropped on the dirt and guns are pointed at him so he can’t move. Lorcan looks up, shaking his head, and he angrily says, “You’re a really dumb fuck, you know that?”
“Fuck off,” Finn hisses. “This is all your fucking fault. I told you that—”
“Would you two stop whining like little bitches?” one of the guys says. “Now, I know there was an arrangement with that werewolf, but there’s none now, alright? So, you have two choices. It’s either you turn around and disappear, or you die. Plain and simple.”
Finn lets out an ugly little laugh. “You really are dumb, aren’t you? Are all humans like this?”
The speaker kicks him in the head. “Watch it, kid. You don’t know who the fuck you’re talking to!”
“You’ve got the wrong girl, assholes!” Finn yells. “The one you took with you is my sister, Zorah, not Lyrianne. Lyrianne’s over there.”
All their eyes settle on me, and my insides harden to stone.
What now?
