Chapter 140 Happy Reunion

Chapter 140 Happy Reunion
LORCAN

Trusting Finnegan Zicco could be a huge mistake, which is why I'm alert. I don't like the fact that he's on the wheel either because that gives him a lot of power.

But what the fuck can we do?

Right now, we're headed back to the Zicco property so he can pick up his sister, who'll be coming with us. Lyria seems to believe his intentions, but I know that it's only a matter of time before he tries to pull some shit.

I'll be watching him, though. I definitely won't be caught by surprise.

After picking her up, we'll be headed straight to the border, where a car will be waiting for us. It seems Morian has arranged for all four of us to be taken to Cassea. I made it clear that I wasn't going to leave her alone, so I'm tagging along.

As for Wallace, well, he looks worse and worse with each passing moment. I don't even know if he'll be able to make it.

I don't want to imagine the worst, but...

"How much longer until we get there?" I ask impatiently. We've already left the city behind us and I'm getting worried. It'll only be a matter of time before the Alpha Council and my father's supporters find out that Lyria isn't at the academy, and I don't want to run that risk.

Not a fucking chance.

"We're just five minutes away," he claims. "Lyria, you remember the way, don't you?"

She doesn't even seem to listen to him. Her eyes are glued to the broken window, and she looks deep in thought.

Finnegan isn't lying about this, though, because we arrive in no time. He kills the engine and that seems to pull Lyria out of her trance. Finnegan looks back at us and says, "Stay here. I'll go and get her, and we'll be on our way."

"Bring clothes for Lorcan," Lyria tells him, which makes him cut me with a glare before nodding and stepping out of the car. Once he's gone, Lyria inches closer to me and I wrap my good arm around her shoulders to pull her closer. Her head rests on my chest and she sucks in a breath.

"Lorcan," she says, sounding a little desperate.

"I know, baby," I claim. "It isn't easy. I don't know what to expect either, but at least we'll be together, alright?"

Her throat bobs and she nods.

This is all I can say to reassure her for the time being. The longer Finnegan takes, the more I worry. Besides, if we don't get Wallace to a hospital now, I don't think there's any chance he'll make it.

But at last, he and his sister show up, and she and Lyria have a really emotional reunion. I guess Lyria worried that she was hurt or dead. I get dressed quickly while they exchange a few words and warm embraces outside, then it's time to go.

I keep glancing at Wallace, worried that he might not make it, but Finnegan is speeding up, so there could still be a chance.

Unfortunately, none of us can walk with him inside, so we have to leave him right by the entrance and drive off. He manages to give us a thumbs up, but I still feel shitty about the whole thing.

We’re in his car, for fuck’s sake. I don’t even know when we’ll see him again at this point.

The car ride is silent. I believe that, this time, Finnegan is driving us to the border, where we’ll meet with the people Lyria’s father sent to help snuggle us to the other side.

It’s Zorah who finally says, “Well, this is something, isn’t it? Who would’ve guessed that we’d all be here like… like one, big, happy family?”

I notice how Lyria stiffens at the words and I myself find them unnecessary. Why the hell would she say that after everything that her brother did to Lyria?

We couldn’t be farther from a family.

From the corner of my eye, I watch as she closes her hand around Lyria’s. She rests her head against her shoulder and says, “You don’t know how happy I am that you’re here. I was so worried about you. I wanted to kill Dad when we were face-to-face for the first time. But then he explained the whole story to me and I kind of felt bad for not putting more faith in him. For whatever it’s worth, he is still the man who raised you. He would never have tried to hurt you.”

“I don’t think he feels the same way,” Lyria says honestly. “And before you ask, no, I don’t think that he’s doing this because he cares about me. There has to be something in it for him.”

Before Zorah can get a word out, Finnegan jumps to his father’s defense. “Dad’s an asshole, and you know as well as I do that we’ve had our share of disagreements, but what could he have to gain from this? Imagine how much he could profit from selling you out to the Alpha Council? At this point, you’re the most wanted citizen in all of Eron.”

I glance at Lyria and I can tell that she isn’t convinced by his answer, and neither am I. A man like Morian Zicco didn’t get to where he is by being courteous or kind.

There’s definitely something in it for him.

But what?

“Well, I agree with Finn,” Zorah says. “But let’s not talk about this, okay? I know things seem so grim right now, but this is a happy moment, right? We have each other, and you’re going to meet your Dad for the first time. How do you feel about that part?”

Lyria focuses on her lap and says, “I don’t know. I haven’t really given it much of a thought.”

As it turns out, our little adventure isn’t as happy, as Zorah suggests.

And guess whose fault it is?
