Chapter 19 THE FOURTH MOLTING: IRON WINGS
Chapter 19 THE FOURTH MOLTING: IRON WINGS
To rule the land, you must first own the sky."
Kaelen stood at the precipice of the Western Ridge, the air around him humming with the stolen vitality of a fallen noble. The mana he had siphoned from Julian wasn't just energy; it was a pressurized storm, a concentrated essence of greed and life-force that churned within Kaelen’s veins like liquid fire.
"Master, the mountain is screaming," Thorne’s voice rumbled from the cave entrance. The big man was braced against the stone, his eyes wide as he watched the air around Kaelen ripple and distort. "The vibrations... the miners think the earth is going to split."
"Let it split, Thorne," Kaelen rasped. His skin was pale, shimmering with a translucent, diamond-like sheen. "The siphon is full. Julian’s life wasn't much, but it was enough to trigger the next stage."
"You’re shaking, Kaelen. Your back—" Thorne stepped forward, then recoiled.
A sound like tearing canvas and breaking iron echoed through the hollow chamber. Kaelen fell to his knees, his fingers clawing into the solid granite floor, leaving deep gouges in the stone.
\[System Alert: Siphoned Mana at Critical Mass.\]
\[Third Molting: Fully Integrated.\]
\[Commencing Fourth Molting: Astral Membrane.\]
"AAAGH!" Kaelen’s scream was a guttural roar that shook the stalactites from the ceiling.
"Master!" Thorne shouted, reaching out, but a shockwave of violet energy threw him back against the wall.
"Stay... back!" Kaelen groaned.
His tunic shredded. Beneath the fabric, his shoulder blades shifted, bulging unnaturally. The skin didn't just tear; it folded back as two massive, obsidian-black structures erupted from his spine. They weren't flesh and bone—they were a black, indestructible alloy, shimmering with the same dark light as the Dragon Nest.
SNAP. WHIIRRR.
The wings unfurled, stretching ten feet in either direction. They were sharp, segmented, and heavy, yet they moved with the grace of silk. They weren't just for flight; they were weapons, the edges serrated and glowing with a faint, draconic heat.
\[Fourth Molting Successful: Iron Wings (Astral Membrane) Acquired.\]
\[New Passive: Sovereign of the Heights.\]
Kaelen stood slowly, the weight of the wings feeling as natural as his own arms. He flexed them, and the sheer wind pressure blew the dust and loose rubble out of the cave mouth.
"By the ancestors," Thorne whispered, staring at the black-winged silhouette against the moonlight. "You look like the old legends. The ones they burned the books to hide."
"The legends weren't stories, Thorne. They were warnings," Kaelen said, his voice now possessing a dual-tone resonance.
He turned his head, his \[Dragon Eyes\] catching a movement in the rafters. A common mountain hawk, lured by the sudden surge of energy, perched on a jagged outcrop, its eyes fixed on Kaelen in primal fear.
"Come here," Kaelen commanded.
The bird froze. Kaelen reached out a hand. He didn't grab the creature; he simply touched its breast with a single finger.
"Infect," Kaelen whispered.
A thread of violet mana snaked from Kaelen’s fingertip into the hawk’s feathers. The bird’s wings twitched violently. Its eyes, once gold, turned into a miniature mirror of Kaelen’s own gold-flecked obsidian. Its talons lengthened, turning into the same black alloy as Kaelen’s wings.
"What did you do to it?" Thorne asked, stepping closer.
"I gave it a better master," Kaelen said. He closed his eyes, and suddenly, his vision shifted. He saw himself standing in the cave from ten feet above. He saw the layout of the valley, the distant lights of the city, and the heat signatures of the guards at the border. "It’s a Draconic Spy. Every beast I touch becomes my eyes. I don't need a Guild of men when the very sky belongs to me."
"Then we’re ready," Thorne said, clutching his massive hammer. "We can take the city by morning."
"No," Kaelen said, his wings folding tightly against his back like a cloak of armor. "We aren't the ones who will start this war."
Suddenly, Kaelen flinched. A sharp, piercing chime echoed in the back of his skull—a red-alert pulse from the System that made his vision flicker.
\[CRITICAL ALERT: Holy Resonance Detected.\]
\[Threat Level: Extermination.\]
\[Source: The Cathedral of Light.\]
"Master? Your eyes... they’re bleeding," Thorne gasped.
"The Church," Kaelen hissed, his hand flying to his temple. "They’ve stopped searching for a 'shadow.' They’ve felt the Molting. They’ve felt a Dragon rising in the Western Ridge."
"What are they doing?"
Kaelen looked toward the horizon, where the city of Grey-Rock sat. A massive, blinding pillar of white light was rising from the Cathedral, piercing the clouds. It wasn't a pulse this time; it was a beacon.
\[System Notification: Declaration of Holy War.\]
\[The Church of Light has authorized 'The Final Sanctification.'\]
\[Objective: Total Annihilation of Grey-Rock Western Ridge.\]
"They’re not coming to arrest us, Thorne," Kaelen said, his wings snapping open in a display of dark defiance. "They’ve declared Holy War. They’re coming to burn the mountain to the ground."
"Let them come!" Thorne roared, his black lightning-core surging. "We’ll bury them in the tunnels!"
"They aren't just sending knights," Kaelen said, his \[Dragon-Sight\] picking up the movement of thousands of silver-clad figures marching toward the border. "The High Priest has summoned the Paladin Lords. They think they can extinguish the 'Dark Presence' before it learns to fly."
Kaelen walked to the edge of the cliff and looked down at the gathering storm of silver and gold below.
"They’re too late," Kaelen whispered, his iron wings catching the rising wind. "The mountain isn't a tomb anymore. It’s a fortress."
A second hawk, then a third, landed on his shoulders, their obsidian eyes glowing in the dark.
"Go," Kaelen commanded the birds. "Tell the city that the Light is coming. And tell them the Shadow is the only thing that will keep them from burning."
As the hawks took flight, a deep, booming horn sounded from the city gates—a sound that signaled the beginning of the end. The Holy War had arrived at Kaelen’s doorstep, and the sky was about to turn black.
