Chapter 112
Chapter 112
The sun had already disappeared below the horizon, plunging the narrow valley into near-total darkness. The only light came from the flickering torches the rebels carried, casting ghostly shadows on the rocky walls around them. The air was heavy, laden with tension, as if nature itself knew something terrible was about to happen. Castian felt the weight of responsibility on his shoulders, but also a fierce determination driving him forward. He knew Kaien's army was close, and the approaching battle would be one of the most difficult of his life.
"They're coming," whispered Arun, appearing beside Castian with a grim look. "Kaien isn't playing around. He brought at least twice our numbers, and his troops are well-armed."
Castian nodded, his eyes fixed on the valley ahead. The terrain was narrow, with steep rocky walls on both sides, which limited the enemy troops' movement but also left the rebels cornered. It was a trap, and Kaien knew it.
"We need to prepare," said Castian, his voice firm and full of authority. "We can't let them crush us. We'll use the terrain to our advantage."
He turned to the group of rebels surrounding him, their faces reflecting a mixture of fear and determination. They knew the situation was desperate, but they also knew there was nowhere to run. It was fight or die.
"Listen!" shouted Castian, his voice echoing through the valley. "We fight not just for ourselves! We fight for all who have been oppressed! We fight for a better tomorrow!"
His eyes swept over the group, feeling the energy his words ignited. They weren't just a disorganized band of rebels; they were warriors, fighting for something greater than themselves.
"Mei Lin!" he called, turning to the mage, who was already in motion, organizing the archers on the higher ground of the valley. "We need traps and illusions to slow them down. Use everything you can."
Mei nodded, her eyes shining with determination.
"I'm already on it. They won't know what hit them."
As Mei and the mages worked quickly to prepare magical traps and illusions, Castian turned to the melee fighters.
"We will hold the front line," he said, his voice firm. "We can't let them advance. If they break our defense, we're lost."
The warriors nodded, their faces set with determination. They knew the coming battle would be bloody, but they also knew they had no choice. It was fight or die.
The first sign of the attack came with a distant roar, like the sound of approaching thunder. Then, the ground began to tremble, and the torches flickered violently. Castian looked into the valley, his eyes narrowing as he saw the first ranks of Kaien's army emerging from the darkness. They were numerous, their armor gleaming in the torchlight, their swords and spears ready for combat.
"Ready yourselves!" shouted Castian, his voice echoing through the valley.
Mei's archers were already in position, their arrows aimed at the sky. When Kaien's army came within range, she gave the signal, and a rain of arrows fell upon the enemy. Many fell, but others continued to advance, driven by Kaien's fury.
"Now!" shouted Mei, triggering the magical traps that had been prepared.
Explosions of light and fire erupted amidst the enemy ranks, causing chaos and confusion. Kaien's soldiers shouted, trying to regroup, but the illusions created by the mages disoriented them further. It was a temporary advantage, but Castian knew it wouldn't last long.
"Forward!" he yelled, leading the melee fighters toward the enemy.
The battle was intense from the start. The rebels fought with everything they had, but Kaien's superior numbers and weaponry were overwhelming. Many rebels fell, their cries of pain echoing through the valley. Castian fought like a man possessed, his sword cutting through the air with deadly precision. He knew he couldn't falter, not for a second.
Amidst the chaos, he finally saw Kaien. The general was at the center of the battle, his gaze cold and calculating. He smiled when he saw Castian, as if he had been waiting for this moment.
"Do you think you can erase Feng's legacy?" shouted Kaien, his voice full of disdain. "You will never be anything but a boy desperate for revenge!"
Kaien's words hit Castian like a punch to the gut, but they also ignited a fury he could barely control. He charged toward the general, his sword gleaming in the firelight.
"I am no longer that boy," replied Castian, his voice filled with anger and determination. "And you will find that out now."
The duel between the two was fierce. Kaien was a skilled warrior, his sword moving with precision and strength. But Castian was fast and clever, using the terrain to his advantage and exploiting every weakness he found. The fight was evenly matched, with both combatants giving and receiving blows, but Castian knew he couldn't lose.
"You don't understand, Kaien," said Castian, landing a blow that forced the general to retreat. "We don't fight for revenge. We fight for a future."
Kaien laughed, but his smile was forced. He was beginning to tire, and Castian knew it. With a quick movement, he disarmed the general, his sword clattering to the ground with a metallic sound. Kaien looked at him, his eyes full of surprise and fear.
"This isn't over," whispered Kaien, but his voice no longer held the same confidence as before.
Castian didn't respond. Instead, he launched a final blow that unfortunately missed its mark. He had wanted Kaien's fall to be the turning point of the battle. However, the enemy soldiers and their leader retreated with their tails between their legs. The rebels, for their part, celebrated even though they knew the war was not yet won.
