Chapter 110

Chapter 110
The flames of the torches flickered around the rebel camp, casting dancing shadows on the tense faces of the gathered warriors. The air was thick with a mixture of anxiety and determination, as if every breath was a prelude to what was to come. Castian stood at the center of the strategy tent, his eyes scanning the map on the rustic wooden table. Around him, Mei Lin, the strategist Jiang, the archer Li Wei, and other key members of the rebellion watched him in silence, awaiting his decision. The tension was palpable, as if the air itself was waiting for a word that could change the course of history.

"This is the moment we've been waiting for," said Jiang, his voice low but laden with expectation. "We've struck Feng's army outposts, cut their supply lines, dismantled their informant network. Now, the fortress in the mountains is our last obstacle."

Castian nodded, his fingers tracing the map as he studied the mountain's winding paths. The fortress was nearly impenetrable, protected by ancient walls and spells that repelled any attempt at a direct invasion. But now, there was an opportunity—the Celestial Pearl. The legendary jewel, sealed for centuries to prevent its misuse, was the key to undoing the magical barriers protecting the fortress. However, its use came with a terrible price.

Mei Lin, ever cautious, arranged her scrolls and spoke:
"The Celestial Pearl was sealed centuries ago to prevent its misuse, but according to the manuscripts I found, it can be used to undo the fortress's magical barriers. The problem is that the cost to activate it will be enormous. Whoever uses it will have their life energy drained."

The silence that followed was cutting. Castian frowned, already determined.
"Then I'll do it," he declared, his voice unshakable.

Mei Lin, however, slammed her palm on the table, her eyes burning with indignation.
"You can't decide that alone! We fight as one. This burden isn't yours alone, Castian."

Li Wei crossed his arms, looking at him seriously.
"Mei is right. If we make the mistake of putting everything in your hands, we are doomed to fail. Victory will come from our unity, not from isolated sacrifices."

Castian opened his mouth to retort but closed it again, feeling the weight of his allies' words. He wasn't used to sharing responsibilities. For years, he had carried the guilt, the anger, and the hope alone. But perhaps it was time to trust others.

"Alright," he murmured. "We'll find another way."

The tension in the tent eased slightly, and the meeting continued. Jiang suggested dividing the troops into three fronts: a main attack unit that would march toward the main gate; an elite team that would enter through the newly discovered underground passage; and a small group tasked with handling the Celestial Pearl. The strategy was risky, but it was the only way to ensure all angles were covered.

"The main unit will be led by me," said Jiang, pointing to the main gate on the map. "We need to create a distraction large enough for the elite team to enter undetected."

"And the Celestial Pearl?" asked Mei, her eyes fixed on the jewel resting on the table.

"I'll take care of it," replied Castian, his voice firm. "But not alone. We need someone who understands magic to help me."

Mei nodded.
"I'll go with you. We can't risk losing the Pearl or failing to activate it."

Li Wei raised his hand.
"And I will lead the elite team. I know the tunnels better than anyone."

The plan was set, but a sense of uncertainty still hung in the air. Each of them knew that, despite all the preparations, the approaching battle would be unpredictable. Feng's fortress wasn't just a physical structure; it was a symbol of his power, and he wouldn't surrender it without a fight.

That night, Castian had another dream.

He found himself in his village again, a helpless boy. The flames consumed the houses, and screams of pain and despair echoed in the air. He ran through the dirt streets, trying to reach his mother's voice, but every step seemed to take him further away. Then, amidst the smoke, Cheng, his father, appeared. His gaze was icy, accusatory.

"You can't run from your past, Castian."

His heart raced. He tried to speak, to explain that he was now fighting to right the wrongs of the past, but Cheng merely raised his hand, and the scene changed.

He now saw a different future. Children laughing and running through the fields, villages rebuilt, fear transformed into hope. It was a glimpse of a world he had never imagined possible. But the vision was interrupted by a deafening roar, Feng's shadow looming over everything, threatening to destroy this future before it could even become real.

Castian woke up gasping, feeling cold sweat trickling down his neck. He brought a hand to his face, trying to push away the images still dancing before his eyes.

"They're just dreams," he tried to tell himself. But deep down, he knew they were more than that. They were omens.

The camp buzzed with activity. Blacksmiths sharpened blades, archers checked their quivers, messengers ran between tents carrying orders. The preparation for battle was chaotic, but there was an underlying order, a determination that united everyone present. Every warrior knew this could be the battle that decided everyone's fate.

Mei Lin and Li Wei were gathered near an improvised altar, studying the Celestial Pearl. The jewel emitted a soft glow, pulsing like a living heart.

"I feel like it's testing us," said Mei, touching the artifact's cold surface. "As if it's judging whether we are worthy to use it."

Li Wei raised an eyebrow.
"Objects don't have a will of their own, Mei."

"Some do," she replied, enigmatic.

Castian approached them, his eyes fixed on the Pearl.
"Is it ready?"

Mei took a deep breath.
"Ready, yes. But that doesn't mean it will be easy."

"It never is," Castian replied with a half-smile.

He looked at the jewel, feeling the weight of his responsibility. The Celestial Pearl was powerful but also dangerous. Its use could secure victory, but it could also cost the life of whoever activated it. Castian knew he was willing to pay that price, but he also knew he couldn't do it alone.

"We need to make sure everything is perfect," he said, looking at Mei and Li Wei. "We can't afford to make mistakes."

Mei nodded.
"I'll do everything I can to ensure the activation is safe. But you need to be prepared for what comes after."

Li Wei placed a hand on Castian's shoulder.
"We are all with you. No matter what happens, we will fight together."

The warriors gathered for a final speech. Castian climbed onto a raised rock and looked at his companions. Every face reflected determination, fear, and hope. He felt the weight of responsibility on his shoulders, but this time, he wasn't alone.

"Many of us have lost everything to Feng," he began. "He burned our homes, killed our families, and tried to break us. But we are here, stronger than ever. Tonight, we march into battle, not as victims, but as those who will change the fate of this world."

The warriors raised their weapons, war cries echoing through the valley. The moment had arrived.

With the Celestial Pearl in hand and his allies by his side, Castian led the march toward the fortress. The fate of the rebellion would be decided that night. Every step was an affirmation of their determination, every breath a promise that they would not rest until Feng's tyranny was defeated.

As they walked, Castian looked toward the horizon, where the fortress stood imposingly against the night sky. He knew the approaching battle would be the hardest of his life, but he also knew he wasn't alone. With Mei, Li Wei, Jiang, and all the others by his side, he felt a spark of hope that hadn't existed for a long time.

The fate of the world was in their hands, and he was ready to face it.
