Chapter 49
The police officer's eyes shifted between the three people with confusion, thinking what a juicy piece of gossip he'd stumbled upon today. The person claiming to be the boss's wife wasn't actually the boss's wife, and the one accused of theft was the real Mrs. Morgan.
However, these wealthy young men's private lives were none of their business - their job was to handle cases.
The officer suppressed his curiosity and asked Sarah, "Your mother's belongings..."
He was cut off mid-sentence by William, "What belongings? Sarah, isn't your mom doing just fine at home?"
The police didn't need to ask anything more. Simply put, this was a dispute between the other woman and the legal wife. Even wise judges couldn't settle family matters, especially when they involved the CEO of the Morgan Group.
It was better to let them handle this internally.
"If you have no further questions, we'll be leaving now."
William nodded politely, "Thank you for your trouble."
As the police left, they glanced at Ava with sympathy.
"Ms. Davis, please take better care of your mother's belongings and don't lose them again."
Sarah's face turned green with anger. Wasn't that basically saying she had stolen Ava's mother's belongings? How could the police say such a thing?
William had only heard about the ring and didn't know what this talk of belongings was about.
"Belongings?"
He looked at Ava, waiting for her answer.
Ava took out her mother's necklace and held it in her palm.
"My mother's necklace was in Sarah's drawer. She told me to get it myself, and I did open her drawer and take it without permission."
At this point, even as slow as he was, William understood how the police got involved.
He stared at Sarah in disbelief, his eyes full of disappointment. "Come with me for a moment."
Sarah felt a chill under his gaze.
The two left the office, leaving Ava standing alone.
She raised her left hand to look at the recovered diamond ring, feeling bitter. Lost things could be found, but could a lost person come back?
After this incident, Sarah's true colors should be clear to him. She was a bit curious about how William would handle this.
He was naturally domineering, whether in business or life. When he disliked someone, he always confronted them directly. He hated it most when people played tricks right under his nose.
William took Sarah away, and the other office employees gradually returned to their desks.
No one dared gossip anymore. James had sent a warning in the group chat - today's events were to stay buried, and anyone who dared discuss it would be fired immediately.
Life was hard, and no one wanted to lose this job that paid twice as much as the same position at other companies.
People just glanced at the sparkling diamond ring on Ava's ring finger with their peripheral vision as they passed her desk.
With the ring back on Ava's hand, the lie had collapsed on its own. Naturally, no one dared call her a thief anymore, and some even thought her ability to wear that ring meant she had an unusual background.
CEO's Office.
Sarah stood at the door, not daring to move forward. The disgust in William's eyes made her feel like she'd fallen into an ice cave.
That was a look he'd never given her before.
"William, you've misunderstood."
She wanted to explain, but felt she couldn't justify herself.
"Do you wear these earrings often?"
William's large hand touched her earlobe. Sarah couldn't help but tremble slightly. Her tense heart finally relaxed, like winter snow beginning to melt, dripping and dropping into tears as she sobbed pitifully.
"William, you scared me just now."
William suddenly applied a bit of force with his hand. Sarah suddenly felt pain in her ear, and when she looked up, the pearl earring was already in William's palm.
"Answer my question. Do you wear these earrings often?"
Sarah looked at him through teary eyes, not understanding why he cared so much about these earrings. Last time too, he had taken them off and questioned her for ages.
William's expression was really bad.
She obediently nodded, her just-relaxed heart tightening again.
William disgustedly threw the earring into the trash can, as if holding it one more second would dirty his hands.
"Don't do those lowdown things anymore. My business with her doesn't allow others to interfere. If I find out anyone has done anything to hurt Ava again, you know what kind of person I am."
Sarah felt cold all over, hearing his words.
They had already signed divorce papers, yet he was still willing to stand up for her. So what was she?
"William, are you still going to marry me?"
She couldn't help asking.
William coldly lifted his eyelids. "The law doesn't allow bigamy."
One sentence crushed all her hopes underfoot.
She had returned to the country with a goal, and before she came back, he had been full of anticipation too.
She thought she'd finally gotten through the hardest part of their long-distance relationship, so she hid from him that her health had mostly recovered, wanting to make him feel more sorry for her and quickly divorce Ava.
But now, how could he say such heartless words?
At this moment, her tears flowed like a broken dam.
"What about that night?"
William rubbed his temples, feeling a headache. He'd been thinking for so long and hadn't come up with a good way to resolve that matter. Now that she brought it up, she clearly wanted an explanation.
And he had promised to give her one.
Now what she wanted, he probably didn't want to give anymore.
"Sarah, I can give you whatever you want - cars, money, houses, just name it."
Sarah couldn't believe her ears.
There was a saying in wealthy circles: you can want his money, want him as a person, even want his heart, but the one thing you can't want is a title.
She now understood this deeply.
He really wasn't planning to divorce anymore.
William probably felt he owed the woman before him something, so his tone softened.
"Go back and think it over. Don't do foolish things that make everyone uncomfortable again."
Sarah left the CEO's office like her soul had been extracted. The man she'd loved for years was now only willing to give her money. She couldn't accept it.
Ava thought William would fire Sarah. After all, the Morgan Group had strict hiring standards and didn't accept employees with blemishes on their record.
Seeing Sarah return to her desk as if nothing had happened, she knew he had gone soft on Sarah.
He tolerated everything about Sarah without limit, even something like Sarah arranging for someone to rape his own wife.
What place did first love hold in a man's heart? Even knowing she'd done something against humanity, he was still willing to take her side.
Ava's heart shattered into pieces again. She couldn't help thinking - if Sarah came to take her life, would he be able to smooth that over too?
At noon, the butler Jeremy came to deliver food again.
Neither had much appetite today, each eating a few bites while lost in thought.
William stared at the dish on his plate that tasted good but whose original ingredients were unrecognizable. "Jeremy, don't trouble yourself anymore. There are plenty of restaurants near the company."
Ava thought he didn't want to eat food from the Morgan Mansion - he just didn't want to eat with her.
"Jeremy, don't bring food anymore."
Jeremy gave a fake smile. "Howard is just worried you won't eat well, and afraid the food outside isn't clean and will upset your stomachs."
William rubbed his nose, and two streams of hot liquid flowed from his nostrils. He instinctively tilted his head back, tasting sweetness in his throat.
Jeremy hurriedly helped him get tissues.
"William, you have a nosebleed."
William took the tissue, and Jeremy quickly cleared the leftovers from the table. By the time William reacted, Jeremy had already removed everything and cleaned the table.
"William, the weather's been dry lately. Drink more water. If there's nothing else, I'll head out now - Mr. Howard Morgan is calling for me."
Jeremy found an excuse and escaped quickly.
Ava was about to leave, too. Her hand reached the door, and another hand reached over her head and landed on the door.
The glass door that had just opened a crack was pushed closed again.
