Chapter 168
Ava opened her eyes and saw the familiar surroundings and Lily's smiling face.
"What time is it?" She asked.
"It's 1:30 in the afternoon now. You slept for over three hours."
Lily brought her a glass of warm water.
Ava's mind raced as she recalled being carried back by him. She looked around and didn't see William, which made her feel much more relaxed.
Lily smiled, "Mr. Morgan had something at the company and left. He told me to wipe you down to help lower your fever. Please take your temperature first. If you don't have a fever, we won't need to do that."
Ava felt much better physically. Based on her own judgment, the fever should have broken. What made her uncomfortable now was being covered in sweat, with her clothes sticking to her body.
She lifted the blanket and saw herself in this nightgown, her face gradually turning red. She clearly remembered not changing clothes before falling asleep.
Lily had no idea what she was thinking at that moment.
"Mrs. Morgan, please take your temperature."
Ava took the thermometer and checked. As she expected, the fever was gone.
Lily smiled cheerfully.
"Mrs. Morgan is recovering well. You must be hungry, right? I'll go get you some porridge."
William had an important meeting. Throughout the entire meeting, his phone wasn't on silent. When it rings, he answers it right in front of all the executives.
"Lily, how is she?"
Whatever was said on the other end made William's expression visibly darken.
Everyone in the meeting room didn't dare to breathe, as the heavy atmosphere hit them.
William said into the phone, "Let her do what she wants."
After speaking, he threw the phone on the table, startling everyone.
He was such a fool for caring. If he worried about her again, he'd be an absolute idiot!
The rest of the meeting didn't go smoothly. Everyone got scolded, and the proposals were criticized as worthless.
James was sweating nervously, wondering what Ava had done to upset him this time. They were the ones suffering for it.
Meanwhile, Ava changed her clothes and called a car at the door to go back to her rented place. She got upset when she saw the text message on her phone - a threatening message from an unknown number.
[You little bitch, just wait and see. Don't ever leave your house if you dare.]
Ava silently thought this message must be from Sarah and Nola—the tone was exactly the same.
Her heart jumped, and she immediately contacted the bodyguards she borrowed from Michael to follow her. It wasn't convenient to talk here. She needed to get back to her own place.
After getting home, she sent that unknown number to Jack, asking him to check if it was a burner phone bought by Nola or Sarah.
Less than ten minutes later, Jack called.
"Ava, you guessed right. That phone number was bought by Nola."
"Has she been up to anything lately?"
"She's been in close contact with a man named Gregory recently. As for what they're plotting, I don't know yet. Should I keep watching her?"
"Yes, watch her."
After hanging up, Ava transferred some money to Jack with the note 'service fee.'
At that moment, a man standing by the window was watching everything through the glass while listening to his assistant's report.
"Mr. Davis, we've questioned the two men following Ms. Davis. It was a misunderstanding."
Robert took a drag from his cigarette and exhaled a stream of smoke.
"What do you mean?"
"Those two men are bodyguards Ms. Davis hired to protect her. Our people mistook them for bad guys and caught them."
Robert raised an eyebrow, looking a bit surprised.
"Let them go immediately. Take care of it properly, and don't let a word get out."
"Yes!"
The assistant didn't leave after speaking. Robert asked while holding his cigarette, "Something else?"
The assistant cleared his throat, as if preparing himself for what he was about to say. The topic was really too heavy.
"Mr. Davis, we found something."
"Speak."
"Your aunt Nancy signed an organ donation form before she died, and her heart was transplanted to the daughter Steven had with his mistress. So, your aunt's death might really be suspicious, not just a simple car accident."
As he spoke, the assistant's voice got lower and lower. He knew Robert's anger was maxed out, and he was afraid Robert might set the house on fire in his rage.
Robert's expression froze. A few seconds later, he crushed the cigarette butt and threw it into the ashtray with full force.
"What rights does the mistress's daughter have? How is she worthy?"
The assistant trembled in fear.
"We haven't found concrete evidence yet. There are two possibilities: either the killer is too good at covering their tracks and erased all the clues, or the car accident really was just an accident."
Robert snorted, clearly not believing it was just an accident.
"Watch them closely!"
At the hospital, Sarah and Nola were chatting in the ward, completely unaware that many people were watching them.
Sarah leaned against the headboard, eating fruit. William had arranged for someone to stay with her 24/7, supposedly to take care of her, but to her it felt more like surveillance.
He only allowed Steven and Nola to visit the ward for one hour each day, like visiting an inmate, with fixed visiting hours.
Sarah was really fed up.
"Dad, Mom, how about I leave the hospital tomorrow? I'll say I'm better. I'll go crazy if this continues."
Steven was still worried about William bringing in an expert to examine her. The family hadn't come up with a solution yet, and there were only a few days left before William's deadline. If they couldn't think of an effective plan in these few days, they'd just have to prepare themselves for the storm.
At this moment, only Nola remained calm, holding a fruit plate and feeding Sarah.
"Sarah, let me tell you: when you're pregnant, you should eat more grapes. The baby will have big eyes."
Sarah stuffed her mouth full.
"Mom, the grapes you bought today are really sweet."
Steven was going crazy with frustration. At a time like this, all they knew was eat, eat, eat!
"Stop eating and think about what to do."
Sarah wiped her mouth.
"Dad, when William brings that expert here, just have someone cause some kind of accident along the way. I don't think it's that hard."
Nola smiled with relief.
"You just take care of yourself. You don't need to worry about the rest as a pregnant woman. I'm here."
She didn't spell it out, but reassured Sarah with confidence. She'd take care of her own daughter—everything was already arranged. Men were unreliable, but she had her mother.
Steven snorted.
"Do you think William is an idiot? After going through all that trouble to bring an expert from Lumaria, would he just let something happen to them?"
This time, Sarah realized how serious things were.
"What do we do then, Dad?"
William really wasn't that easy to fool. She suddenly felt like she didn't have many good days left. The recent 24-hour nursing care and the nanny's three meals a day were like her death sentence. When he learned the truth, she'd have to pay it all back.
And even worse.
She didn't even know what awaited her. She knew William's methods—he hated being deceived the most.
Thinking about this, Sarah felt a chill run down her spine.
"Dad, think of something."
