Chapter 164
Steven had lost yesterday's kind, fatherly appearance. Instead, his face was fierce and menacing, not to mention Nola, who looked like she wanted to eat someone alive.
"Ava, didn't you promise me you'd go with William today to process the divorce? Where the hell have you been fooling around?"
Steven launched into a barrage of questions right off the bat. Early this morning, he'd found out that William was at the company and had no plans to leave. He guessed that Ava had been brushing him off yesterday and hadn't put the divorce on the agenda at all.
Nola cursed from the side,
"I think you, you little bitch, just want to cling to my son-in-law. I advise you to wise up and have some shame. Holding on tight to something that's not yours won't do any good. Mr. Morgan and my daughter, Sarah, are a match made in heaven. It was you, you bitch, who showed up and forcibly broke them apart. Otherwise, my grandchild would have been born already, instead of only being conceived now."
Ava wiped her wet hair and asked,
"Can you have some shame? Being a homewrecker is your family tradition, right?"
Before Nola could explode, Steven erupted first,
"You disrespectful dead girl, do you know any shame? Is this how that woman Nancy taught you?"
Ava was now soaked through, cold to the bone. She lifted her eyelids and looked at Steven coldly, remembering that it was also a rainy day before Grandma passed away. She had knelt outside Steven's newly moved-to villa for a whole day, begging him to go see Grandma. How heartless had he been then?
Now he dared to talk to her about shame. People shouldn't be so hypocritical.
"Steven, do you know that today is my grandmother's death anniversary? In the three years since she passed, you don't even know where her grave is, do you?"
Steven's expression froze. He obviously didn't know about this. Being questioned by Ava to his face made him lose face.
"Don't change the subject. Why didn't you go get divorced?"
Ava scoffed,
"Steven, do you want to listen to what you're saying?"
Even if she divorced William, it would be because of relationship problems, not because she was stupid enough to listen to Steven's nonsense and immediately go get divorced to make way for Sarah.
Steven's eyes turned cold,
"You dead girl, you lied to me?"
Ava looked at the furious Steven and Nola. Her gloomy mood after visiting the grave immediately lifted quite a bit.
"Sarah wants the position of Mrs. Morgan, but I won't give it to her. If she's capable, let's see who lives longer. As long as I'm alive, she'll be a homewrecker."
"You, you, you..."
Nola couldn't hold back anymore and stepped forward, about to strike.
"William, you're here!"
Ava tilted her head to the side and changed her tone.
Hearing her call William, Nola and Steven immediately cowered, retracting their claws and putting on professional fake smiles as they looked in the direction of Ava's gaze.
At this moment, Ava had already taken the opportunity to walk away, putting a safe distance between them.
"That damn bitch, as cunning as her mother!"
Nola's eyes showed a vicious look, her face full of murderous intent.
Steven stamped his feet in anger.
Nola complained,
"I told you this bitch was unreliable and not worth trusting, but you insisted you'd made a deal with her. Now what do we do?"
Steven's nostrils flared, absolutely furious. His mind was in turmoil right now, and hearing Nola's questioning, he didn't give her a pleasant look.
"You're asking me? Who should I ask?"
Nola smiled eerily,
"If you have no way, I can only use my own methods. I won't allow my daughter to walk the same path I walked."
The taste of waiting for a man in a house he provided while guarding an illegitimate daughter—even after several decades, she still remembered it vividly.
The neighbors' gossip, the teachers' home visits, and the man's hot and cold treatment had once driven her into depression. At least she had endured those bitter days and become his legal wife.
She would never allow her daughter to suffer this way again. Those days of being hidden away, unable to see the light, were not fit for human beings.
If Steven were useless, then she, as the mother, would clear the obstacles for her daughter.
"I have something to do, so I'm heading back. You go keep Sarah company."
Nola collected her broken emotions, as if she had made a big decision.
Steven tilted his head,
"You're already in the courtyard, and you're not going to see Sarah?"
Nola said, "I think I forgot to turn off the stove with the soup I was cooking, and the maid took the day off. The house might catch fire."
Steven said urgently, "Then hurry back!"
Nola rushed out of the hospital. Steven looked at her panicked back and cursed,
"Useless woman, can't even cook soup properly."
Ava returned to Howard's ward, soaking wet, which broke Howard's heart.
"Child, how could you go out without even taking an umbrella? Go change into clean clothes quickly, or you'll catch a cold."
Ava found a set of clothes from the suitcase on the floor and went into the bathroom to shower.
William came in just as he saw her back.
"Grandpa, how are you feeling today?"
Howard glared at him, clearly not wanting to deal with him. But William came twice a day to make his presence known, and scolding didn't work. He didn't know how the Morgan family produced someone so thick-skinned.
Howard snorted through his nose,
"What are you here for again?"
William rubbed the back of his neck, a bit helpless. In this world, only Howard left him completely at a loss. When Howard threw a tantrum, his pettiness was smaller than a needle point.
"Grandpa, are you still mad at me?"
Speaking of being angry, Howard wanted to lecture him.
"Tell me, what have you been busy with lately? So busy you don't even come home?"
William's eyebrows raised slightly. He thought to himself that the little woman had been complaining about him to Howard again. He had only slept in the office for a few days, and it had already reached Howard's ears.
He reported all the company's main tasks in detail, hoping to gain Howard's understanding. Unexpectedly, Howard curled his lips disdainfully.
"That's all you're capable of? These little things can keep you so busy you don't come home for days?"
Howard had already had someone investigate William sleeping in the office privately. This kid really hadn't gone home for several days, leaving his wife alone at home.
What woman would want to live like this with him?
After asking, Howard scolded again,
"You really haven't improved at all!"
William was rendered speechless by the rebuke. Indeed, those matters weren't enough to keep him too busy to go home. He hadn't gone home the past few days, not because he couldn't spare the time, but because he didn't dare to. He didn't know what mindset to use to face the woman he felt guilty toward.
He had his own struggles, too.
Hiding in the office, he wanted to calm down and sort things out.
After all, Sarah was pregnant with his child.
This news came too suddenly, disrupting all his plans for the future.
He wanted to be an irresponsible man, but he was also afraid Sarah would seek death, harming two lives. In that case, he would never be able to forgive himself for the rest of his life.
Sarah was the woman who had saved his life, regardless of her own safety!
In the bathroom.
Ava took a hot shower. The sound of running water prevented her from hearing the conversation outside, and she didn't know about William's arrival.
As she turned off the water and prepared to dry herself, her foot slipped, causing her whole body to fall backward. Fortunately, the bathroom in the ward was small, so her head hit the wall directly, and her back also leaned against it completely, preventing her from falling.
A dull thud!
Her head hurt so much!
She leaned against the wall to recover. That impact just now had made her see stars and feel dizzy.
Then she heard a click as the door was opened from the outside. Ava's heart suddenly panicked, and she looked toward the door.
