Chapter 101
Looking at Lewis's miserable expression, William's fist didn't swing up.
Within a few sentences, Emily hurried over to catch up. Seeing her own brother's dark face, her gaze swept around the three of them. Not knowing what they had been talking about just a second ago, she vaguely felt the atmosphere was off.
"William, you're here?"
Emily only greeted William. She had no desire to acknowledge that so-called Ava.
William grunted in response, his tone cocky as he scolded her,
"Don't you see Ava is here too? Why aren't you greeting her?"
In her rush, Emily almost blurted out what was on her mind, "I don't want to..."
After pausing, she reluctantly said hello.
Only then did William's stern face relax a bit.
After Emily finished her greeting, her eyes were glued straight to Lewis,
"Lewis, if I'd known it was you, I would have gone to the Jones Media to find you ages ago."
Lewis hadn't yet recovered from his heartbreak and didn't react right away,
"Huh? What would you want me for?"
"Oh, stop it."
Emily said coquettishly, thinking to herself: That night at the charity gala, I thought you looked so distinguished. Who would have thought we'd have this connection? If I'd known, would I have waited for you to come propose?
She had searched everywhere but couldn't find out which company he was from. Unfortunately, James had taken the guest list that night, and no matter how much she pestered him, he wouldn't hand it over.
Lewis's eyes unconsciously drifted to Ava again. The more he looked, the more his heart ached.
The four of them stood there awkwardly for a few seconds, each with their own thoughts.
"Lewis, let's go play golf. I'll call the butler and have him clear the course."
Lewis had no interest, but with William present, he didn't dare refuse directly. Seeing she couldn't persuade Lewis, Emily turned her attention to William,
"William, come with us."
Emily tugged at William's sleeve, winking and hinting in every way possible, begging him to help.
William had work scheduled for today. After skipping work for several days, he had a lot piled up and planned to go to the office to work overtime after breakfast. He hadn't expected this mess to pop up as soon as he opened his eyes.
On second thought, if Emily kept that annoying Lewis occupied, he wouldn't have time to think about his wife.
"Let's go, play for a bit?"
Lewis sighed. Since he was already here, he might as well make the best of it. It was his own fault for not understanding the situation and begging his dad to come propose with such fanfare. He could only bear this mistake himself.
He glanced at Emily, thinking: I need to find a chance to make things clear with her. This rich young lady doesn't seem like someone who'd let her family arrange her marriage. The engagement needs to be called off by this girl. If I'm the one to bring it up, it'll be bad for her reputation.
"Let's go."
Emily eagerly walked beside Lewis. When they reached the garage, she skillfully opened his passenger door and climbed in, completely at ease.
Lewis got in the car and waited for William's car to leave first. He'd never been to the Morgan Family's golf course and needed William to lead the way.
"Lewis, help me fasten my seatbelt."
Emily had specially dressed up before going out. She pouted her pink lips with a coquettish look.
Lewis glanced sideways and saw Emily looking at him expectantly. His mind quickly filled with images of Ava's face, cold and distant toward him.
He rubbed his temples, feeling like he was being pathetic, and fell for someone who ignored him.
"Do it yourself."
He tossed out the words.
Emily complained playfully, "Oh, come on, this is my first time in your car, and I can't find where it is. Help me out!"
Emily didn't know how thrilled she was to see him today. A few days ago, when she and her parents came back from the suburbs, she heard that Howard had arranged a marriage for her while she was away. Over this matter, she'd thrown a tantrum and hadn't come downstairs to eat for several days.
Who knew heaven would give her such a huge surprise - the fiancé Howard had chosen for her was actually the man she'd fallen for at first sight. This was even more coincidental than the novels she read.
She firmly believed that she and this man were meant to be together, that their connection was destined by heaven.
Lewis gripped the steering wheel with both hands, looked at Emily again, and remembered the parent-teacher conferences from childhood when William's whole family would come. That time, this Emily was still being held in her mother's arms.
No matter how he looked at it, he felt she was just an immature little girl, like his own sister. The thought of being with her made him uncomfortable.
He unbuckled his own seatbelt and leaned over to hook her seatbelt, deliberately avoiding the girl's body.
Click - the seatbelt locked into the buckle.
"Got it? Do it yourself next time."
Emily nodded with satisfaction.
By this time, William's car had already left the villa. He started the engine and lightly pressed the gas pedal to follow.
The Morgan Group's golf course was located in the suburbs. It was a piece of land William had bought on a whim, where he built a small villa for vacation getaways.
After it was built, he'd only come to inspect it once. Emily really liked it here and would come stay for a few days from time to time.
They handed the car to the valet, and the four of them walked onto the grass. Everything in sight was a soothing green, and the air was much fresher than in the city.
Used to the fast pace of city life, time here seemed to be playing in slow motion.
Ava felt completely relaxed. This was her first time here. She looked around, east and west, unconsciously wanting to stretch.
William looked at the person beside him and asked,
"Want to try it later?"
Ava said timidly, "I don't know how..."
"That's why I'm here - I guarantee you'll learn."
Emily lifted her eyelids to glance at Ava, showing a disdainful expression. She thought: That country bumpkin definitely doesn't know how. I'll show her a thing or two later.
"Ava, let's have a little competition?"
As soon as Ava heard this, she knew what Emily was scheming. Emily wouldn't miss any opportunity to humiliate her.
Besides, she really didn't know how to play.
She admitted frankly, "I don't know how to play this yet. Wait until I learn a bit first, then I'll compete with you."
Emily snorted coldly. Wasn't this basically insulting her? Learn on the spot and then compete with her? She'd been playing golf since childhood. This woman's words were way too arrogant.
"Fine, let's compete. Who's afraid of who?"
Today, she had to teach this woman a lesson, or she wouldn't know her place.
Ava cast a pleading look at William. William had already grabbed a club, ready to be her personal instructor.
"Ava, come here."
Ava obediently walked over. A club was placed in her hands, and the next second, William embraced her from behind.
She looked back. William had one hand on his hip, his eyes on her lower body.
She'd rushed out this morning and randomly grabbed a shirt and a short skirt from the closet. She hadn't expected there'd be sports activities.
This outfit was fine for playing golf, except when bending over, he could see that stretch of pale thigh, which he wasn't happy about - especially with Lewis around today.
"Wait a moment."
He let go of her and walked to the rest area to make a phone call.
Emily looked smug,
"Ava, my brother doesn't seem too willing to teach you. When he taught Sarah last time, he didn't bail out like this!"
