Chapter 50: Tangled Sanctuary

Chapter 50: Tangled Sanctuary
AVA'S POV

The lock groaned as the key turned reluctantly inside it, the clash of metal more rasping than it had to be. Home. The sound clung in the air like a dry husk without sense or meaning, a cruel joke jeered at my cost. I pushed open the door and stepped into the dark, stale quiet. Old books and lemon polish stank up to meet me, but it wasn't comforting. If anything, it mocked me… a taste for something I could never have.

I shut the door and rested my weight against it, letting the chill of the wood dig into my back. It was solid, still, but did not give me any support. My knees still went weak and I collapsed to the floor. The shock ran through my skeleton. My bag fell beside me, opening halfway on the floor, but I didn't even try to shut it. It was one more item I couldn't possibly carry.

Silence. But not really.

My mind was not silent… there was always a grinding noise.

Victoria's voice was the most piercing, sour and slashing, slashing deep and then slashing some more: "Ravaged." "Hollowed out." "Liability." "Distraction." Each word was a shard of glass rubbed slow over open wounds. They did not just hurt… they buried themselves in the vulnerable places of me, chanting until I wanted to yank them out.

And they didn't come alone. They wrapped themselves around with spectral touches… Julian's gaze, searing metal and steel, holding me down in the office as if already pinned down by him. Marcus's hands, heavy with passion, half-soothe and half-possess. Caleb's grasp, furious and wild.

My skin crawled, remembering it all. A chill ran down me… half repulsion, half something a lot more dangerous. My chest tightened to consider how quickly disgust and desire could flip places.

How? The question screamed inside of me, but there was no answer. How do I crave their touch and loathe it all the same? How do I crave the connection they give me, yet know it's also the suffocating collar around my neck? It was like holding fire… knowing it would burn and powerless to stop despite it.

Julian's strangling control.

Marcus's smothering guilt.

Caleb's devouring intensity.

They were pulling me apart, strand by strand, so I couldn't tell what belonged to me and what belonged to them.

My phone jolted roughly against the hardwood, and I leapt. The screen flared, blinding in half-dark. A text message.

JULIAN: I’d like to speak? My office? Tonight? Tomorrow?

The words hung in the air like lead. I could sense the truth concealed within them… His office. His time. His terms. Always a request made with an undercurrent of demand. The memory of his glare… possessive, knowing… grasped my belly into a hard ball.

Not tonight. Not with Victoria's venom still running through my blood. Not with the memory of three sets of hands still fresh on my skin. I waved the notification away. A small act of rebellion, barely anything at all, but it felt like rebellion.

The silence returned, heavier than ever. It pressed down upon me until I thought I would drown. Something… someone… real was what I required. Someone outside of Julian's formulas, Marcus's guilt, the suffocating walls of that estate.

And yet, it was Caleb's name that I scrolled for with trembling fingers. Caleb… the one who is branded like I am branded. The one with whom my anarchy would flow. I struck call before I could retract it.

It rang once. Twice. My throat closed.

"Ava?" His voice was gritty, either from sleep or something more substantial. As soon as he heard me breathe, it dried up with alarm. "What's wrong?"

He'd picked up on it… the quiver in my voice that I hadn't meant to let slip.

The way he sounded… his voice alone… loosened something within me. "Caleb…" I crushed his name in my voice. "I just… I can't." My hand flew up to cover my mouth, but the sob pushed through anyway, raspy and raw. "I can't keep going like this. The secrets, the lies, the pain… " Words poured out like blood from a torn flesh. "It's tearing me apart, Caleb. I feel like I'm… dissolving. Like I'm vanishing into this nightmare they've constructed."

For a moment, there was just the breathing. And then: "Ava." His tone shifted… softer, but with that fierce, shielded heat only he could generate. "Where are you? Are you okay?"

"Home," I whispered, wiping my cheeks with the heel of my hand. "I'm… safe. Physically." Swallowing. "But I'm drowning, Caleb. Victoria. what she said today. Julian's looks. Marcus, the guilt. My mother. The expectations. it's all too much."

I could almost envision him pacing, jaw set, wanting only to make it all right but knowing he couldn't… not here, not now.

"You're not going anywhere," he said finally. It was a command, not a vow. "Not on my watch." Another pause. "We need to talk. Properly. Somewhere outside of them."

I laughed once, coldly. "There's no where, Caleb. Not with Julian's eyes everywhere. Not with…

"There is," he cut in. "The Verdant Sanctuary. Private gardens. No cell phones, no recording device, no surveillance. You need a special ticket for a time slot entry. It's quiet. Untouchable."

Quiet was a word that didn't taste right in my mouth. Alien. Yearned-for.

"No cell phones?" I echoed, hardly daring to believe it.

"Nothing but you, me, and a hell of a lot of green," he said back, voice dropping, nearly intimate. "Tomorrow. After work. I'll send the ticket. Just… come."

It was foolish… going to meet him in secret like this. If Julian discovered… But the lure of real quiet, of a space unpenetrated by their ceaseless grasp, was too strong to deny.

"Okay," I said softly. "Tomorrow."

“Good.” The relief in his voice was unguarded. “Breathe until then, Ava. I’ve got you.”

The line went dead. The apartment’s stillness returned, but something had shifted… it felt less like a weight, more like a pause.

My phone pinged almost immediately. An email: Verdant Sanctuary Entry – Reserved for Ava Thompson. Attached was a digital pass, the emblem a tangle of green leaves and sunlight.

I stared at it, letting the color infiltrate. It was alive.

Victoria's words still hung in the air. Julian's message still sat on my phone, unread. The touch of Marcus's hands and Caleb's grip still clung to my skin. But now, alongside the noise, was one strand… thin, fragile, but real.

Sanctuary.

I let the word swell. Then, in small increments, took breath.

Tomorrow.
