Up In Flames
Up In Flames
RYDER
Hearing the full story makes me sick to my stomach.
These sons of bitches...how could they?
What kind of animals are they?
I don't take my eyes off Dorson, or rather, Sean. Alpha Dorson was killed by his own hand. He and the guy we all thought was Wilson are brothers, and they were raised by the real Alpha Dorson of the Moon Rose pack and his mate, Yarina.
No wonder they looked alike.
Moon Rose was truly a place where Nocturns could live in peace, and the real Alpha Dorson was always welcoming to them. When they heard that there was a war against every Alpha who wanted to oppress Nocturns, he decided to join the battle, but Sean here and his brother, Damien, decided that it was an opportunity for them to rise, and so they killed the man who treated them as if they were his own children along with his Luna and his sons, and they came here impersonating them.
Their goal is to ensure that every pack is run by a Nocturn. Well, that was the initial plan. Now, they want to destroy the whole pack system and create a new one from scratch. Of course, Sean here would be the King. A Nocturn King.
Everyone else would be submissive to him.
But of course, Ray would serve as a Beta of sorts. An underling who would keep the people in check for him, since he has no biological way of doing that. It's a flawed plan from the start because it still puts an Alphaborn in charge.
And they somehow chose the worst person for the job.
Ray Laws would never bow to them. They'd put the entire werewolf world in his hands and then, there'd be nowhere to run from him. Every wolf would be submissive to him, and it would be hell on earth. I'm sure of it.
I shake my head at Sean, who's trying to adjust himself into a better position. "This is the most pathetic garbage I've ever heard. You really didn't think this through, did you? You don't even know Ray Laws or what he's capable of. He made you all a few pathetic promises and you fell right for it."
He grits out, "It's better than what we had with you."
"How could you let your greed cloud your judgment the way it did?" I question, stepping closer to him. "You had a wonderful thing going on and you ruined everything. You don't care about the other Nocturns. You only care about yourself. How can you think you're worthy to lead with this mentality? Why do you even care about being king when you don't give a shit about anyone else?"
"You don't know what it's like," he claims through his teeth. "You don't know what it's like to have nothing and be nothing for as long as you can remember. We always knew we were below them, and that there were places where being a Nocturn was enough to get you killed! You led a privileged life. You don't qualify to pass any judgment!"
"You were better off than thousands of other Nocturns!" I yell. "People were getting killed, and yet you were raised under your Alpha's roof! How can you be so fucking spoiled? I know exactly what it's like. My mate is a Nocturn. I know what we went through. Don't fucking sit there and act like you understand anything! You're the one who doesn't know anything about suffering and pain!"
I back away. This is a mess. All of this is so fucking terrible. We should've questioned these things sooner. Investigated more. We trusted these crazy people blindly and now look at where we all are.
How could we have fucking guessed?
Now that I know what their plan is, it's easy for me to know how to act.
I wait for the first explosive to go off, but Finn's taking a lot of time and it makes me wonder if something's wrong. Soon, Sean will recover from the silver and he'll try to attack me. I could stab him again, but I'd rather not do that until I absolutely have to.
The feel of his blood between my fingers is making me sick.
"Now will you release him?" he has the audacity to ask.
I stare at the top of his head for the longest time. Just then, the ground beneath my feet seems to shake and Sean exclaims in alarm. His eyes meet mine and I see it all come together right in his eyes. He lunges at me with no warning at all, shifting midair, and I stick the knife into his underbelly. He keeps on attacking me, though, trying to go for my face.
I sink the knife deeper into his flesh until my entire hand is inside of him, twisting it.
Only then does he stop.
His entire weight is on top of me and because of the awkwardness of the position, I have to fight to crawl out from under him. In the meantime, another explosive goes off. Soon, this whole place will be up in flames and if I'm not out of here by then, it'll be too late.
A few seconds later, I'm out in the corridor. It's still empty, but I try not to focus on that. The part of the house I just left explodes behind me. I race toward the stairs, practically flying down them.
I reach the exit right on time.
I throw myself on the steps and both Finn and Mell approach me. There are a few people behind them, all of them staring at the house with wide eyes. I move to stand, ignoring the pain from the impact, and we hurry toward the gate.
"Is it done?" Mell asks desperately.
I meet her gaze and nod. Finn tells me that there's an emergency car parked in Ironclaw U and we'll have to reach it to get out of here. Shifting is the only way to make it there faster. We can't alarm everyone.
By the time they figure out what happened, we have to be on the way to Moon Rose.
In the car, I let my thoughts drift to Aria. My heart tightens in my chest and my wolf howls inside my head. I'm so fucking filled with worry that I don't know if it's my own or if it's traveling down the bond.
Please, be safe, baby.
I'm on my way.
Just hold on for me. Please.
