Chapter 109

Chapter 109

One week later, Diana was discharged.

The bullet wound in her arm had healed enough for the stitches to come out. Her stomach, monitored daily by Liam's remote medical team, showed continued improvement — the calcification around the tumor margins had progressed further, and her blood panels were trending steadily upward.

The baby was healthy. Five weeks along now, with a strong heartbeat.

On the morning she left the hospital, the sky over Sunrise City was clear for the first time in weeks.

Diana carried Holden on her hip and walked through the hospital's back entrance, where a black SUV was waiting. Lucius sat behind the wheel, grinning.

"Flight's at two," he said. "Passports, visas, medical transfer documents — everything's ready."

Diana buckled Holden into the car seat Lucius had installed. The boy clutched a stuffed dinosaur and babbled contentedly.

"Joanna?" Diana asked as she climbed into the passenger seat.

"Already at the airport. Aubrey tried to follow her. She told him if he showed up at the gate, she'd file a restraining order." Lucius paused. "He showed up anyway. She filed the restraining order."

Diana almost smiled.

"And Edward?"

Lucius's expression softened. "He's at the facility with your mom. He's been overseeing her post-op recovery personally. Diana, he asked me to tell you — he understands. He's not waiting for you. He just wants you to be well."

Diana looked out the window. The city streamed past — glass towers, crowded sidewalks, the river glinting in the sun.

She'd spent the worst years of her life here. But she'd also found the people worth living for.

"Let's go," she said.

The SUV merged onto the highway toward the airport.

Halfway there, Diana's phone buzzed. A message from an unsaved number.

[The old house on the outskirts. The pothos is still alive. Yara says you owe her three months of water bills. — Nicholas]

Diana stared at the message for a long time.

Then she typed back: [Tell Yara I'll wire the money.]

She hesitated, her thumb hovering over the send button. Then she added one more line.

[Thank you for saving him. For saving our son. I won't forget that.]

She hit send, then turned the phone face-down on her lap.

At the airport, Joanna was waiting at the departure gate, wearing oversized sunglasses and clutching a neck pillow like a weapon.

"Finally!" She threw her arms around Diana, careful to avoid her injured arm. "I've been stress-eating airport pretzels for two hours."

She pulled back and looked at Holden, who was studying her with solemn curiosity.

"Oh my God. He has your eyes." Joanna's voice cracked. "Diana, he's beautiful."

"He is."

Joanna wiped her eyes behind the sunglasses and straightened up. "Okay. No more crying. We have a flight to catch and I refuse to board looking like a disaster."

They walked toward the gate together.

Diana paused at the entrance to the jet bridge and looked back one last time.

Through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the terminal, she could see the Sunrise City skyline — The Kennedy Group tower rising above everything else, its glass facade catching the afternoon light.

Somewhere in that building, a man was sitting alone in an office that was too big for one person, reading a two-line text message over and over.

Diana turned away and walked onto the plane.

---

The facility where Gemma was recovering sat on a quiet coastline, hidden behind a grove of cypress trees. The salt air carried through the open windows of the rehabilitation ward, mixing with the faint beep of monitoring equipment.

When Diana walked through the door with Holden in her arms, Gemma was sitting up in bed for the first time, supported by pillows.

She looked fragile — thinner than Diana remembered, her hair streaked with more gray. But her eyes were clear and bright, and when she saw her daughter, her face transformed.

"Diana."

"Mom."

Diana crossed the room and sat on the edge of the bed. Holden squirmed in her arms, reaching for the woman he'd never met.

Gemma took him with trembling hands. The boy settled against her chest without protest, as if he'd always known where he belonged.

"He's heavy," Gemma whispered, tears streaming down her face. "He's so heavy."

"He eats everything," Diana said, laughing through her own tears. "Bananas, rice, the corner of my notebook — everything."

They sat together for a long time, three generations in a small room by the sea, and didn't talk about Nicholas, or Ryder, or any of the darkness that had brought them here.

They just held each other and breathed.

Later, Liam found Diana on the facility's rooftop terrace, watching the sun set over the water.

"Your latest scans came back." He leaned against the railing beside her. "The tumor margins have shrunk another twelve percent. At this rate, we're looking at possible remission within six months."

Diana exhaled slowly. "And the baby?"

"Developing normally. Strong heartbeat. No abnormalities." Liam glanced at her. "You're going to be fine, Diana. Both of you."

She nodded, pressing her hand lightly against her stomach.

"Liam."

"Hm?"

"Why did you help me? From the very beginning. You barely knew me."

Liam was quiet for a moment, watching the waves.

"Because someone helped me once, when I had nothing. When every doctor said I was going to die. A stranger showed up and said, 'I'm going to try anyway.'" He smiled faintly. "That stranger was your mentor. Tristan."

Diana turned to look at him.

"He never told me."

"He wouldn't." Liam pushed off the railing. "Get some rest. You have a long recovery ahead."

He walked back inside, his tall frame silhouetted against the fading light.

Diana stayed on the terrace until the first stars appeared.

For the first time in years, the future didn't feel like a sentence.

It felt like a beginning.

The End

Hey everyone, I'm sorry — some things have come up at home recently, so I haven't had time to keep going. This story will end here for now. Thank you all so much for reading! I'll be back soon.
