Chapter 53 053.
Alyssa

"Alyssa."

I heard Ares's voice behind me.

Deep.

Calm.

The voice that usually made me feel safe but not right now, not after my conversation with his daughter… i didn’t even feel like talking to him now, talk less of looking at him.

I ignored his callings as I kept walking faster now pushing through a side door that led to a quiet garden outside.

He followed me I could hear his footsteps right behind me.

"Alyssa stop," he said.

I spun around to face him all the anger and hurt I had been feeling boiled over.

"Just fuck off Ares!" I yelled my voice shaking.

"Go away! Why don't you go be with your wife? Huh? Why are you always here with me? I never asked for you to be my bodyguard or to come back into my life, I was doing hust fine before you came."

He looked completely lost his face was confused. "My... my wife? Alyssa what are you talking about?"

"Don't play dumb with me Ares, I am not stupid" I screamed. "You lied to me all this time you were still married. How dare you lie to me! How dare you touch me and kiss me and claim me as yours when you belong to someone else"

I was crying now hot angry tears. "If you still want your wife then just go… Go back to her I never asked you to be with me, I refuse... I refuse to be the other woman I am not a homewrecker! I won't be like your child"

He tried to reach for me. "Alyssa please just let me explain—"

"No!" I shouted stepping back from him. "I don't want to hear your explanations I don't want to hear your lies! You had so many chances to tell me that you were still married and then you choose to hide it from me, Why? Why did you lie?"

He ran a hand through his hair, looking frustrated. "Where is all this coming from? Who told you I have a wife?"

"It doesn't matter who told me!" I fired back "What matters is that it's true, You just let me believe you were divorced, you let me get involved in whatever that is going on between me and you" I spat my chests heaving.

"Just tell me why," I whispered my voice breaking. "Why would you lie about something like that?"

"Alyssa listen to me," Ares said, his voice serious. "Isabella and I are divorced, well—"

I shook my head, not wanting to believe him. "You're lying to me Ares!"

"I signed the divorce papers a year ago," he explained his eyes begging me to understand. "I wanted it to be over but Isabella... she refused to sign her part she would not finalize it. She is... difficult and she does not want to let go but in my heart it has been over for a long time. The marriage was dead long before I signed anything."

He tried to step closer. "I should have told you. You are right but it is a messy painful story. I did not want to bring my old baggage to you but all that doesn’t matter Alyssa… you and I—-“

I hugged myself feeling confused and hurt cutting him off "I don't know what to believe anymore. How can I trust you?"

“That’s enough Alyssa! We are not romantically involved… you and I both know that is a no go area for the both of us…”

My heart dropped his words piercing and before I could respond a voice cut me off.

"Ms. White?"

We both turned It was Marcus, he stood there at the garden door looking at us.

Ares and I quickly stepped apart or pretending nothing was wrong as I wiped my tears away fast.

"Yes Marcus?" I said trying to make my voice sound normal.

Marcus looked from me to Ares and back again he looked a little suspicious but he did not ask any questions. "It is time for your speech, Ms. White, the guests are all waiting. They are expecting you at the podium now."

I nodded. "Okay I am coming."

I walked towards Marcus without looking back at Ares I did not give him a single glance.

My heart was still hurting and my mind was full of his words about, of course what did it think?

Love?

I’ll be damned to ever get involved in such, buy deep down Ares words pierced a nail in my heart one I couldn’t pull out.

Was I in love with him?

No!

Certainly not, I could never love again and especially not with Ares Collins.

I followed Marcus back into the bright noisy party leaving Ares and all our problems behind in the garden.
