Chapter 103 Adrian Chooses Transparency

Chapter 103 Adrian Chooses Transparency
It didn’t begin with suspicion.

That was what made it different.

Lila wasn’t looking for lies anymore.

She wasn’t watching Adrian’s phone when it lit up.

She wasn’t reading between his words, searching for hidden meaning.

For the first time in years, she had stopped expecting something to go wrong.

And that was exactly why Adrian chose that moment.

The Envelope

It was a quiet evening.

Elliot was in his room working on his school presentation, small pieces of cardboard and printed diagrams spread across the floor.

Lila stood in the kitchen, slicing vegetables for dinner when Adrian knocked.

Not texted.

Not called.

Knocked.

She opened the door.

He stood there holding a thin envelope.

“Hi,” she said.

“Hi.”

He didn’t step inside immediately.

“I need to talk to you about something.”

The tone caught her attention.

Not urgent.

Not defensive.

Just… deliberate.

“Okay,” she said, stepping aside.

“Come in.”

No Pressure

They sat at the small kitchen table again.

The same place where something had quietly shifted between them a few nights ago.

Adrian placed the envelope on the table.

But didn’t push it toward her yet.

“I could have left this alone,” he said.

Lila leaned back slightly.

“But you didn’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Adrian met her eyes.

“Because I don’t want there to be anything you don’t know.”

Lila felt something tighten—not fear, but awareness.

This wasn’t about being caught.

This was voluntary.

“Okay,” she said quietly. “Show me.”

The Truth

Adrian slid the envelope across the table.

Inside were documents.

Financial statements.

Legal records.

Ownership transfers.

Lila skimmed the first few pages, her brows pulling together slightly.

“What is this?”

“The last remaining holdings connected to my name,” Adrian said.

“I thought you dissolved everything.”

“I did.”

Lila looked up.

“Then what am I looking at?”

“A trust fund.”

She froze.

“For who?”

“For Elliot.”

The room went still.

Not Control

Lila closed the folder slowly.

“No.”

Adrian didn’t react.

“No?” he repeated.

“You don’t get to do that,” she said firmly.

“This isn’t a way back in.”

“It’s not.”

“It looks like one.”

“It isn’t.”

Lila stood up, pacing once across the small kitchen.

“This is exactly how it starts,” she said. “Financial ties. Influence. Obligation—”

“It’s locked,” Adrian said calmly.

She stopped.

“What?”

“The trust can’t be accessed by me.”

She turned back toward him.

“Explain.”

“It’s managed by an independent board,” Adrian continued. “No Blackmoor connections. No control from me.”

“And Elliot?”

“He can’t access it until he’s twenty-five.”

Lila narrowed her eyes.

“Why would you do that?”

Adrian answered without hesitation.

“Because I don’t want money shaping his childhood.”

The Real Reason

Lila studied him carefully.

“You could have hidden this.”

“Yes.”

“I would never have known.”

“That’s true.”

“Then why tell me?”

Adrian didn’t look away.

“Because if I’m part of your life—his life—there can’t be anything behind the scenes.”

The words landed differently than they would have months ago.

Not strategic.

Not manipulative.

Just… clear.

Lila exhaled slowly.

“You’re giving up control.”

“Yes.”

“Completely.”

“Yes.”

She walked back to the table and sat down again.

“That’s not something you used to do.”

“I know.”

The Details

She opened the folder again.

Reading more carefully this time.

The structure was clean.

Transparent.

No hidden clauses.

No loopholes.

Even the language was intentionally simple.

“This is… thorough,” she admitted.

“I wanted it to be.”

“And the board?”

“People with no connection to me or my family.”

Lila flipped another page.

“They can override any attempt you make to interfere.”

“Yes.”

“And you agreed to that?”

“Yes.”

She looked up again.

“Without negotiation?”

“Yes.”

Elliot Enters

At that moment, Elliot wandered into the kitchen holding a piece of cardboard.

“Mom, I can’t find—”

He stopped when he noticed Adrian.

“Oh. Hi.”

“Hi.”

Elliot glanced between them.

“Are you talking about something serious?”

Lila hesitated.

Then nodded.

“A little.”

Elliot stepped closer.

“Is it bad?”

“No,” Adrian said gently. “It’s about your future.”

Elliot frowned slightly.

“My future?”

“Yes.”

Elliot thought about that.

“Do I have to do anything?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

He seemed satisfied with that answer.

“Can you help me with this later?” he asked Adrian, holding up the cardboard.

“Yes.”

Elliot nodded.

“Good.”

Then he walked back to his room.

Just like that.

No tension.

No fear.

Lila watched him go, then looked back at Adrian.

“That’s who all of this is for,” she said.

“I know.”

The Decision

Silence settled again.

But it wasn’t heavy.

It was thoughtful.

Lila closed the folder one final time.

“I need to be clear about something.”

“Okay.”

“If I ever feel like this becomes a way for you to control anything—anything—I walk away.”

Adrian nodded immediately.

“That’s fair.”

“No arguments.”

“No arguments.”

“No negotiation.”

“Understood.”

She held his gaze.

“And Elliot stays with me.”

“Yes.”

Lila exhaled slowly.

“Okay.”

She placed the folder back on the table.

“I believe you.”

What Changes

Adrian didn’t smile.

Didn’t show relief.

But something in his posture shifted slightly.

Not tension releasing.

More like something settling into place.

“Thank you,” he said.

Lila shook her head.

“Don’t thank me yet.”

“Why not?”

“Because trust isn’t permanent.”

“I know.”

“It’s something you keep earning.”

Adrian nodded.

“I will.”

A Different Kind of Honesty

They didn’t talk about the documents again that night.

Instead, Adrian moved to the living room where Elliot was waiting with his project.

The two of them sat on the floor, adjusting pieces of cardboard and discussing how to present the design.

Lila stayed in the kitchen, watching quietly.

The envelope still sat on the table.

Open.

Visible.

No secrets.

For years, Adrian had built his world on hidden layers.

Now he was dismantling them himself.

And that choice mattered more than anything she could have forced from him.

Later That Night

When Adrian left, Lila remained at the table for a long time.

The folder in front of her.

The quiet apartment around her.

She thought about the man Adrian used to be.

The one who controlled everything.

Manipulated outcomes.

Held power tightly.

And then she thought about the man sitting on her living room floor earlier that evening.

Helping Elliot cut cardboard for a school project.

Patient.

Present.

Open.

The difference was undeniable.

A Quiet Acceptance

Lila finally closed the folder and set it aside.

Not hidden.

Not locked away.

Just… acknowledged.

Because this time, Adrian hadn’t been forced into honesty.

He had chosen it.

And that was new.

In the Living Room

Elliot finished adjusting his project and looked up at Adrian.

“Do you think it’s good?”

“I think it’s very good.”

Elliot smiled.

“Good.”

He paused.

Then added,

“I like when you’re here.”

Adrian didn’t respond immediately.

But when he did, his voice was steady.

“I like being here.”

Something Real

From the kitchen doorway, Lila watched them.

No tension.

No fear.

No hidden agendas.

Just something simple.

Something real.

And for the first time, she allowed herself to believe it might actually last.
