Chapter 79 Disturbing The Court
Chapter 79 Disturbing The Court
The heavy double doors of the gymnasium echo as they swing shut, cutting off the draft from the main hallway. The air inside is thick with the familiar, sharp tang of varnish, floor wax, and stale sweat. Somewhere near the far end of the court, a stray basketball thumps rhythmically against the hardwood, a dull, steady heartbeat that matches the irritation pulsing in Jeremy’s temples.
As Jeremy approaches, Scott hooks the ball with his other hand, tucking it under his arm. A slow, knowing grin spreads across his face, his eyes glinting with the easy mischief of someone who knows exactly which buttons to press.
"Look who finally decided to grace us with his presence," Scott says, his voice dripping with amusement. He shifts his weight, tilting his head toward Jeremy with a teasing grin. "Did your library date run short, captain?"
The basketball players lounging around Scott instantly break into low chuckles, a few elbows nudging ribs as they watch Jeremy’s reaction. Tyler, sitting a few steps higher on the bleachers, leans forward with a sharp, calculating smile. He twirls a whistle around his index finger, his posture deliberate and challenging as he eyes Jeremy’s starting point guard status.
Before Scott can shoot back another teasing comment, Tyler steps away from the rail. He takes a slow sip from his shake, his eyes narrowing as he locks onto Jeremy. A sharp, mocking smile tugs at the corner of Tyler’s mouth.
"I just hope it didn't rain in the library, Black," Tyler says, his voice carrying a deliberate, provocative edge. "Wouldn't want the new girl getting damp before she even learns how to speak without stuttering.”
The laughter among the boys dies down instantly, the atmosphere shifting from friendly locker-room ribbing to something heavy and competitive. Scott’s smile fades into a cautious line, his eyes moving between the two point guards.
Jeremy doesn’t break eye contact with Tyler. For a long second, the gym is entirely silent except for the distant squeak of a sneaker across the court. Jeremy’s jaw tightens under the surface, a quick, rigid flex. He lets out a brief, breathy sigh through his nose before stepping close. He doesn't raise his voice, but his presence completely dominates the space between them.
"Focus on your free throws, Perry," Jeremy says softly, the undercurrent of authority cold and absolute. "The substitute bench gets cold if you sit still too long."
Tyler’s chest hitches, his knuckles turning slightly white around his drink, but before he can respond, the loud clatter of the gym’s main entrance doors draws everyone’s attention.
Georgia enters the gymnasium, flanked by her friends. The visual dynamic of the school shifts the moment they cross the threshold. Georgia walks with an impeccable, measured grace, her chin slightly raised, her eyes scanning the room like a general inspecting a front line. Samantha and Brittany are laughing quietly about something, their cheer bags swinging from their elbows, while Victoria keeps pace with Georgia, her expressions quiet, observant, and guarded.
"We need to get changed before Monica catches us," Samantha murmurs to Brittany, checking her watch. "If we’re late for the routine review, she’s going to make us do suicide drills with the boys."
"Don't remind me," Brittany sighs, rolling her eyes as she pulls her long hair up into a high ponytail. "My mom said the clinic is already understaffed this week, so if I go home sore, I'm not getting any sympathy."
With a quick wave toward Georgia, Samantha and Brittany branch off, their sneakers squeaking as they hurry down the corridor leading to the girls' locker room to change into their blue-and-gold cheer uniforms.
Georgia doesn't watch them go. Her focus is entirely locked on the bleachers. She adjusts the strap of her designer bag, her strategic social smile slotting effortlessly into place as she and Victoria walk over to the boys.
"Hi, baby," Georgia says, stepping directly into Jeremy’s personal space. Her voice is sweet, smooth, and perfectly controlled, but her eyes are sharp, measuring his physical cues. She reaches out, her manicured fingers brushing lightly against the sleeve of his shirt. "How was the project brainstorming? I hope the Newbie didn't spend the whole hour stuttering through her sentences."
Jeremy freezes for a beat under her touch, his eyes losing their edge and becoming flat, emotionally detached. He pulls back just enough to break the contact without making it a public scene.
"It was fine," Jeremy responds, his tone entirely guarded. "Just data collection."
Georgia’s eyes narrow slightly at the emotional distance, the muscles in her jaw tightening beneath her flawless makeup. She shifts her gaze toward Tyler, who is watching her with blatant interest, then looks back at Jeremy, her smile growing a fraction tighter.
"Good," Georgia says, her voice dropping into a lower, more deliberate rhythm. "Because the winter formal is coming up fast"
Meanwhile, Melissa Montenegro slips through the heavy, soundproofed doors of the school theatre. The transition from the bright, sterile hallway into the dim, cavernous auditorium feels like stepping into a different world. The stage is bathed in a soft, amber glow from the overhead spotlights, casting long, dramatic shadows across the rows of velvet seats.
As she walks down the carpeted aisle, she spots two familiar figures sitting near the orchestra pit. Spencer is leaning back in his seat, a script resting on his lap, gesturing dramatically with a highlighter as he talks. Sitting next to him is Marcus, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees, listening intently.
The floorboard creaks under Melissa’s sneaker, and Marcus turns his head first. His face brightens instantly, a genuine, warm smile breaking across his features as he stands up.
"H-hey, guys," Melissa mutters, her voice soft, her fingers nervously gripping the oversized sleeves of her sweater.
Spencer turns around, a dramatic sigh escaping his lips as he drops his highlighter onto the script. "Thank goodness you’re here, darling. If I have to listen to Marcus debate stage directions for another five minutes, I'm going to audition for a silent film."
Melissa offers a tentative, fragile smile, her fingers tugging at the frayed hem of her oversized sleeve. "Is Maya around?" She asks, her eyes darting toward the empty stage.
"She’s been back there for about ten minutes," Marcus adds, stepping closer to Melissa, his voice dropping to a supportive murmur. "Do you want me to go call her, or do you want to head back?"
Melissa shakes her head quickly, pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose. "No, it's okay. I can go find her."
"Go on then," Spencer chuckles, waving a hand toward the side wings of the stage. "Save her from the wardrobe racks before she tears a seam out of spite."
Melissa gives them another quick nod, her Vans clicking softly against the floor as she heads toward the short flight of wooden steps leading backstage. As she walks away, she can feel Marcus’s eyes lingering on her back, his quiet admiration a stark contrast to the heavy, manipulative tension she left behind in the library, and the looming shadow of the social execution Georgia is preparing for anyone who dares to disrupt the court.
