Chapter 65 Chapter 65

Misty

I watched Beck walk down the hall to Cricket’s room, cocking my head, unable to stop myself from watching the way his thick thighs and ass moved in his jeans. I shook myself out of the trance as he disappeared into the room. How had we gotten here? Where I allowed a man into my home, into my bed even and trusted him to console my daughter. Moments from the time he arrived came flooding back. Me wacking him with a bat, him having chased off the bears, dealing with Negan. I paused on the fact that even before the most recent events I was willing to put a bullet through the bear’s head I once shared a bed with to defend not just Cricket but also Beck. We had become a unit long before I had realized. So what did that make us now?

I shook my head, turning back to the screen and adjusting my phone to connect the bluetooth.

I had told him we were just being adults enjoying each other's company. I had to mean what I said and not look any further into it. He would get us to safety, that I had no doubts about. We had been through too much together for me to think otherwise of him. However, I realized the idea of him not being there every day, even if he visited for Cricket’s sake often, I’d miss this, I’d miss him. I forced myself to focus on what I had been about to do and put the earbud in my ear listening to the random nonsense on the line. Security running normal check points etc. I began checking on my position within the interface of Alpha Enterprises. The code moved with no triggers as normal. They hadn’t found me. The plan now was to sit quietly and watch the chaos unfold. I was aware of Beck sitting down beside me again but I didn’t respond as I clicked open the camera feed. Beck nudged my now cold breakfast at me. I rolled my eyes because my anxiety had taken over any appetite I had when I woke up.

“Eat or you will force me to make a bigger mess of your kitchen trying to make you something else,” Beck warned.

I couldn’t help the smile, the man was a mess in the kitchen when he made cereal.

“I just don’t have an appetite.” I decided to be honest and pushed it at him. He could eat like, well a bear, it didn’t have to go to waste.

“You're worried?” he asked.

What was the point in lying? We were in this together. I glanced over him and nodded slightly before opening the feed of Creedon’s office. He was on the phone, his posture tense.

That’s when a voice came through the security line. “Boss, we have something!”

I pushed the other earbud over to Beck, and pointed at the screen. Beck took it as Creedon hung up the land line and answered through his cell.

“This better be good,” he hissed.

I glanced over at Beck, apprehension churning in my stomach like a serpent coiling. I was going to be sick.

“A van. It's several blocks away. The doors wide open but it reeks of bears.”

I held my breath as I gripped Beck’s hand. This was it.

“There is a plumbing company’s logo on the side and a pair of coveralls laying on the ground. Whoever was in it left in a hurry,” he informed.

“Mark the location to look for any cameras, I want that vehicle sealed and towed to my personal garage for investigation immediately. Every camera between here and there, I want the footage from the last twenty-four hours!” Creedon ordered.

It was done. Our careful plan was now in full swing. The only thing I needed to worry about right now was how badly me nearly being caught and Beck’s diversion of saving me had cost us. I let myself breathe. We were about to start a war we had no part of if everything went as planned.
