Chapter 199 What Returns To Him

Chapter 199 What Returns To Him
Torren gives us twenty minutes.

Twenty minutes before the pack commanders gather at the gate... twenty minutes before Lord Vane’s vanguard hits the outer boundary... twenty minutes while the heavy doors of the council chamber stay locked.

Rhydan pulls me into the small, shadowed study off the main hall and kicks the door shut behind us.

The room is dim, lit only by a single wall sconce and the pale morning light bleeding through a narrow window. The air smells of old paper, dust, and the wild, uncalibrated heat still rolling off his skin.

He backs me into the space and he does not stop moving until my back hits the edge of a heavy oak desk.

Then he steps in, caging me between his arms, his hands planted flat on the wood on either side of my hips. He drops his forehead against mine, his breath coming in rough, uneven pulls.

"Fifty wolves," Rhydan says. His voice is a low, jagged scrape in the quiet room. "Fifty Alpha-tier wolves from the South, and I am standing here bleeding in a torn shirt."

"But you are still standing," I remind him softly. "That is more than enough."

He lets out a harsh, bitter breath, shaking his head slightly against mine.

"It is not enough, Veyra... not for this." He lifts his head, his grey eyes searching mine, dark and troubled. "When Marguerite put that tether in my spine, I couldn't break it. When Rine locked the courtyard, I couldn't push through it. I watched you walk toward that staff, and I watched you mount a dragon, and all I could do was bleed on the stones and watch."

My chest aches. "Rhydan, you took hits for me. You kept your father alive. You..."

"I wasn't whole," he interrupts, his voice cracking on the words. "And I am still not whole. Vane is a brutal fighter. He brought fifty of his best, and he is coming for you. I cannot stand at that gate and defend you like I should with a hollow space sitting behind my ribs."

And the moment he says it, the fragment of him inside my chest stirs.

It is not a violent pulse. It is a deep, sudden ache... a yearning. The warm gold frequency sitting behind my sternum senses his vulnerability, his frustration, and it pulls toward him like a compass needle desperately trying to find north.

I press my hand flat over my own chest, right over my mother's silver ring, feeling the heavy, restless thrum of his soul-piece beneath my skin.

"It wants to go back," I whisper.

Rhydan’s eyes drop to my hand, his jaw tightening.

"I... I can feel it pulling," he murmurs, his voice thick. "It has been pulling since the courtyard... it knows I feel empty inside."

I look up into his face. The bruising along his temple, the exhaustion lining his eyes, the fierce, unyielding protectiveness that has driven him through the longest night of our lives.

"Then take it," I reply. "You cannot lead this pack with a hollow place inside your chest... you need to be whole again."

Rhydan goes very still. His hands leave the desk, coming up to hover just inches from my waist, hesitant.

"But, Veyra... if I take it back... the bridge closes. We lose the emergency link."

"I know."

"You will not feel my emotions. You will not feel my fears. You will just be you... and I will just be me."

"You will never just be you and me just me again, Rhydan." I reach out, wrapping my hands around his wrists, pulling his palms flat against my chest, right over the humming heat of his own frequency. "I am your Luna. We signed the ledger. Taking this back does not break us apart, it makes us ready."

He stares at me, his grey eyes wide, shining with a raw, desperate hope that makes my heart pound.

"Are you sure?" he whispers, his thumbs brushing against the linen wrapping my ribs.

"I have never been more sure," I tell him. "Take it, Rhydan. Be whole."

He closes his eyes.

I do not use a spell. I do not push. I simply open the space behind my navel and let go.

The reaction is immediate.

The fragment of his frequency rises from my chest like a wave of liquid gold and it pours out of my skin, rushing up my arms and into his body.

Rhydan gasps, his head thrown back, his whole body arching as the missing piece of his soul slams back into his chest.

The impact is explosive.

A deep, double-noted roar... half-wolf, half-dragon... rips from his throat, echoing off the stone walls of the study. The air in the room turns instantly scorching, the glass in the wall sconce shattering from the sheer, concussive force of his restored frequency.

I stumble back against the desk, my hands flying to my chest.

And the sudden absence of his heat leaves me breathless, shivering in the cold morning air... but before the emptiness can settle, something else takes its place.

A thin, unbreakable thread of pure, silver-gold light forms in the space between us. It anchors deep in my chest, right beside my own Resonant core, and stretches straight into his heart.

The mate-thread.

Clean. Permanent. Equal.

It snaps shut into permanence instantly and Rhydan lowers his head, panting heavily.

When he opens his eyes, the grey is completely gone. His irises blaze with a brilliant, molten gold that illuminates the shadowed room. His shoulders broaden, his spine straightening, the bruising on his pale skin already beginning to fade as his dual nature floods his system with overwhelming, uncontainable power.

He is not a bleeding boy anymore...

He is the fully restored Heir of House Valecrest.

He looks at me, his golden eyes burning with a fierce, breathless awe that makes my knees go weak.

"Veyra..." his voice is a deep, vibrating rumble that sends a shiver straight down my spine.

"Are you... whole?" I ask softly.

"I am complete," he breathes.

He steps forward, his large hands framing my face, his thumbs gently wiping away a tear I didn't realize had fallen. He leans down and kisses me... a deep, possessive, intoxicating kiss that tastes like fire, pine, and absolute victory.

The mate-thread hums between us, sending a wave of warm, clean certainty rushing through my blood.

When he finally pulls back, the heavy wooden door of the study rattles under a sharp double-knock.

"Rhydan. Veyra." Torren’s voice carries through the wood, hard and ready for war. "Vane is at the perimeter. We move now."

Rhydan does not take his eyes off mine.

He reaches down, his fingers lacing tightly through mine, his grip firm, immovable, and burning with restored strength.

"Let us go meet Lord Vane," Rhydan says softly, a lethal, quiet promise settling over his face. "And show the South what happens when they cross my borders."
