Chapter 185 The Ring Remembers
Chapter 185 The Ring Remembers
We walk toward her from opposite sides of the ruined floor.
Rhydan on the left and me on the right. The dead staff lies between us like a broken promise.
Sera is still on her hands and knees near the dais steps, ruined palms leaving red prints, watching her grandmother with a face that no longer knows how to be cruel.
Marguerite backs up until her heels hit the first step of the dais.
No staff.
No tethers singing for her.
Just an old woman with a broken nose and blood on her mouth and the entire Binding Circle system still knotted black and ugly behind her ribs.
"Stay back," she warns. Her voice has lost the silk. It is raw now, human and afraid. "You do not know what you are reaching for."
"I know exactly what I am reaching for," I reply.
The piece of Rhydan inside my chest pulses once... warm... and on the other side of the floor, he answers it by taking another step. Gold still burning in his eyes and blood still running down his temple. He should not be standing.
He is standing anyway.
Marguerite lifts both empty hands.
Violet light gutters weakly between her palms... the last dregs... scraped from her own bones because the hall will not feed her anymore.
She throws it at Rhydan.
I feel the hit land in my own shoulder through the link before I see him stagger. But he does not go down. He plants his feet and keeps coming, teeth bared, a low double-noted growl rolling out of his chest that makes the cracked marble hum.
"Do not look at him," I tell her. "Look at me."
She does.
I close the last distance and put my bare hand flat against the center of her chest.
And the second my palm touches her, my mother’s ring reacts instantly.
It is not heat...
It is recognition.
White-gold fire races up my finger and into my hand and into her sternum like a key that has waited fifteen years to turn. My late mother's frequency rises through the silver... clear... fierce... unmistakable... and Marguerite’s whole body locks as if someone has driven a spike through her spine.
Her eyes go wide open.
"No..."
The word is barely air.
"I know that light. I know that hide... the nurse... the little kitchen... the woman who made herself so small I almost missed her..."
"Her name was Elaine," I say quietly. "And she is done hiding from you."
The ring burns brighter.
Elaine’s frequency pours through my palm and into the black knot behind Marguerite’s ribs... and the piece of Rhydan inside me surges forward to meet it... gold and pale light and a mother’s twenty-three-year-old refusal braided into one single note.
Marguerite screams.
Not the elegant scream of a witch on a dais...
It is the raw scream of a woman feeling every stolen thread in her chest get touched by something that remembers their original names.
I push.
The first tether rips free.
It is not violet when it comes out. It is dull and grey and shaking... and as it passes through my hand, the light cleans it. Somewhere far away, I feel a woman I have never met drag in a breath like she has been underwater for many years.
Sera chokes on the floor.
Her ruined hands clutch at her own chest. Her eyes fly wide.
"What... what are you doing... to her...?"
"Taking back what was never hers," I reply through my teeth.
I push again.
A second tether. A third. Each one burns through my arm like ice and fire stacked. My knees want to buckle but the ring keeps me upright. Elaine keeps me upright. Rhydan’s frequency inside my ribs keeps me upright.
Marguerite claws at my wrist with both hands, nails splitting my skin.
"Stop... stop you little parasite... you will unmake everything... you will leave them empty..."
"No," I breathe. "I will leave them themselves."
Rhydan reaches us.
He does not touch Marguerite. He puts his hand over mine where it is pressed to her chest... skin to skin over the ring... and the second his palm covers the silver, the light explodes outward in a silent white shock that knocks dust off the ceiling.
Sera screams and drops flat.
Elder Valecrest falls to his hands on the dais above us, staring down like a man watching judgment day arrive in a girl’s palm.
Corvyn, still broken at the base of the wall, opens the one eye that still works and whispers something that might be a prayer or a thank you.
Marguerite’s head tips back.
More tethers tear free. I feel them... dozens... racing out of her and through me... and each one that leaves makes her look smaller.
Older.
Less like a queen and more like a thief who has finally been caught with her hands in the dark.
"You cannot hold that many," she gasps. "It will kill you. It will burn you out from the inside..."
"Then it burns," I reply.
My nose is bleeding again. My ears are ringing. The well behind my navel is no longer a well... it is an open sky... and Elaine’s frequency and Rhydan’s frequency and my own light are pouring through it in a single rising current.
I see the whole web now.
Not with my eyes...
With everything the ring and the bond and the awakening have made of me.
Hundreds of threads. Generations of Vance women. Ivelina three hundred miles away sitting up in a dark room with a hand to her chest. Sera sobbing on the floor as the last of the Binding Circle’s grip peels out of her spine. Older names I do not know. Younger ones. All of them turning toward the light like flowers that have been kept in a cellar.
Marguerite tries one last working bare-handed... raw black hate shoved at my face.
Rhydan’s other arm comes up and takes it across his forearm. Flesh burns, but he does not move his hand from mine.
He only leans harder into me and growls against the pain.
"Finish it, Vey."
I hear him loud and clear.
And I do not pull gently anymore...
I open everything.
The ring flares so bright the silver itself seems to turn transparent. Elaine’s presence floods the space between my palm and Marguerite’s heart... not a ghost... a will... a mother who sat on a kitchen floor and held her daughter’s hand through a sealing and waited fifteen years for this exact second.
"You do not get to keep them," I hear myself say... and the voice is mine and not only mine. "You do not get to keep her. You do not get to keep anything... anymore."
The central knot of the Binding Circle rips free of Marguerite’s chest in a single violent flood of black-to-white light.
She folds.
Not gracefully...
She collapses on the dais steps with her mouth open and nothing coming out... eyes empty of the ancient hunger... hands limp... the oldest Vance woman reduced to an old woman in a ruined dress who suddenly cannot remember how to hold up her own head.
The light tears through me.
Every cleaned tether. Every freed frequency. Every name.
It all tries to pass through my body at once and I cannot hold the shape of myself against it. My back arches. A sound leaves my throat that does not sound human. The pale light under my skin goes blinding.
Rhydan’s arm locks around my waist from behind before I can fall.
"I have you," he says into my hair. "I have you, my love. Take it. Give it back. I am right here."
I take it all.
I give it all back.
The freed light explodes outward from my chest in a silent ring that passes through every body in the Great Hall. Students gasp as color and breath and power slam back into them. Petra drags in a ragged cry. Cassian laughs once like a man pulled out of a grave. Zael is on his knees near the archway with tears running down his face and both hands pressed to the floor like he is feeling the whole world retune itself.
Sera curls into a ball and sobs like something newly born and terrified of air.
Marguerite topples sideways onto the dais and does not move except for the shallow rise and fall of her chest.
The last of the black web dissolves through my fingers into clean white nothing.
Then the ring on my hand cools from white-hot to warm... to familiar... to Elaine’s quiet steady love settling back into the silver like a woman sitting down after long work.
I sag in Rhydan’s arms.
He holds me up. His face is buried in my neck. His blood is on my shoulder. Mine is on his hands. The piece of him inside my chest and the body of him wrapped around me finally feel like one single unbroken thing.
"Vey," he whispers.
"I need a moment..."
"Is it done?"
I look at Marguerite’s empty face.
I look at Sera shaking on the floor.
I look at the sealed doors that are no longer frosted black... water running down the wood in thin clean lines... as if the hall itself has started breathing again.
"Almost," I whisper.
Because under twenty feet of marble, the dragon hits the seal one last time...
...and this time, the wall cracks.
A single hairline fracture of gold light races across the Great Hall floor from my feet toward the dais... toward the doors... toward every foundation stone in Northveil...
...and somewhere deep below us, something ancient and patient and furious finally tastes air.
