Elaine said she’d live it all over again. That day where we sat in the garden and she was next to me, where she smiled upon discovering the truth - she said she would relive. I would relive your worst nightmare to be by my side again.
That was the first time anyone ever told me that knowing me... was worth it.
When we held hands and entered the palace, I told about Callisto’s decisions, about how he had accepted Asmodeus' suggestion, how he had asked for the palace back and how we would both have to leave.
"Leave?" Elaine stared at me.
"Yes" I sighed "this palace is of Callisto" my words came out with a mixture of irritation and understanding.
It was really natural for us to get out of there, it was natural when the king’s mistress was separating from him, but... it was at that very moment that I realized how ridiculous the system of rules and laws of the kingdom was.
"So... where are we going?" Elaine asked as she leaned on my shoulder.
That was a question I had also asked myself, one that had ripped out most of the neurons, but luckily, Asra had not been a complete retard.
"You’re a duchess" Elaine muttered and I laughed low.
"Only in the title, dear," I spoke kissing her hand gently.
"How?"
I opened my mouth to explain, but it was kind of hard. How could I tell the person I love how ridiculous the relationship between Asra and Calisto was without her feeling uncomfortable?
Ah! Smile, maybe that was the good part of having finally told Elaine about that book.
"Do you remember the original work?" I asked for delicacy, after all it was obvious that she remembered something we had just talked about.
"Um?"
"Asra and Callisto were never common nobles, Callisto ignored his people and duties to keep an eye on Loren and good..." I looked at her and felt Elaine’s hand squeeze my arm, then cleared my throat "well, back... in the end, Calisto and Asra were like a mixture of chaos and combustion."
My mouth trembled as I tried to choose the right words, words that did not sum up that couple and situation to a simple confusion or what they really were: two idiotic beings who used each other, two emotional dependents who didn’t even care about those around them or worse... themselves.
Asra was a complete retard who had dropped everything to become Callisto’s concubine. Were his deeds so ignored that not even in the main work were they cited and his title of duchess? Mere formality. Nothing but pure and simple formality, a formality that I wondered if it had not been suggested by Azrael, ah, of course, there was still that little traitor.
'It’s not my problem,' I thought as I looked over my shoulder at Callisto’s palace.
Elaine and I would go away from him, Elaine would be of great help to Samael to help little Loren and when the time came, I would help him, help him break his curse once and for all so that he had his happy ending next to the father he loved so much. Calisto would not love Elaine, would not sacrifice for her, and would certainly not condemn her son to eternal suffering.
So... it wasn’t my problem whether or not Azrael was such a traitor.
"Asra’s title, as well as her "money"" I murmured "are both from Callisto."
"How?"
I shrugged my shoulders.
"The duchess never had land, possessions or a house" I said looking at the immense garden that Callisto had given to Asra, a garden that she hated so much, a garden that Elaine had loved so much that she risked finding the duchess - so that she could be there "Callisto granted it a title and then presented it with the palace, servants and a generous allowance," I continued, repeating Asmodeus' words in the book "Asra was never really part of this world or this kingdom, but sincerely? The real Asra didn’t care much - if that’s any consolation to you."
Elaine stared at me with a worried expression.
"Then..."
"Yes, dear," I said in a sigh, "We have nowhere to go, no money, no possessions."
I could have eased that situation - I realized when the blue eyes faltered with some fear, but before I could open my mouth again, an uninvited being emerged.
Her arms crossed, her eyes sharp and that annoying smile on her lips. If Samael were not a complete idiot and above all - an angel -, I would surely think that he was a kind of brother of Asmodeus. Twin brother to be exact.
"So, dear ones... what do you think of accepting my help?"
"Help?" Elaine and I asked at the same time, but as my lovely star smiled, I stared at him with one of the eyebrows raised.
"What do you want in return?" I asked him bluntly and he laughed, laughed low as he leaned against the wall.
"Who knows, dear? Am? Maybe I try to kill her while sleeping, maybe I try to pluck her phoenix feathers for potions or..." he purrs and Elaine stares at him with her face taken by a serious and scary expression.
"Stop playing games, Samael," she said seriously in her voice and the fallen snapped his tongue at the roof of his mouth.
"I expected a more adorable personality from the saint everyone was waiting for, from the saint of my dear "daddy"" he grumbled as he looked up to heaven "but it won’t happen, will it? Because you’re all wrong..."
Elaine laughed, a low, lifeless laugh.
"Exactly, so be faster and express yourself correctly, dear."
I stared at her, my brow raised as I watched that woman. Not the scared kid, not Elaine who made those silly mistakes in the original story or even that scared Elaine I knew, no... that was a grown woman, attractive and completely able to slam head on with a maniac who would speak with every word how much he wanted to slice his flesh and use his blood for healing potions.
