Chapter 2 EPISODE 2: The House That Worshipped Her
FIVE HOURS AGO
I woke up with the kind of panic that doesn’t wait for a reason.
My eyes flew open before my mind could catch up, and for a split second, everything was still—too still. No soft vibration from the alarm on my bedside table. No rustle of fabric from the other maids stirring. No sound at all except the quiet, suffocating hum of my own dread.
Then I saw the time.
8:45 AM.
My stomach dropped.
I didn’t scream—I moved. I kicked off the tangled blanket and launched myself out of the cot, my leg catching on the metal edge. I crashed forward, catching myself on raw palms. My knees scraped against the floor. Pain flashed bright and hot, but it barely registered.
I was fifteen minutes late.
Her towels. Her robe. Her lemon tea. The rosewater.
All undone. I was already ruined.
Elara Veyra didn’t tolerate lateness. She didn’t tolerate imperfection. And she sure as hell didn’t tolerate me.
My body was moving too fast for thought—I grabbed the nearest sweater from the rusted hook by my bed and yanked it over my head. My fingers shook as I tried to tie my hair, my braid unraveling before it was even secure. I gave up and let it hang, messy and uneven.
I had no time for shoes.
I didn’t need them, anyway. I’d long ago learned to walk barefoot in this house—quiet as a ghost, invisible as a shadow. I darted out of the servants’ quarters and into the service corridor, every step a jolt of icy stone against my skin, every breath tighter than the last as the crushing weight of failure settled in my chest.
I turned the corner too fast and slammed into the molding. The pain barely slowed me. My mind was already racing ahead, cataloging every task I hadn’t done.
The towels should’ve been steamed to the exact temperature—not warm, but comforting, like a mother’s hand on the forehead she never had. Her tea must be made from leaves flown in from Sri Lanka, organic Ceylon steeped for precisely three and a half minutes. A single slice of lemon—round, not crescented, seeds meticulously removed. Her rosewater had to be sprayed in a single arc across the mirror before she walked in. Her vanity drawers arranged by color, her perfume uncapped and waiting, her silk robe warmed but never wrinkled.
I hadn’t done any of it.
Because I hadn’t woken up in time.
And Elara would know.
She always knew. She didn’t do silence. Elara Veyra was noise—grating, and impossible to ignore. When she was angry, the whole house braced for impact. Her voice could cut glass, and she barked names, flung insults, snapped fingers like gunshots. If her lipstick shade was wrong, if the steam from her towels had cooled by even a breath, if the tea was too bitter or the robe creased, she would explode, violently.
She didn’t argue; she dictated. She didn’t ask; she demanded. Every room she walked into bent to her presence. She had no volume below maximum, no emotion below extreme. Her laughter was shrill and manic, her tantrums operatic. She wore luxury like armor and fury like perfume—thick, pungent, unavoidable.
And she didn’t just expect control. She devoured it.
Everything had to revolve around her—her image, her mood, her rituals. Towels steamed to the exact heat. Tea steeped to the second. Rosewater misted in a perfect arc, not a drop more. Every vase of flowers is arranged symmetrically. Every servant timed like clockwork.
There was no such thing as “almost right” with Elara. Only flawless or fired.
And for those of us beneath her heel, she wasn’t just our employer. She was the sun, burning too hot, too close—and we were all just trying not to catch fire.
I burst into the kitchen like a kicked-open door, breathing ragged, vision tunneling. Everything around me was a blur of movement and heat—boiling pots, shouting voices, metallic clangs—but none of it mattered. None of it could save me.
I was late. I was already dead.
The tray was supposed to be waiting. It wasn’t. My heart lurched. No one looked at me. No one offered help. They knew better. No one crossed into Elara Veyra’s orbit unless they had a death wish.
I lunged toward the tea station. The towels—shit, the towels. I ripped the steamer open, shoved the linens inside so fast I nearly burned my arm. Cranked the dial. Too hot? I didn’t care. Not hot enough? She’d scream. I’d be blamed either way.
The tea leaves. Where were the damn leaves?
There. Top shelf. I reached—fingers slipping—and knocked over two tins before grabbing the right one. Ceylon, organic, imported. She’d know if I used anything else. I tore it open. It exploded sideways.
“Damn it,” I whispered through clenched teeth, scooping the loose leaves with shaking hands, dumping them into the strainer like my life depended on it. Because it did.
The kettle was already screaming. I poured the water, fingers scalding, hissed under my breath. Three and a half minutes. No guessing. No rounding up.
Timer. Timer.
I slammed my palm into the mechanical timer, twisted the dial. My hands were slick with sweat. Everything was too loud—the hiss of steam, the pounding in my chest, the countdown roaring in my ears.
Lemon. One slice. Round. No seeds. I held my breath as I peeled the rind away like a surgeon, praying the knife wouldn’t slip.
Behind me, the towels hissed. I lunged, yanked them out, burned my hands again. The edges were almost too crisp. Almost.
I didn’t stop.
Rosewater. Crystal spray bottle. I grabbed it too hard, almost dropped it. Poured the liquid with trembling fingers. No spills. No bubbles. She’d see even one misplaced drop and throw it in my face.
The robe. Silk. Dove gray. No wrinkles. I folded it with the precision of a soldier handling a flag at a funeral. Smoothed the edges, adjusted the tray, I didn’t stop moving—not even when it was done. I couldn’t. My body had gone too far past panic to slow down now.
The tray sat on the counter in front of me, but I was still reaching, still fixing.
I twisted the teacup a quarter inch clockwise—then back again.
I flattened the edge of the towel, even though it was already perfect. Re-creased the silk robe just to be sure. Checked the underside of the lemon slice for a seed that wasn’t there. Smoothed the tea’s surface with the back of the spoon as if my trembling could somehow ripple it less.
I adjusted the rosewater bottle, so the label faced forward. Moved the flower garnish one centimeter to the left. And then back. And then stared at it like it might explode if I got it wrong.
My hands wouldn’t stop shaking. I wiped them against my sweater—once, twice—then curled them into fists, like maybe if I pressed hard enough, the fear wouldn’t seep through.
I couldn’t breathe right. Every second ticking by was a countdown I’d already lost.
The tray was ready. I looked over the tray again, trying to see it through her eyes. Would she notice the heat in the towel was two degrees too low? Would the tea be bitter now? Had I over-steeped it? Had I touched the porcelain with a dirty thumbprint? Even now, even after everything, I couldn’t stop the spiral. Because Elara Veyra never missed anything—and she never, ever forgave.
I lifted the tray. It rattled against the silver handles, heavier than it should’ve been. My arms ached before I even moved. It wasn’t just tea and towels. It was every fear I’d swallowed to survive.
I stepped out of the kitchen, into the hallway. My feet slapped silently against the cold floor.
The staircase loomed, and I climbed like I was heading to my own execution—too fast, too slow, always wrong. I avoided the third stair; it creaked.
When I turned the final corner and reached her wing, the temperature seemed to drop. At the end of the hallway stood her door, like a monument to everything I feared. White, gold-trimmed. I stopped in front of it, heart pounding in my ears, the tray burning into my arms. The scent of roses had already reached me—too sweet, like poison dressed in perfume. I stared at the doorknob, willing my hand to move, but it stayed frozen at my side. My lips parted without permission, and I began to whisper—not words, not a prayer, just panic shaped like hope.
“ Please let her be in a good mood. Please let the towels be hot enough. Please don’t throw it at me. Please don’t scream. Please, just this once. Please, please, please.”
But I wasn’t praying to God…God didn’t live here…She did.
And if she was in one of her moods—no one, not me, not the tray, not the walls—would walk away untouched.
I closed my eyes, exhaled once through clenched teeth, and my hand hovered over the doorknob, shaking. I didn’t knock. There wasn’t time, and even if there was, she hated knocking. She said it gave people too much power—too much time to prepare. Elara Veyra preferred to be walked in on, admired in her raw, untamed glory. At least, that’s what she told us. So I did what I’d been trained to do. I turned the knob.
The door gave easily under the push of my fingers. I opened it slowly, expecting the usual scent of rosewater and ironed silk. It was there, yes.
The room was dimmer than it should’ve been, the curtains not yet drawn open, the lamps unlit. My heart thudded faster. She hated low light in the mornings. She said it made her look “dull.” She once screamed for thirty minutes because the bulb in her vanity was two watts too soft.
I stepped in carefully, one foot at a time, holding the tray like a shield. The door clicked shut behind me, muffling the world outside, sealing me in.
And then I looked up.
And stopped breathing.
My fingers tightened around the tray, the porcelain rattling against the silver, but I didn’t move. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t even understand what I was seeing at first—not fully.
