Chapter Two Hundred and Fifteen
The Chain Continues
In September of the ninth year she sat in the Boston garden in the early autumn light and she wrote.
Not the formal documentation — that was the archive's domain. Not the personal notes she kept in the evenings. Something she had been thinking about since the Norwegian forest in July and had been composing in the margins of every subsequent day until September arrived and she understood that the composing was complete enough to be written.
She wrote it as a letter. Not to anyone specific — to the chain. To the people who would come after her and after everyone currently in the network and after Eleanor and Ama and Wren and Grace and Kofi and Mei and Fatou and all three hundred and fifty-three of them. To the people the gift would draw to this work in the years when no one currently alive would be here to receive them.
She wrote:
To whoever comes after. I am writing this in September of the ninth year, in the Boston garden, with the apple tree beginning its ninth autumn and the lavender past its ninth summer bloom and the rosebush preparing for its ninth autumn cycle. I am twenty-seven years old. I have been pressing my palms to the soil of this garden for nine years and the soil has been pressing back for nine years and what the nine years have built between us is what I am writing this to tell you about.
The gift is older than you know. It has been in the world since the world was young. In the geological formations of the Saharan sea one hundred and twenty million years ago. In the Southern Alps two million years ago. In the Boston bedrock four hundred and fifty million years ago. In the Norwegian forest eight thousand years ago. In the Fez stone since before there were eyes to see the Fez stone. The gift has been in the world since the world began to form and it will be in the world when everything we have built has dissolved into the geological foundation and become part of the medium space's eight-thousand-year forward motion.
The gift is in the geological foundation of wherever you are standing. Press your palms to the ground and feel it. It has been there since before you were born. It will be there after everything you build has been received by the archive and offered to the completion space and put in motion by the medium space. The gift is there.
The chain will bring you to the right space at the right time. It always has. The chain brought the first convergent to the Fez stone. It brought Eleanor to the Solaris lower courtyard. It brought me to a Boston house with a garden that needed work. It will bring you to wherever you are when you read this. Whatever geological formation the chain has placed you in proximity to, whatever resonant space has been calling to you for as long as you can remember, whatever wall has been calling back when you pressed your palms to it — that is where the gift is waiting for you. Follow the reach. Press your palms to the oldest resonance you can find and follow it.
The work is ordinary. I cannot say this clearly enough. The most extraordinary thing in the world is done in the most ordinary daily practice. Morning sessions. Palms on soil. The same gesture, repeated, for as many years as you have to give it. No single morning is significant in itself. All of them together build the source. All of them together produce the dissolution. All of them together arrive, eventually, at the quality that the medium space puts in forward motion toward the world's own most natural expression.
The anchor is essential. If you carry the gift, find your anchor. Not a good person or a compatible person or a person who understands the gift in any abstract way. The specific person whose frequency is shaped to receive the summer of your spring. The person who will write the notebooks that the gift's autobiography requires. The person who will hold the perimeter steady when you press your palms to stones in underground chambers in ancient cities. The person who will have coffee ready at seven when you come in from the garden. The anchor is how the gift knows what it has produced. Do not try to be both the gift's spring and the gift's summer. The gift needs both.
Eleanor gave forty-one years to this work without reservation. The gift received the forty-one years and gave them to the medium space and the medium space is carrying them forward in the direction the gift has always been moving. Your years — however many you give — will be received the same way. Given to the medium space. Carried forward. Moving in the direction of the world's own most natural expression for as long as the world is moving.
The first convergent was afraid in the Ghana sanctuary. She was alone and exhausted and afraid that the web she was building would not hold across the centuries. The sanctuary restored her and she found the faith to trust the future and she built the rest of the web from that faith. The web held. It has held for seven hundred years. It held for the six hundred and forty-seven marks and for Eleanor's thirty-eight years before the network and for Margaret's thirty-two years of silence. The web holds because the chain does not break. The chain does not break because the gift is in the geological foundation of every place it needs to be and the geological foundation does not break.
Press your palms to the ground. Feel the gift. Follow the reach. Give what you have to give. Trust the future the way the first convergent trusted it.
The chain will carry what you give forward. It always has. It always will.
I am glad of all of it. You will be glad of it too.
Lily
She set down the pen.
The September garden was quiet around her — the apple tree in its ninth autumn, the lavender holding its end-of-season form, the rosebush in its last bloom cycle of the year. The September light was the low warm gold of the year beginning its turn toward the harvest quality, the specific quality of September light in Boston that she had come to know through nine cycles as well as she knew the quality of the kitchen table's wood or the garden's March soil.
She felt the network through the connection. Three hundred and fifty-three frequencies. Each one a morning practice. Each one a specific corner of the world pressing its palms to the oldest resonance it could find and giving the gift's spring in the specific way that specific person's specific gift and life allowed. All of them together building toward what the Fez stone's one-hundred-and-twenty-million-year source had showed her was the direction. The world's own most natural expression. All of them together moving forward in the direction of the medium space's eight-thousand-year forward motion.
She folded the letter. She put it in the archive's reception — not the physical archive, the network's formal channel for offering something to the archive's permanent record. She offered the September letter to the archive. The archive received it with the warm quality of something adding the most recent layer to the record of what the chain had understood.
She thought: the archive now holds the first convergent's records and Eleanor's journal and the seven notebooks and Ethan's eleven completed notebooks and Ama's experiential transfers and Eleanor's forty-year transmission and everything the network had produced in nine years of formal operation. And now this. The September letter to whoever comes after.
She thought: the chain is complete. Not finished — complete. Every link that needed to be added has been added. Every space that needed to be found has been found. Every transmission that needed to happen has happened. The chain is complete in the sense that it has everything it needs to carry forward what it has been built to carry forward.
She thought: and the chain is not finished. It will never be finished. The chain continues for as long as the gift is in the world, which is as long as the geological formations that carry the gift are in the world, which is as long as the world is in the world.
She thought: the chain continues.
She thought: that is the most important thing.
She pressed her palms to the September soil one more time and felt the gift's gladness of the September letter and the archive and the netw
ork and all of it.
Glad. Simply and completely glad.
